"let a person who doesn't play games try out Fable 2 and to gauge their experience."

Does that scare anyone else?

Scare? No. It makes me a little apprehensive, but there's enough actual scary stuff in the real world right now.

What with Peter's criticism about the lip-synch, the dog going psycho and now this it's starting to sound like the game has been rushed out and he's trying to nip the coming bad press in the bud.

I was hoping for a game that at least hit the high 80's for an average review score. I now starting to think we're going to find a game that's notably inferior to the original.

Scared I don't think is the right word, because as WRE said there's enough scary shit going on in the world (like the idea of a person like Palin being in a position of power) but yes it's something I've been concerned about since Molyneux revealed the "4 big upgrades" to Fable 2....except all of them were casual upgrades and really don't add that much to the game.

If Molyneux didn't want you to review the game until it was "complete", then he wouldn't have released an incomplete version.

To send reviewers a review copy and then say "Please don't review" is absurd.

Seems like these "handling instructions" letters to reviewers always backfire and make the developer look worse. Also seems like it would give the reviewers a negative impression about the game before they ever boot it up. Dumb strategy all around.

What I got out of this was basically: "this game is made for a casual audience but marketed toward the hardcore so please be gentle".

Oh God Peter, "Please don't butcher my game!", this is obviously a sign he's not confident in his own game.

Putting aside the restrictions Konami tried to stick on MGS4, none of the early MGS4 reviews reviewed MGO. A lot of them don't even mention that MGO was included with MGS4. The fact that the review was "incomplete" since the MGO servers weren't up yet didn't stop people from reviewing it. Ironically, despite the laundry list of stuff Konami said was a no-no, they didn't say "don't review this until you try out MGO."

I really don't see why Fable 2 should be any different. Many reviewers went back and revised their MGS4 reviews or did standalone MGO reviews once the Konami servers were online, so may be they'll do the same for Fable 2 once co-op is out.

I see no reason to hold a review on this game. However, it should be noted that one of the touted features was not present at launch. Should that affect the final score? I'm not to sure on that one. I could go both ways. I find it odd that Peter Molyneux begs the reviewer to watch a non-gamer play Fable 2. I do not know if he intended it this way, but that statement says to me that a "hard-core" gamer would not appreciate this game if he or she sat down and played it with his or her gaming history.

Please read this first before you send forward flames.

If anyone watched any interviews including the one on G4 a couple hours ago, he said he wants a 5 year old to be able to play this. Here all he is asking is to show this to casual as well so he can see the market this game would be landing in.

Hes not saying don't show this to the core but he is asking for a varied bag of feedback.

Flamers may beat on me now.

If someone wants to do a review to help a 5 year old decide whether they want the game or not, that's great. But for the rest of us who are older and make our own purchase decisions, we need the regular reviews for older people instead.

This whole comparison between reviewing games and movies isn't quite fair. For one thing, in the letter above, the critics are reviewing a movie before it is released for mainstream distribution. Here, the copy of Fable 2 received by the reviewers is exactly what will be released to the public later this month.

To me, a fairer comparison would be with the theatrical release of Blade Runner and the widely considered superior directors cut. One is good, the other is better. No critic reviewed the original Blade Runner stating "it's good, but when they improve it, it will be better". It got reviewed on it's merits at the time, and re-reviewed in the future. How difficult could it be to write a mini-review on substantial updates? I saw several regarding Burnout's inclusion of motorbikes in it's latest patch.

Personally, i don't think we should give concessions to developers who fail to complete a game by launch. People shouldn't be reviewing a game on what it "should" be as opposed to what it is.

The Director's Cut of Blade Runner can't hold a candle to the original version (you just have to turn the movie off before watching the awful ending).

Frankly, after the past few quotes we've had from Molyeneux, I wouldn't be surprised if what he actually said has been twisted in some way, or if he just never said anything like this at all.

Peter M has always been overly optimistic about what his games will deliver, Fable being a prime example. From what he originally sold as a heroic life simulator in a living, breathing fantasy world Fable ended up as a fairly good, if short and unambitious, western RPG. It seems to me that Fable 2 has been sold on similar lines, and Peter requesting that this be reviewed from the perspective of someone totally unfamiliar with games, any games, seems to be a rather desperate attempt to avoid mediocre 70-80%ish review scores for yet another disapointing Molyneaux game.

And asking reviewers to pass positive judgement on promised DLC is just not on; I don't imagine critics for music and film would amend their scores for potential special editions or directors cuts that may or may not appear, games should be no different.

If high-profile content like multi-player co-op is missing what else didn't make it into the final cut?

It just finally hit me. Peter wants a non-gamer to play the game because they probably haven't been following the hype he's been pushing on the game.

In other words, he oversold the game features once again and he's looking for people who aren't judging the game on what was promised to say that the game is still enjoyable in its own right.

Maybe I am missing something, but I don't see where PM says "Hey, about online play... this is what you will write. No more, no less." The article does, however state that he detailed it, letting the reviewers know what to expect.

In my opinion, which isn't worth nearly as much as it should be on the internet ;), reviewers should review what is there, and not what isn't. Review online co-op later.

One last thing... As a software developer, I can understand where PM is coming from about letting non-gamers play Fable 2. As an interface designer, it is very important to gauge the usability of a particular program without me having to consult with every single end user to explain how to use the program. Since PM can't just go to everyone's house for a Fable II game night, it is important to learn from his mistakes. Maybe his next game is more on the casual side with the same type of interface (dog in place of a map comes to mind). That's just me giving him the benefit of the doubt.

On the other side of the coin, PM should know if his interface has a steep learning curve prior to this point in time! With so much hype surrounding this game, one of the main focuses should have been usability.

This has been a peek into the mind of a software developer

On a relatively unrelated note, I saw "Che" last night at NYFF. All 4.5 glorious hours of it.
Sort of felt like watching the same film twice at times, but a goddamn impressive effort by all involved. Very worthwhile, but not for the casual viewer.
