Joystiq hands-on: Killzone 2
It is nearly impossible to introduce any feature that references Killzone 2 without mentioning its infamous first showing at E3 2005. After an internet fury over its controversial trailer, the shooter from Guerrilla Games was presented at Sony's annual Holiday Preview event this week in Toronto, Canada. Impressions after the break.

We're going to go out on a limb and say that a pre-alpha has no business looking as good as Killzone 2. You've seen images and video before, but to reiterate, Killzone 2 is gorgeous. Looking back, we seem to remember the original Killzone pushing the limits of the PlayStation 2 as well, but then falling short when players picked up the controller.

The section we played begins as you and other soldiers land in the middle of a ruined wasteland to destroy an ammunition stronghold atop a guarded bridge. While the process seems daunting at first, a nearby fallen soldier drops a rocket launcher that immediately provides one of the most satisfying events in the game. Once a chain reaction of explosions completely obliterates the bridge, you and the rest of your team continue through the trenches fighting off the Helghast army.
In two play sessions with Killzone 2 -- equaling around 30 minutes of total game time -- it took some time to get comfortable with the weapon sensitivity. Often the game either felt too floaty or sluggish and we can only pinpoint the issue as lying with the gameplay style. Guns move realistically and Killzone 2 takes this idea and pushes it with added blur effects and an innovative first-person cover system. We're not saying the gunplay doesn't work, but players should recognize the game will immediately feel different when they first get to play it.
Killzone 2's pre-alpha beauty appears to come a price. Checkpoint loading happened very often during the demo and usually resulted in a longer-than-normal gameplay stutter. Destructible environments look amazing but it appears that only specific sections of the game can be destroyed. As a test we fired a rocket at a random wall and were only treated to a dark smear of smoke where we expected to find a gaping hole of destruction. Throughout the day, we also saw that the Killzone 2 demo station crashed at least twice. Of course, this and any other graphical hiccups we experienced are from a pre-alpha build and may not have any bearing on the final product, but it still warrants a mention.

Having been a fan and defender of the original Killzone, Guerrilla Games' latest has been on my personal must-buy list since the first actual gameplay footage was shown. Having played the game, my opinion has not changed. Killzone 2 has gone beyond the silly notion of a required Halo-killer for the PlayStation 3. It isn't Halo. It isn't Call of Duty. Killzone 2 is Killzone and the game looks and plays well enough to be considered something special on its own. No comparisons required.

I am really looking forward to this game
sure... @ Oct 8th 2008 1:52PM
This is the game for PS3 that will trigger my purchase.
It won't be until after Christmas however, as then I can start to save again in my gaming budget. All my disposable income for games that I've been saving for a year or so because my wife and I saw the economy tanking a while back, is going to 360 for foreseeable future. When this game is released I'll have my catalyst to buy.
Once I have my must have game for PS3, I can back track and get some of the others I wanted to play on the cheap. Heavenly Sword, Drakes and Rachet. I'll pick up LBP and I should be good. I'm not going to use the Blue-ray player as I don't feel like buying more movie discs and they're too expensive.
360 marketplace/Netflix FTW!
SuicideNinja @ Oct 8th 2008 4:12PM
I have a hard time looking foward to it. I still have nightmares about the obnoxiously-overused two or three audio clips used by the two or three different enemies in the original. "Scatter!" "Grenade". Bleh. For some reason...I still have that game.
The original Killzone had cool concepts but was horridly executed. Sounds like they'll do better this time, but not without hiccups.
Dirty @ Oct 8th 2008 1:04PM
What has Guerrilla Games done to deserve the hype.
I remain quite skeptical.
Surly Yerby @ Oct 8th 2008 1:10PM
This.
I am impressed with the graphics engine, though. It is something to marvel. Im just not convinced they can make a good game to go with it. I guess we'll see!
Trev @ Oct 8th 2008 1:14PM
They made a good looking, unique game that Xav played and enjoyed. What else do they need to do?
arrrgh @ Oct 8th 2008 1:16PM
truth there. proof will be in the pudding
as for the "controls feel very different" that is EXACTLY what i wanted to hear. KZ1 sucked so much ass it was like a giant ass vacuum enveloping all the nearby ass it could.
Luckily KZ2 looks both MUCH better in the visuals dept, and looks to add a number of very interesting elements to the fps crowd. Can guerrilla pull it off? i sure hope so.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 8th 2008 1:17PM
Dude Killzone: Liberation was fantastic. So....there's that.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 1:19PM
I wasn't aware that hype for a game was completely reliant on past projects, and not from the current game being made.
If that was the case however, then how is Fable 2 getting any hype at all?
Xav de Matos @ Oct 8th 2008 1:21PM
Killzone Liberation was fantastic... and like I said in the article, I liked the original Killzone.
Mr Khan @ Oct 8th 2008 1:23PM
Aye, if hype is going to be based solely on what a dev has done, then The Conduit is going to be an unparalleled disaster of fail.
Red Leader @ Oct 8th 2008 1:40PM
The original Fable still owns, no matter how much you try to say otherwise, it's an excellent game with a lot to do.
Marty @ Oct 8th 2008 1:45PM
If you can't explain the hype for one game without trying to diss the hype for another, you're making a piss poor argument.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 8th 2008 1:59PM
Dirty, I think thats because they have more support now then they did last time around by Sony and all Sony studios, don't forget last time they were an independant company, thats like comparing first party titles to third party titles, the few third parties are great like GTA but lots can suck, Killzone 1 kinda fell into that category especially next to Timsplitters which at the time was simply just more fun overall.
This time I wouldn't expect a bug filled game and such because they have 1 on 1 help from Sony and Sony wants it to be just as good as they do. Sony is willing to make sure that happens. That explains the hype surrounding it, including the fact that it is currently the most anticipated title on PS3 I know of by PS3 fans to play, and others to see if it is worthy of being classed epic after we found out the CGI was not the real version.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 2:02PM
It's one thing to say "why is this game a big deal?" but it's another to ask that question because of past games. What Guerilla has done before has no bearing on this game at all, just like how we can't judge how Fable 2 will be from looking at 1. It's not a fair thing to do at all.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 8th 2008 2:07PM
What annoys me is when people use Liberation as an example, how the hell you gunna use a 'PSP' game to justify how good a 'PS3' game will be?
What is acceptable and superb on PSP isn't the same as the PS3, now a PSP title looking like PS3 game, yeah, that would be the day to raise my glass, but not the other way round :S
Dirty @ Oct 8th 2008 3:06PM
I came back from lunch and my inbox had got hammered from replies.
Based on the heart rating I would say that people are pretty divided on this issue.
Also I disagree with everything you guys said.
Arnon @ Oct 8th 2008 4:49PM
No one even answered his freaking question except with another question rofl.
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 8th 2008 6:51PM
Agreed.
Also, the sluggish gun control comments and the video seems to lead me to believe that the developers decided to go with more realism instead of more fun.
More power to them.
I will rent this game and decide on a purchase after deciding if the multiplayer aspect warrants a purchase.
rodwever1 @ Oct 8th 2008 1:09PM
wow that looks absolutely stunning. Being a pre-alpha version makes me confident that they will have worked out the quirks by launch day.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 8th 2008 1:12PM
Killzone 2 is still in pre-alpha? I thought this was coming out this year...
arrrgh @ Oct 8th 2008 1:17PM
reportedly 09
Xav de Matos @ Oct 8th 2008 1:20PM
Naw. I'll be shocked if Killzone 2 launches before February 2009.
Vidikron @ Oct 8th 2008 1:20PM
No, it launches in February IIRC.
mirage @ Oct 8th 2008 2:02PM
If it is releasing in Feb 09 or soon there after, shouldn't the game be far beyond the "Pre-Alpha" stage? I realize this is a demo so it may not represent where they currently are in development, but I would be prepared for hefty delays for this game beyond what we have already seen.
Chel @ Oct 8th 2008 1:14PM
Oh joy, another first-person shooter. just what the videogame world needs. Ugh.
BravoNavo @ Oct 8th 2008 1:24PM
It's something I personally want. It's one of my favorite genres. Say something constructive or take your elitist crap somewhere else.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 1:23PM
Another whiner about how there's too many FPS games, just what the video game world needs. Ugh.
required @ Oct 8th 2008 1:44PM
please do share with the world what videogame you think it needs
Mr Khan @ Oct 8th 2008 4:06PM
If there is anything the video game world needs, it's Boonga Boonga 2
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrected on a... thursday?!) @ Oct 8th 2008 4:13PM
I love FPSes, and my formula to tackle with the high volume of them is simple.
I only buy the good ones.
Dirty @ Oct 8th 2008 5:21PM
Oh joy, another first-person shooter. just what the videogame world needs....Seriously, I love shooting things and blowing things up... its fun.
jsn @ Oct 8th 2008 1:15PM
yah it's so common to let game sites review a pre-alpha version of a game and then let them post a review of it.... Expect many of those problems to still be there come final release.
Xav de Matos @ Oct 8th 2008 1:20PM
I don't know of anyone in this network who would ever review a pre-alpha release.
Vidikron @ Oct 8th 2008 1:21PM
I wasn't aware this was a review.
Xav de Matos @ Oct 8th 2008 1:23PM
Neither was I... and I wrote the thing.
Red Leader @ Oct 8th 2008 1:43PM
You just got served.
doc j @ Oct 8th 2008 1:16PM
Hmm. 4 months to launch? Hopefully they fix up the problems you mentioned.
This game seems to have ridiculous potential, and I'm excited for it - but I want to get a complete product.
RC @ Oct 8th 2008 1:22PM
Jesus, I know you're a fanboy jsn, but leave it alone. It's a preview of a build. Happens constantly.
jarhead906 @ Oct 8th 2008 6:18PM
The only thing at this point that has me worried is the number of glitches/fuzzy-jaggy lines that will be found in the final build.
Guerilla made many a comment about how the first Killzone was their first game and they weren't trying to make a Halo killer, it was just the result of fanboyism. Hopefully with the full support they've been receiving from Sony and the amount of time they've had to work on the game, there won't be as many problems. I'm buying this day one regardless.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 8th 2008 1:32PM
1st Day Purchase FOR SURE! :D
Duke @ Oct 8th 2008 2:19PM
I agree. This is on my buy list. People dissing it when it hasn't been played by them, while the people who have played it like it, seem to be pretty desperate to hate IMHO.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 9:13AM
Ok Duke seriously here.....I thought KZ1 was bad....Gun sensitivity issues....The worst sniper rifle controls of all time, pre-scripted melee attacks? Pfft....Great graphics though, and ok MP...Hopefully this KZ will fix those issues and deliver a killer app....Cuz really wanna play it badly
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 8th 2008 1:36PM
E3 2005 - Feb 2009 is a loooooooooooong ass time.
It better look damn stunning and flawless. I'm sure they will be squeezing every bit of POWAR the PSTriple has, which is awesome IMO!
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 9:19AM
Its not that long knowing you you'll be playing Gears 2 till Halo Recon anyway so whats 3 months? lolz....we'll all have KZ2 soon enough, and if its bad I will choke Guerrilla with a Helghast shotgun rifle.
Vcize @ Oct 8th 2008 1:38PM
I'm still torn on this. Definitely looking forward to it more than R2, as both KZ2 and R2 are sequels to entirely mediocre games, but KZ1 was on a pervious gen console and it seems like KZ2 will be much less similar to KZ1 than R2 to R1.
However, the description of the controls feeling "floaty" worries me. That's the same thing that bogged down the gunplay in Army of Two and Bourne Conspiracy (though I still had fun with both, so it's not the end all be all).
On the other hand, the first person cover mechanic sounds AWESOME. Having to peak out around a corner to see rather than just going into 3rd person mode and spinning the camera around while your guy stays perfectly hidden will be very cool.
Loading stutters and non-destructible environments don't really bother me.
HighFiveJesus @ Oct 8th 2008 1:45PM
sounds goooood
Chel Chel @ Oct 8th 2008 1:53PM

"Another whiner about how there's too many FPS games, just what the video game world needs. Ugh."
I guess you (and everyone else) enjoy playing the same game over and over again.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 8th 2008 2:03PM
Well, what can you do ey? People demand you like FPS and RPG games this gen, like anything else outside the box like LBP and they don't understand you.
Its like LBP is a foriegner speaking a different language to this gen and thier reply "Speak English or get out!"
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 2:04PM
You should enlighten us as to what games you play then, because I guarantee you I will pick your tastes apart and you'll see just how many games you play that are similar.
