... and by worst we mean "with as little taste as humanly possible" -- but first the best LittleBigPlanetlevel. A PSN user named Upsilandre, whose brain is at least thrice the size of ours, has created an "electronic" (i.e. not mechanical) 8-bit calculator capable of adding and subtracting any double-digit number. In the video after the break, you see both how to interact with the level and how the whole thing works (spoiler: It's nearly maxes out the complexity meter). It's a shame to think this might disappear once the beta is over.
As for the other video -- and please don't let this take away from your awe at the above calculator -- file this under the "unfortunate but bound to happen" category. A couple levels have popped up on the beta based on the September 11 attacks. Remember, folks, you can report offensive levels in-game for Media Molecule to promptly slam. GoodEvilPlanet officially launches October 21.
"but how is adding numbers together either fun or exciting?"
It's fun and exciting to the person that made it. He gets his jollies off on making calculators within the game, other people just find it to be a cool achievement.
The point of the creation tools is that you can make whatever you want, be it a platformer, a music level, a story level, or in this case a calculator. So it's whatever you find fun to create.
If you don't like creating anything then you can play the story mode levels in either single player or co-op. You can also play the user created content in the same way.
I understand both of your posts, and they both work to confirm my opinion that this game will be embraced by the "mod and programming" crowd, and largely ignored by others.
Because having a robust creation tool takes away from the other parts of the game, amirite?
Like I already mentioned you don't have to create anything. If you like platformers you can play the levels that come with the game and then play user created content as well.
And people that like platformers. The very good end user created levels will likely come from that crowd, but I'm sure there will be plenty of other people that will simply enjoy playing the levels.
I'm in the beta and played online with other people last night for the first time (played with Tezasaurus from here at Joystiq). It was a lot of fun moving from level to level together trying out levels other people had created. Some levels were crappy or just confusing so we would simply exit out of them after a couple of minutes, but some were a lot of fun. Playing the levels is a mix of teamwork to finish the levels and competition to who can grab the most points and cross the finish line first.
There should be an option in the game set up that allows for accessibility to adult/ "offensive" content. Parents could block access with a password or something if needed. I'm 28 and I can't wait to play every penis, vagina, asshole level there is. After all, it's all about individuality, creativity, art, and the desired user experience. It still bothers me that I can't get any of the amazing penis/ sex monsters in spore.
So to all the people complaining about censorship. I'm not understanding how your differintating them locking an offincive level from other things that are done online. For example microsoft edits mottos and gamer bios if they are reported as being offincesive. Theres a code of conduct for a reason and im sure MM has something to that effect with LBP just because we have the freedom of speech and press and so on doesnt mean that anyone has the right to produce and distribute hateful racist or supremely ignorent and offincive materials on a privately run service or game. And my advice for you is if you dont like it go someplace else
While I agree that I would like access to levels that some people might judge offensive, I understand Media Molecule's and Sony's need to moderate user created content. The game received an E rating for "Comic Mischief." And while there is always that warning that a game's experience can change online, I can't imagine many parents would expect the E rated game they got to have 9/11 simulators and Big Dick's Hairy Hole Emporium as downloable levels. That's just an invitation for trouble.
I don't think having an AO room, channel or tag to keep younger players out would work. To many ways around that crap. It seems like the better way to distribute such levels would be to allow users to export their levels to a computer (via network or a memory stick). Then they could be hosted online and people interested in them could download them, then copy them to their PS3.
Is that a hassle, yes. But it would absolve Sony and Media Molecule from the responsibility of having hosted and distributed such content.
I was lucky enough to get into the beta and have been playing every night. I haven't had this much fun in a long time when it comes to gaming. Running with a few other friends across a bunch of user made levels was hilarious and is done masterfully.
How about the "A boy and his cube"-level? That level is the most satisfying homemade level I've played on the beta trial. It's up there with the storymode levels, only more varied. Very impressive!
