GoodEvilPlanet: The best and worst levels we've seen so far
... and by worst we mean "with as little taste as humanly possible" -- but first the best LittleBigPlanet level. A PSN user named Upsilandre, whose brain is at least thrice the size of ours, has created an "electronic" (i.e. not mechanical) 8-bit calculator capable of adding and subtracting any double-digit number. In the video after the break, you see both how to interact with the level and how the whole thing works (spoiler: It's nearly maxes out the complexity meter). It's a shame to think this might disappear once the beta is over.
As for the other video -- and please don't let this take away from your awe at the above calculator -- file this under the "unfortunate but bound to happen" category. A couple levels have popped up on the beta based on the September 11 attacks. Remember, folks, you can report offensive levels in-game for Media Molecule to promptly slam. GoodEvilPlanet officially launches October 21.

Does this mean the embargo is over, then? (If so, tell us EVERY LAST THING ABOUT IT.)
cc123 @ Oct 7th 2008 11:50AM
What embargo?
These levels are in the beta.
Jakka(A tribute to whose who fought and failed during the Epic Flamewar of L.A. Noir and MR.ESC) @ Oct 7th 2008 12:07PM
I think he though MM placed some embargo on LBP news since we haven't had any for about two days - HIGHLY UNUSUAL!
Dave @ Oct 7th 2008 11:41AM
I cannot wait for this game tape.
Dirty @ Oct 7th 2008 11:44AM
Is there a place I can go to see the offensive content or is just banned? I find some of this stuff hilarious. As long as its a new and creative way to express your ignorance Im all for it.
cc123 @ Oct 7th 2008 11:52AM
They make the level inaccessible.
The person that created it gets a little msg that says the content has been moderated and can't be accessed anymore.
Dirty @ Oct 7th 2008 12:05PM
Ok I should have read the whole post. I do not find things about 9/11 hilarious. Not only was that not funny, it was poorly done.
Things that I find hilarious are whole planets in spore being made entirely of penis shaped creatures.
I apologize if I was seemingly defending a 9/11 based LBP level. I was merely stating that certain inappropriate topics may be funny if made into a LBP level.
I am Dirty, and I approve of this message.
kagai @ Oct 7th 2008 11:45AM
That level design is freakin' crazy!
cheeto blue @ Oct 7th 2008 11:49AM
that means this person can actually build a calculator... and that just shows us HOW DEEP LITTLEBIGPLANT can go...
AMAZING!
Grey Acumen @ Oct 7th 2008 1:52PM
My question is if it can handle problems that result in negative numbers.
Temidien @ Oct 7th 2008 6:18PM
Impressive, but can it divide by zero?
Lokno @ Oct 7th 2008 11:50AM
Breathtaking, isn't it? I'm going to have to go home and copy that tonight and pick it apart.
Lokno @ Oct 7th 2008 11:51AM

Whoppy @ Oct 7th 2008 11:56AM
:( They shouldn't remove stuff. Label it, lock it, whatever but deleting stuff because of taste is far too subjective.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 7th 2008 12:41PM
Actually, that sentiment is a little more scary than the implication you're trying to make. Why can't a privately owned corporation censor content submitted to a location it's expected to maintain and be liable for? Yeah, it'll be boring if all the content is "safe", but then they lose customers if they get overzealous.
Unless you want to donate your vast fortune to the Media Molecule defense fund, I'd pipe down. Or, failing that, vote with your wallet if the free world depends on uncensored LBP goatse/911/holocaust themed level.
Vegnagun bwf @ Oct 7th 2008 12:54PM
Good lord. Imagine if FOX found a LBP 911/goatse/holocaust level. My god, think of the ramifications!
Whoppy @ Oct 7th 2008 1:51PM
You seem to have missed the point. Deleting content that infringes copyright/ is illegal is fine, they are liable so they can delete it. I have no qualms when sites like Youtube delete content like that either.
Does the mentioned September 11th level infringe copyright? Is it illegal to laugh about it? No. Sure it's tasteless and crap, but it shouldn't be deleted. Because once you start deleting stuff like that to appease one group, then another group can come along and demand something else is removed.... etc etc
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 7th 2008 2:38PM
"You seem to have missed the point."
No I didn't, though perhaps I didn't make my own point clear enough. It's their server, and their rules. Their powers to censor/moderate are limited only by the tolerance of the audience to support those actions. You don't support them in this manner, but I think you're in the minority.
They do not wish their own brand to be associated with 9/11, a penis, or all manner of other subjects. While not infringement they are within their rights to protect their brand identity. Filtering out tasteless art is subjective, but they are under no obligation to support an agenda.
Yeah, they have other options before deletion, but my own point is that they do not have to exercise that restraint with sensitive subjects. It's their playground, and you have your own sandbox at home if you're inclined to play dirty.
Whoppy @ Oct 7th 2008 3:41PM
I don't want to play this stuff, it's sad that people want to make it, but I think they should be able to if they wish.
The above video is poor, but you can also get really great things out of subjects which may be considered touchy, and by following this route we may miss out on some great stuff.
I would like to ask you a question, would you mind if MM started deleting levels that dealt with something positive to you, which might be offending others though? For example, if someone makes an educational level explaining evolution or the Civil Rights movement, and people start complaing to MM about it, what should they do? The precedent of deleting content that may be deemed offensive is already there.....
But as you say it is their server and EULA and so we play by their rules. I just think that a better route would've been to filter the content instead. So people who want to play and make things like this can, and those who don't will never see it.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 7th 2008 6:03PM
"if MM started deleting levels that dealt with something positive to you..."
Well first I didn't ever think you were a fan of LBP 9/11 levels. But in this point, yeah I would be honked if I put the time into a "positive" level and it was yanked. Yet I can vote with my wallet or voice my opinion as you have done. But...
I know your example was exaggerated, but this is where common sense comes into play. They want to make money and I doubt the developers are fascists in training. They aren't going to yank things unless they expect a backlash against sales or perception.
Look I'm with you on certain points. Censorship can be a bad road, and most of us enjoy games that would not be possible under a blanket of "for your own good" big brother. Yet I also believe that there are limits to self-expression in any public space. And I certainly think MM has the right to censorship to protect its own interests in public spaces. If they start reaching into my home PS3 we'll talk again.
Averna @ Oct 7th 2008 8:16PM
I believe it is deleted from the servers, not the users machine. Although I could be wrong.
I have no issues with that. It would suck if you made an offensive level, but put a kickass item you made in it.... like the calculator having "Hitler rules" or something plastered all over it... then losing the thing entirely.
But seriously, if you make a level that is offensive enough to get removed/moderated, you kinda have to know it has a limited lifespan.
Nick8708 @ Oct 7th 2008 9:27PM
Cyberspace is not exactly public domain. Things that exist within an online world is subject to the approval of the company who is in control of it. That being said, if Media Molecule finds it distasteful or wishes to avoid offending the people who would they have every right to remove it from their servers.
Games like this are meant to be accessible to everyone and are intended to incite certain emotions within a person. Wonder, excitement, happiness, etc. Depression, anger, confusion, etc. are not what they're shooting for. Unless you've never played an online game before, you ought to know that there are players out there who enjoy just ruining the experience for other players. They may be the miniority, but they can affect a lot of people. MM doesn't have to stand for that.
Bob @ Oct 7th 2008 12:02PM
So that's your solution for things you find disagreeable? Tell on them so they can be silenced? Big blowhard hypocritic talk from a site that addresses GTA and censorship.
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrected on a... thursday?!) @ Oct 7th 2008 12:11PM
There's a difference between censorship and moderation.
Trulz @ Oct 7th 2008 2:02PM
There's a big difference between banning the sale of a game and deleting user created content within a game that people might find offensive.
If I want, I can write some snuff furry scat fiction. If I put it in comments on Joystiq, they can (and should!) remove it.
Vcize @ Oct 7th 2008 2:49PM
go on...
Duke @ Oct 7th 2008 12:11PM
Pretty immature to make 9/11 levels like that. I'm kinda surprised that people did it so fast. Guess they are desperate for the attention shock value will get them.
kokuryukai @ Oct 7th 2008 12:15PM
I have no problem with the 911 levels as long as you have a little Bush looking Sac Boy... blowing up the towers...
Knight Marquise @ Oct 7th 2008 12:25PM
You win the vapid comment of the day award.
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrected on a... thursday?!) @ Oct 7th 2008 12:44PM
The very fact that the Loose Change film has been released proves that it's bullshit. What, you think if it was telling the truth the federales would just give up keeping things secret and let it flood the internet?
Lysergio @ Oct 7th 2008 1:00PM
Yeah as long as you make a little tinfoil hat to wear while playing it... IDIOT
kokuryukai @ Oct 7th 2008 3:01PM
I don't want to get into a debate if the US Government was involved in 911 or or not, however I don't believe the subject matter should be off limits in a video games.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 7th 2008 6:20PM
Jesus, and I thought the trolls were bad. Now we've got fucking Truthers?
Time to retreat to What.cd for a few weeks.
tmmoore_nc @ Oct 7th 2008 12:26PM
There's nothing special about the math problem one until you see what's actually running it. It's crazy how something so simple can be so complex.
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 7th 2008 12:44PM
I can't even comprehend how many trigger wires that guy had running all over the place. Either he must be an engineer in real life or otherwise an idiot savant/genius/autistic.
Dirty @ Oct 7th 2008 12:55PM
In real life... Ha.
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 7th 2008 1:04PM
I said 'in real life' cause I figure that's the kind of stuff you seriously need to plan out beforehand. I mean, there must be a good 100 wires there minimum. I don't think I'd be able to keep track of them all.
In contrast, the only level I've come up with so far is a bunch of pits of fire you've got to jump over.
Vidikron @ Oct 7th 2008 1:07PM
According to another website the level is "610 magnetic switches, 500 wires, and 430 pistons."
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 7th 2008 1:24PM
What hath God wraught?
Dirty @ Oct 7th 2008 1:55PM
Just thought it was a silly way to phrase it.
Vidikron @ Oct 7th 2008 12:48PM
This one is also very cool even if it's not a platforming level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1Bz-2TS9NE
And, yes, the calculator level is simply amazing.
Gaucho @ Oct 7th 2008 12:48PM
wow dude. thanks a lot for making my level look like a piece of crap. . . i thought mine was clever but you just slapped me across the face. well done sir.
LuckyEMS @ Oct 7th 2008 1:02PM
i heard that the bird is the word
Shmil @ Oct 7th 2008 1:08PM

LuckyEMS @ Oct 7th 2008 1:09PM
havent you heard that the bird is the word?
Shmil @ Oct 7th 2008 1:06PM
IMO, for his youtube video debut of his calculator, the least he could've done for us is spell 80085
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 7th 2008 1:33PM
God that takes me back to grade school. Classic nerd tricks.
Blazur @ Oct 7th 2008 1:07PM
How I wish they would port this game over to the PC. It looks so incredibly charming, and will likely provide countless hours of entertainment.
CaptNink @ Oct 7th 2008 1:10PM
I'm really "missing the point" with this game - I admit.
So you can create a calculator...and this makes people say 'wow'?
I understand that there is a level of complexity behind that feat, but how is adding numbers together either fun or exciting?
Vidikron @ Oct 7th 2008 1:17PM
*sigh* That calculator level isn't really something that's meant to be "played". It's more like a proof of concept or something to show of the flexibility of the level editor.
Someone has created something this complex already in the beta. Imagine what we may see in terms of levels that are meant to be played when the full game is released to millions.
