re: Checking used games for issues...

There is such a program, but I can't think of the name of it right now. It's on my home computer and I use it to check PS1 games for disc rot. It's actually really fantastic and probably exactly what this guy needs. I think the program might be called CDcheck but don't quote me on that...

For Dorien:
X3F is right. The warranty on a 360 is one year from purchase. For the RROD issue ONLY, the warranty is three years from purchase. As long as you explained the RROD was your issue, they should be taking care of a replacement for free.

As for the box - they only have so many at one time. If you call back and talk to them, you can wait until they have a box available to send you - but it may take a while. My friend just recently ringed his second box and asked about this. MS said they could send the prepaid label immediately, or he could wait approximately 3 weeks for them to send him a coffin. He opted not to wait.

In Europe, or atleast the UK they don't ever offer boxes. The upside is they email you the UPS label within 24hours.

The Brick Grinder has to be completed without dying and it seems like a couple other people are having problems with Ace Astropopper not unlocking, as well.

I called 4MYXBOX on Oct.2, and received my coffin for my 8/06 manufactured 360 today. Shipping tomorrow, hoping for the best. Anyone know what the turnaround is these days?

Mine came fast. Counting time from requesting the box to getting an Xbox back took 8 days. I don't even live in Texas (or close to it) either.

my 360 recently returned to sender for a disc drive failure out of warranty.. that repair cost me 50 bucks to get it fixed after they emailed me a shipping label.. turnaround was just under 2 weeks (13 days including 2 weekends)

my RRoD repair/replacement 2 years ago took about a month; the process seems to have streamlined a bit but its not an overnight affair..

I have only had 1 achievement not unlocking and it was in Rainbow Six Vegas (special operation). Turns out the DLC broke the achievement and no matter what I do those 50 points never became mine. Ubisoft, please test your stuff before making it live.

Isn't it true that if you get the RROD on a 360 with a 3 year warrenty, the replacement Xbox has only a one year warrenty? IDK, i still haven't gotten an RROD yet...not to brag or anything...

I just received a xbox back from Microsoft after mine rrod 2 weeks ago. Very fast turnaround. I asked about the coffin also, they gave me some bullshit explanation as to why they don't send the box to everyone.

Btw, (again!) your 'remember me' checkbox is not working!

anyway, I first got a 1 red light on my 360 I called they said i'd have to pay. Called back told them it was indeed 3 red lights (it wasn't). Long story short, got it back in 2 weeks and I was back to achievement whoring. I mean, back to playing games. :-) Btw, my launch box never RRoDed, it was my 2nd one from Ebay. And the elite I have now hasn't RRoDed yet either(knock on wood).

Ninja Gaiden 2 played me on achievements. Theres about 6-8 achievements that you have to get by playing through the whole game with just one weapon. I played and played and played through that game with that one weapon, and nothing! Even when they switch weapons for you mid-game, I made sure before I used that weapon I switched to the default weapon to get the achievement, and still nothing. Played through that (long) game 4 times before I gave up. Anyway, I was gonna buy the game from gamefly, but I was so mad I sent it back.

The chatpad is awesome, I use it alot. Especially since I hate to be bothered when I'm playing a game where I have to communicate with team mates, I'll just send 'em a quick text. A lot of my friends send instant messages and having the chat pad is much more efficient than going into the dash.

Did you know you can plug in any USB keyboard and the Xbox will recognize it? All of the keys work even the Start key which brings up the Dashboard. I have been using my wireless USB keyboard for some time now and becuase I can type 50 WPM it makes messaging on the Xbox a breeze.

The ChatPad IS awesome.
Whenever my friends come over, they use mine.
It's even motivated them to get their own.
It really comes in handy when you're messaging a friend and don't have your headset around/are too lazy too find it.

Me and 5 friends all won launch 360's from that hex 168 contest. And a few months ago the last one finally fell. So yep, out of the 6 launch 360's I personally knew of, there was a 100% failure rate within 3 years. And I'm pretty sure 4 of them broke within 2 years. All were RROD

As far as the RRoD I'm literally on my 5th 360 since it's launch. Thankfully I haven't had an issue with this one yet, but I assume that when I do I'll be completely out of luck as far as a replacement is concerned.

It's pretty sad when a controller outlives 4 consoles. Really sad. That being said I added the chatpad to mine because I like the extra bit of weight it adds to the controller, it also helps that I can respond to my friends on Messenger when I'm on my xbox... (Even though they should know not to bother me when I'm playing games.)

My 360 recently got the RROD after nearly two years. I applied online for them to send me a box and they sent an e-mail saying one was on the way. About a month later still nothing so I called them up recently and they said instead they'll send me a label instead and that I'll be using my own box.

I've been through the process and the turnaround was about 2 weeks. But it was just around the time that GTA had come out that it happened. So I went to best buy, bought the Arcade sku and returned it 3 weeks later for a full reimbursement. The great thing about getting the repairs is you keep all the peripherals...controllers, HDD, AV cables...so when i returned the arcade to best buy the girl opened the box and all the periphs were still in the packaging...heh heh heh...

"What's the reason for your return?"
"Xbox just isn't for me..."

So if you have $300 you can live w/out for a couple weeks (you'll get it back, don't worry) and you can't go without everybody's favorite console, best buy has a free "rental" program...

I applied for a RROD box about a month ago (a week before hurricane Ike) and got one days later no problems. Packed up my box and sent it back. I just got my replacement from Microsoft Monday and it was not a zombie box as far as I can tell. It is actually a first gen Xenon and the box it was in is marked as such. It was made in May of 2005 so I'm guessing they're sending these out to avoid warrantying RROD for people.

The XBox I got replaced last year had a new sticker with a new manufacturing date of August 2007.

You can't trust the dates on the back of the cases once you have sent a Xbox in for repairs. They take the cases from old Xboxs and put new parts in them. I have a friend who works there in Texas. He told me Microsoft flatout can't make cases fast enough so they have to recycle. That being the case you could possibly have a newer chip.

Well, I do still have the return coffin from my first repair, but I didn't think I'd NEED it. This 360 has lasted longer than my first one, so maybe I never will...

I thought if you didn't get your achievement you just have to sign in your profile, unplug the ethernet cable (effectively disconnect from live), and play the game again. Bleep bloop should magically pop up.
Never need to try it myself. Let me know if it works.

Non-popping achievements. Definately a common issue from my experience.

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway is the most recent game to be doing this to people, including myself.
