Premium PS3 themes available starting tomorrow
Sony announced today on the PlayStation Blog that "premium themes" for PS3 will be available on the PSN beginning tomorrow. Of course, "premium" means there will be a price to pay, and that would be $1-2.
The premium themes appear to be a little more artistic than the free ones the company has been doling out on a regular basis since the system launched. Sony states approximately 6-10 premium themes should be available a month and explains in the comments of the post that free themes will continue to be offered along with the premium content.

Meh. I'll stick with the user-created variety.
brian @ Oct 8th 2008 7:34PM
indeed, i think most of the stuff made by sony/microsoft is really shitty
crazypenguin @ Oct 8th 2008 8:00PM
there's just one thing that sony-made themes can do that others can't. its that you can add sound effects, and apperently some new things in this "premium theme" stuff. unless i get a real diffrence in the new types of themes though, or maybe, JUST MAYBE, if its a game i'm ridiculously in love with, then i might buy in total through out the systems life....5

^^^
You can add sound effects to custom themes. I don't think they have mentioned anything these themes do that custom ones can't.
brian @ Oct 8th 2008 8:42PM
so being able to add sounds is worth 1-2$?
are you really in the xmb that much to enjoy the cool sounds?
|MaguS| @ Oct 8th 2008 7:33PM
Don't see myself buying them but as long as they continue to offer free ones, I have no problem...
5th hot meal @ Oct 8th 2008 7:35PM
likewise,
I can see myself reaching for that cheese grater again...
darkandlong @ Oct 8th 2008 7:37PM
That BioShock one looks sweet. I may just have to buy that one.
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 8th 2008 7:38PM
Its going to be hard to top their air paint theme.
That guy @ Oct 8th 2008 7:39PM
Paying for themes is stupid. Never will buy a theme on my xbox. Or a gamerpic.
I'm not on my dashboard that much anyway. Well not enough to say "Wow, look at the striking visual design of this theme, I really am glad I spent money on this"
Damn ps3 owner's and their theme creators! ;_;
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 8th 2008 8:58PM
I bought a theme once and it was a rip-off also that the best themes and gamerpics are free.
By the other hand we never get stuff as cool as this in the Xlive.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:40PM
I'll stick with my custom megan fox theme I got from this website. I can't say no to free megan fox :D
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:48PM
by this website I obviously didn't mean joystiq, it was some ps3 site.
j.howlett @ Oct 8th 2008 7:48PM
it is megan fox
archie91s @ Oct 8th 2008 10:26PM
What website did you get the Megan Fox theme from? I would like to know, please.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 11:48PM
I don't agree with you often, but I can agree with you on Megan Fox.
Surly Yerby @ Oct 8th 2008 7:48PM
I fail to see why Sony thinks anyone will buy themes on a system where user-created themes can be made. I imagine within a day or two of any good "premium" theme there will be the exact same thing available on the internet for free.
Neebs @ Oct 8th 2008 7:48PM
*uses free Psychonauts theme*
Kinsey @ Oct 8th 2008 8:15PM
The only way I'd consider paying like a buck for a premium theme is if the background was in motion like the default background.
tmmoore_nc @ Oct 8th 2008 7:50PM
Be prepared for people to upload these to internet sites so you can download them yourselves...for free.
quik_killer @ Oct 8th 2008 7:52PM
not paying
DrunkRaba @ Oct 8th 2008 7:52PM
Since they say they will still be offering the free ones, go for it. And hey, there might be the off chance they make something worth paying for. I haven't seen a theme I would pay for yet on any system, but i'm sure its possible.
DangerMouse @ Oct 8th 2008 7:54PM
How about putting more games on PSN, like, you know, something worth paying for?
el serpiente @ Oct 8th 2008 9:37PM
If you haven't found anything on PSN that you like yet, then you should just sell your PS3, as there never will be anything that will please you. That is, if you even own one.
Matt Dusza @ Oct 9th 2008 3:20AM
So Wipeout HD, Megaman 9, Bionic Commando, The Last Guy, AND Pixel junk Eden all arent worth playing? All of those have come out in the last 6 weeks and of those, only BC and MM9 are multiplatform.
lee @ Oct 8th 2008 7:57PM
who the fuck would pay for themes, when you can get really cool ones for FREE from allps3themes
INSANE!
Double J @ Oct 8th 2008 8:15PM
I'll make sure to jump right on not buying those.
I'm perfectly content with that free "retro" theme they put on the market a little while back.
beeg @ Oct 8th 2008 9:13PM
What is this, the Sony IQ test?
What boggles my mind is that people will embrace this scam with open arms, and the "premium" themes racket will earn Sony a small fortune in revenues -- not bad for a job that is most likely done by some minimum-wage intern somewhere...
For every pet rock out there, there's a sucker just waiting for an opportunity to throw his/her money at it. The stupid, it burns...
arkweld @ Oct 8th 2008 11:37PM
Sony: "Our online experience is going to be far different and much better than the Xbox 360. We don't think you should have to pay to play online and customize your PS3."
Microsoft: "Are you sure? You might be surprised at how much cash we rake in just selling background graphics and crappy little gamer pics. It could help with your massive losses on every console."
Sony: "Really? People will pay for that? Maybe we should see how much we can get away with before we change our minds to start charging for PSN Live ..."
John @ Oct 9th 2008 2:33AM
I think if it's a theme for something they are advertising, like a game or an upcoming TV show, it should be free.
How hard would it be to include themes for a game on that game disk?
I think things like the penny arcade theme is perfectly acceptable to charge for though.
I would like to see some better offerings on the PSN store too though. how about some more PS1 games be put up? I can't see as it is very hard to add them.
John @ Oct 9th 2008 2:36AM
Yes Serpiente, because anyone who is not totally blown away by the meager offers of the PSN store like you are MUST be lying about owning a PS3.
you are such a tool

Get more that 3 posts under your belt then come by and talk shit child
mietha CAG @ Oct 9th 2008 3:50AM
Because, you know, you're not losing pathetically already, go right ahead and give up one of the VERY few advantages you had over MS. Anyone else ever think that's sony's TRYING to fail this gen?
Brian B. @ Oct 9th 2008 11:00AM
Um, there's still free themes dude.
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 9th 2008 4:50AM
Hey, if this is what we have to put up with instead of FUCKING ADVERTS in our XMB, then i'm all for it.
The second i see an ad, i'm off to the Wii world.
