The new Nintendo Points cards will force you to pick a platform when it's redeemed. Siliconera reports that the House of Mario currency will not go into one main Nintendo piggy bank for the user, but will need to be redeemed for either DSWare or WiiWare titles.
Another way of putting it is that consumers won't be able to transfer points between the Wii and DSi after activating the cards. It's a shame really, we certainly expected a more 21st-century solution (i.e. an all-purpose Nintendo account) from the company which brought us the brilliant 16-digit friend code system.

Buy DS Phat or Lite. Buy a R4 for it.
After that you would have about 99% of what DSi has to offer, but in better packaging, with less restrictions and tons of some minor useful features.
And no "nintendo points" nonsense whatsoever.

Did it ever occur to anyone that a single Wii account may be used by several different people, each with their own DSi? So say I put $20 on my DSi, I don't want my younger brother getting on the Wii and adding his own points or spending mine. It would become too difficult to keep track of them all.
(I mean, is this even that big of a deal? Who doesn't have their credit card number memorized? It takes what, 30 seconds on the Wii to put in your CC#? Three cheers for feigned outrage!!)

That's a good point also. I prefer not to have my CC# saved anywhere ever.

Its times like this I'm glad I really don't follow Nintendo any more that much or handheld systems that much in the long run. This is just plain stupidness, like friend codes weren't bad enough...

As long as it's less of a pain in the ass to enter your CC info on the DSi, I really don't give a rat's ass about separate accounts.

The fact that I can use the same points between the Xbox Marketplace and the Zune Marketplace makes this decision by Nintendo suck by default....

The takeaway should be: Nintendo, please show movement in your online infrastructure. The DSi is your chance to prove your abilities.

Yeah agreed that people are (once again) overreacting to this news. But then again. This is the internet.

So whats the deal if you download games onto your DS and then it breaks? Im guessing nintendo has no solution to this and I would recommend not downloading gaems because your DSi will probably break at some point

At this rate they might want to consider renaming the system to Nintendo DS D'OH.

Yeah that is a damn shame. Especially since it would be nice to be able to have one account for both systems.

I don't understand why they cannot do it like Sony has. They have the Playstation store that the PS3 and soon PSP will be able to access and the PC can access of course. I also love being able to just use money instead of points.
I just wish there was more to download to play between the PSP/PS3 aside from PS1 games, like some PSN titles that also work on the PSP.

Sony does what Nintendon't: firmware upgrades to allow for a unified account across both platforms.

It sucks. There's no denying it. Especially if you had some leftover points on your Wii that you'd like to spend on DSi.
But, Nintendo's online infrastructure just doesn't allow for it.
I mean, you don't have a Nintendo account to login to on DS, Wii, or (likely) DSi. With Wii (and likely DSi), all points are tied to that specific system.
They've really sabotaged themselves from advancements in the current gen with their poor online system. Giving storage to DSi (both internal and SD card) is at least a sign of improvement... but not much.
Now, with the Wii, it isn't too late to redo this. A firmware upgrade could replace Wii Number with a Nintendo Account... probably couldn't do so for Wii games already released, though. Wii games aren't made with patching in mind. They could do some sort of disc exchange program (trading FC versions to Nintendo Account versions)... but that'd be pretty costly and time consuming.
Could even be done with DSi. No chance for DS/DS Lite, though.
But... they're a Japanese company. And Japan doesn't care as much for online games as much as we do.
