Joystiq hands-on: The finished Gears of War 2 campaign mode

With just one month to go before Gears of War 2 deploys on 360, we were recently challenged to play "as far as we could get" into the now-finished game's campaign mode by Microsoft, Epic Games, and the game's director, Cliff Bleszinski. Like the good Gears we are, we couldn't – nor would we want to – refuse the order.
All told, we got really far in our roughly six hours of play ... but still nowhere near the end. It was far enough that, if we told you all about it, there wouldn't be as many surprises come November 7 (and trust us, there are quite a few). With that in mind, we've decided to recount the high points of the first act, "Tip of the Spear." We've done our very best to steer clear of any major spoilers, but be forewarned: those who haven't completed the first game should tread lightly after the break.
The game begins with gravely voiced COG hero Marcus Fenix and his war pal Dom Santiago teaching a green addition to their squad the basics of combat – in other words, it's a tutorial. Even though we've played plenty of the first game, we wanted to check it out. It's a basic run through an urban environment where you're taught the basics of the game's cover system and other fundamentals. Even though it's more in-your-face than the first game's training / jump right into the action "fork," it still has its own small side-plot that will make it worth playing for seasoned vets.
"Once we started slinging lead at the Locust, we witnessed the much higher degree of destructibility this sequel's environments offer." |
This earliest scenario gave us a good taste of things to come. For one, the environment felt more like an actual lived in (or, in this case, worked in) place. Once we started slinging lead at the Locust, we witnessed the much higher degree of destructibility this sequel's environments offer. Tables could be tipped over for cover, cover could subsequently be blown away bit by bit, and loads of objects shattered and exploded around us when struck by gunfire.
One highlight moment saw a group of Locust swarm a courtyard filled with what turned out to be compressed gas cylinders. Despite the warning stickers, we shot one. It exploded, causing a chain-reaction that blew the rest – and the Locust – to bits.
Throughout this first area, we were noticing message pop-ups in the bottom right-hand corner or the screen. It turned out that these were indications that we'd done something that counted toward eventually unlocking an Achievement. For instance, we were pinged every time we pulled off a perfect active reload, until we finally unlocked "Once More, With Feeling." It was a subtle but fairly ingenious way of saying, "Hey! Keep doing that! Something cool will happen!," that we'd love to see more of.

"We were treated to a truly epic, totally bombastic cinematic showing the deployment of the COG army." |
Next up was the the very first segment of the game ever shown. In it, we climbed aboard massive Grindlift Rigs and set off for a city called Landown, which just so happened to be the perfect spot from which to launch into the subterranean Hollow – home of the Locust.
As seen in earlier gameplay footage, we had to defend the Rigs from incoming mortar fire, Locust attempting to board them, and massive Brumacks charging us. It wasn't easy, but it was big action.
We got another chance to choose our path upon arriving in Landown; did we clear the buildings or take the rooftops? (Rooftops it was.) We commandeered a mobile Locust mortar at one point and used it to blow a hole in a building so the rest of our squad could forge on. Later, we crept slowly through a blacked-out tunnel, blasting explosive, scampering Tickers with only the Grindlift Rig's headlights behind illuminating the scene.
Cue some more cinematics and ... we were in the Inner Hollow. The network of underground tunnels and chambers provided provided not only a change of scenery, but also of pace.
"The network of underground tunnels and chambers provided provided not only a change of scenery, but also of pace." |
Like we said earlier, from the time we spent with it, Gears of War 2 one-ups the original in terms of its story and variety. It's also a more balanced gameplay experience from a difficulty standpoint. The new elements such as human – er, Locust shields, new weapons, and oodles of one-off mechanics (riding a Reaver, anyone?) are just icing on a big COG Tag shaped cake ... one that we want another slice of ASAP.

So are you saying the campaign is really short?
Anyways looks and sounds good. Multiplayer is where it's at anyways.
Mike @ Oct 7th 2008 9:38AM
That's what it sounds like doesn't it?
SuperGayParade @ Oct 7th 2008 9:46AM
Well if it's an improved Gears on the same size disc, wouldn't you think it would be shorter?
Shape @ Oct 7th 2008 9:47AM
The other reviews I have read said it is about 25% longer than the first one.
Well Fed Troll @ Oct 7th 2008 10:02AM
Well hrmm, if played on "easy/ Casual" many games of this genre are short. Im not expecting some Epic 40 hour adventure but...
Also, Randy or whover, did not "beat the game" so, yeah im taking whats being said in the post with a bag of salt.
When i played GoW1 (COop), we continuously said "Oohp! This is the last level!, this games almost over!"...
To our surprise there was another mission to be had.
bak @ Oct 7th 2008 10:37AM
Gamespy preview said they finished it in 12-15 on hardcore. I think that sounds just right.

SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 7th 2008 11:58AM
well if that's true, then 12-15 hours sounds right in the groove for this type of game.
wiredknight @ Oct 7th 2008 12:44PM
Sounds like they're exaggerating. They didn't mention what difficulty they were on (probably easy), and combined with the fact that they were rushing through it, sounds like the campaign will be longer than the first.
I got the impression they only made it through the first three acts.

SuperGayParade = desperate to find complaints
brian @ Oct 7th 2008 9:10AM
can't wait to get this.
karamo17 @ Oct 7th 2008 9:18AM
Well then, i'm fine if it's not that long meaning i have a better chance of finishing the game before my system dies on me.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 7th 2008 9:20AM
Wait you guys were only 6 hours in and you basically saw it all?! Boo-urns!
I thought Cliff said this game would be substantially longer. Clearly I was lied to. Ahh well...I'll probably be too busy playing Fable Deuce/Fallout anyway.
Fosssil @ Oct 7th 2008 10:20AM
They didn't say they finished the game, they said they got "pretty far"; there's probably plenty of game left past what they saw.
Also, completion time is very much dependent on the individual player. I didn't think Halo 3's campaign was short or lacking, yet I can finish the whole thing in about 6 hours. I'm sure Gears 2's campaign will be plenty lengthy on the first playthrough, especially with the difficulty cranked up a bit.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 7th 2008 10:50AM
Well said Fossil! You're right, Halo 3's campaign felt just right; GoW2 will no doubt be just as fulfilling.
romplestomple @ Oct 7th 2008 9:24AM
first part sucked. i doubt this will be any better.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 7th 2008 9:29AM
"All told, we got really far in our roughly six hours of play ... far enough that, if we told you all about it, there wouldn't be any surprises left come November 7."
Wow, umm thanks? o_O Why the fudge would you put this in there? You're basically trying to imply that you almost beat the game in just 6 hours. So I'm guessing EPIC was just full of shit when they said the game would be in the range of 10-14 hours? It doesn't bother me if its really 6 hours as I thought part ones campaign was just right. But still, I get the feeling that you put this in here strictly for flame purposes...
*sigh
GOW Haters in 3...2...1...
The-E @ Oct 7th 2008 9:41AM
Shut up cause loike GEARZ IS TEH GHEY an loike any time is loike too long with tEH GHEY!!!111ONE1ONE!!18!!
AwesomeTown @ Oct 7th 2008 9:46AM
GoW 1 was fun enough to want to play through the campaign again (Though I never finished it a second time only because I got distracted by other games). So length doesn't matter too much too me, as long as I'd want to play it through again.
SexyKittyKat2U @ Oct 7th 2008 9:49AM
Do you really trust Joystiq anymore?
Clearly that was flame bait. It was the one thing that jumped out at me while I was reading.
And for some reason I highly doubt that it's true.
SexyKittyKat2U @ Oct 7th 2008 9:58AM
Looks like RANDY didn't like my comment so I'll post it again.
Do you really trust Joystiq?
Trev @ Oct 7th 2008 10:59AM
I think 2 being as short as 1 would be a serious failure on the part of Epic. I don't know if it was entirely because of time constraints, but 1 lacked a decent arc and a sense of progress. You had to make it to point X and set up the resonator, but since you weren't really given a goal, just the idea of a goal, when you didn't really ever know where that race was ending until you crossed the finish line. Gears was the first game in a long time that I finished in a single sitting, and at the end it was like "that's it?"
I'd also like some effective guns this time. After 14 years, I would expect them to develop a gun so the enemies care that I'm blasting buckets of gore out of their faces.
tl;dr stronger narrative and less bullet sponges plz.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 7th 2008 11:07AM
Am I really seeing xbox fanboys crying about bias now? Joystiq has been very very kind to the 360 over the last year. Maybe the game is really just that short, I mean it is a shooter after all and not Fallout 3 or anything.
You've got it made if all you're worried about is people making fun of the game cause it's short.
Vcize @ Oct 7th 2008 11:08AM
Holy crap, you played through the entire Gears 1 in a single sitting?
More power to ya, I guess. I don't know how you guys play single player campaigns for 20+ hours. Once you get 8-10 hours in even the absolute best shooters start to wear.
Even MGS4, which was entirely story driven, started to wear on me in Act 4 and I was just ready for it to end.
I thought games like Dark Sector, The Darkness, and Army of Two were actually too long, yet the internet says they're all too short.
The-E @ Oct 7th 2008 11:46AM
right note to self....people do not detect sarcasm....
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 7th 2008 11:53AM
The-E
LOL, I think its because you put "shut up" at the beginning, maybe they dont know we are buddies on PSN lol. Anyway, YOU SHUT UP R2 WILL BE TEH GHEYYYY AN GENERIC FTLLLL!!! ARGH!11!1
Man, The Bonus Round pretty much deflated Resistance 2 and PS3 this week.
http://www.gametrailers.com/bonusround.php?ep=27
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 7th 2008 12:05PM
if you guys think Joystiq put that in there as flame bait, then things are certainly changing around here. Joystiq has been pro 360 since the console dropped. theyve lightened up on the PS3 flaming alot lately but i would be surprised if they actually put that in there as flamebait.
maybe its just one of those games that you think you are coming to the end of and then, BAM, you realize your only like halfway through it. that happened to me the first time i play Resistance on co-op. my friend kept saying, "ok its just a couple levels left now", but we ended up playing for almost two solid 8 hour sessions over 2 days before we finished it.
The-E @ Oct 7th 2008 5:03PM
hey fenix, yeah i suppose thats it....well i was just kidding everyone!! and you better be playing TEH GENERIC R2 come November!!i'm looking forward to pwning you!!:P!!
In A World (XBL) @ Oct 7th 2008 5:12PM
I'm glad the campaign isn't TOO long: I wanna get it outta the way, earn my achievements, and move on to multiplayer.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 7th 2008 9:29AM
Yeah I'm getting the same vibe that the Campain is short yet again...sigh...Im really tired of these big money games with small campains....Oh well Im still buying Gears 2

Waaaaah waaaah! Let's all hate on this popular franchise!

k, will do.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 7th 2008 9:31AM
So Randy, how did the game look compared to the first? Does the new lighting system make it much better or slightly?

Oh great, thanks good to know... ;_;
Mr ESC,Lives Again. @ Oct 7th 2008 11:19AM
Waaaaah waaaah! I don't know how to use the reply system.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Oct 7th 2008 9:42AM
I don't care if the campaign is in the range of 7-8 hours long.
Personally I lose interest in games running 50 hours long, and would rather have the story out of the way and start on-line.
Also, consider that the average movie is 2 hours long, and the average novel takes about 3-6 hours to read. If you are looking for an interesting story, any 30 hour plot is filled with a lot of irrelevant side quests and BS (yes that includes your beloved JRPGs).
I say, get the story, then fulfill your bloodlust online.
Well Fed Troll @ Oct 7th 2008 10:06AM
Some how im going to agree with you in some ways.
I dont know if its me juggling games and systems...or my attention span after a full days work (?!)...
For example, i've had GTA4 since its release and still haven't beaten it yet. Im near the end, this i know... but its just not "calling my name" as it used to. Maybe when the DLC comes out i'll perk up again like.
Jaclo @ Oct 7th 2008 9:48AM
Didn't The Orange Box also have a little indicator pop up and tell you how close you were to certain achievements?
I liked Gears of War and all, but I hate how The Orange Box gets no credit for anything. It was a GREAT deal and a great game.
Well Fed Troll @ Oct 7th 2008 10:09AM
Orange Box gets plenty of credit. Just not on blogs/media at present time...
Metacritic, and most Reviewers give OjBox Hi scores all around.
Zeus.:God @ Oct 7th 2008 10:51AM
I don't think Orange Box was the first to have that type of indicator... Even if it was (and I love VALVe, and damn near all their games), it isn't like it's a very original idea... But it is a good one.
Ihavepants @ Oct 7th 2008 10:04AM
Waaaaah waaaah! I hate this popular franchise!
Mr ESC,Lives Again. @ Oct 7th 2008 11:21AM
Waaaaah waaaah! I show some interest for this game even though I'm not sure If I'll play the multiplayer mode but I'll sure play the co-op mode...Waaaaah waaaah! Cry some more!!!
Ihavepants @ Oct 7th 2008 6:54PM
Well yeh, my post is a joke if you read a few comments up. Thanks for needing me to explain that though.

Waaaaah waaaah! I love this popular franchise!
Killjebus @ Oct 7th 2008 11:07AM
I could go the Asshat route and take the flamebait that Joystiq put out there but I won't.
To all of the GoW fans out there, I hope that the game length feels right. I hope that this game pleases it's millions a fans during these trying times and provides a little bit of relief from the chaos around us and brings some fun into your lives.
Videogames now more than ever will be an important release from the harsh realities of the Global meltdown of the economy.
Go go GoW2!!!
