Famitsu reports (via IGN) that Sony will release the 80GB PS3 in Japan for the same price as the current 40GB model. For a limited time the company will also include Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III with the system.
Sony will also offer an 80GB PS3 LittleBigPlanet bundle with extra DualShock 3 controller for about $50 more than the standard 80GB version. The company also plans to have a LittleBigPlanet and DualShock 3 bundle for about $80. All the new 80GB models, including the LBP controller bundle, will be offered in black, white and silver color varieties (already available for the 40GB as well). Remember, all this information applies only to Japan, so don't go thinking it's going to be a white 80GB PS3 Christmas.

I'm very curious, why would anyone hold out on purchasing a PS3 just for the PS2 compatibility issue (Besides for the upscaling which is a legitimate argument)?
PS2s are pretty cheap now and you don't have to worry about the software emulation issues. And if you're a dick like me, HDLoader only works on a PS2.

i always listed BC as one of my bullet points. but i now realize that i almost never use the feature on any of my consoles that have it. i have a 60GB PS3 so it does BC but ive only used it just a few times, most recently when i bought FFXII (but i only played that for like 3 hours before i decided i didnt like the fight system much and the graphics hurt my eyes).
the HD upscaling is not really all that noticeable to me. maybe its my TV though cause it seems like anything that is not HD looks like crap on it.

Well I got a real big reason earlier this week. I purchased Marvel vs Capcom 2 for my Ps2 put it in my large PS2 and low and behold it doesn't work.
Turns out that the older PS2 have problems playing PS2 titles. This game and Persona 4 I plan on playing they ever living crap out of in the near future.
It would be a lot easier to have just once device. I admittedly don't play many BC games on my 360 or Wii. That's mainly because there wasn't many titles outside of JetSetRadio:Future or Eternal Darkness.
So yes, I would like some BC in my PS3 which is why I'm hunting for a 60Gigger.

People had the chance to buy a full b/c PS3 and were given fair warning of its discontinuation. If you chose not to act you really have no one to blame but yourself.

just remember though that the PS3 IS region locked for movies. so if you plan on using it for the blu-ray player as well, you should think twice about importing.

Is silver really a new color? Black and white have already been available.
When I hear "available in various colors" I think of a row of iMacs (even though they're crap).
This new trend of "you can have any color you want as long as it's not a color" is crap.

A white LittleBigPlanet bundle to attract the more casual audience would be a brilliant move in North America.

If it doesn't have backwards compatibility and 4 usb ports(and I bet it doesn't), it's basically useless to me.

Unlike a lot of people around here, I've never owned a Playstation or Playstation 2. When I get a PS3 I'd like to be able to play a few of the games that I missed. I don't want to pay for some silly DRM'd versions of them from the Playstation Store.
Not having a memory card reader and having 2 fewer USB ports are also really annoying, and just silly things not to include. Without a doubt, there was better value with the older PS3s.

So why is it that USA doesn't get colored versions? When the PS3 was announced, I was SO down to get a white one but the never even showed up on our shores. Now I've got 2 white DS3s and I'm going to have to pay like $130 and wait 4 weeks to get my ps3 painted legitly
