Premium PS3 themes available starting tomorrow

Sony announced today on the PlayStation Blog that "premium themes" for PS3 will be available on the PSN beginning tomorrow. Of course, "premium" means there will be a price to pay, and that would be $1-2.

The premium themes appear to be a little more artistic than the free ones the company has been doling out on a regular basis since the system launched. Sony states approximately 6-10 premium themes should be available a month and explains in the comments of the post that free themes will continue to be offered along with the premium content.

indeed, i think most of the stuff made by sony/microsoft is really shitty

there's just one thing that sony-made themes can do that others can't. its that you can add sound effects, and apperently some new things in this "premium theme" stuff. unless i get a real diffrence in the new types of themes though, or maybe, JUST MAYBE, if its a game i'm ridiculously in love with, then i might buy in total through out the systems life....5

You can add sound effects to custom themes. I don't think they have mentioned anything these themes do that custom ones can't.

so being able to add sounds is worth 1-2$?

are you really in the xmb that much to enjoy the cool sounds?

Don't see myself buying them but as long as they continue to offer free ones, I have no problem...

That BioShock one looks sweet. I may just have to buy that one.

Its going to be hard to top their air paint theme.

Paying for themes is stupid. Never will buy a theme on my xbox. Or a gamerpic.

I'm not on my dashboard that much anyway. Well not enough to say "Wow, look at the striking visual design of this theme, I really am glad I spent money on this"

I bought a theme once and it was a rip-off also that the best themes and gamerpics are free.

By the other hand we never get stuff as cool as this in the Xlive.

I'll stick with my custom megan fox theme I got from this website. I can't say no to free megan fox :D

I don't agree with you often, but I can agree with you on Megan Fox.

I fail to see why Sony thinks anyone will buy themes on a system where user-created themes can be made. I imagine within a day or two of any good "premium" theme there will be the exact same thing available on the internet for free.

The only way I'd consider paying like a buck for a premium theme is if the background was in motion like the default background.

Be prepared for people to upload these to internet sites so you can download them yourselves...for free.

Since they say they will still be offering the free ones, go for it. And hey, there might be the off chance they make something worth paying for. I haven't seen a theme I would pay for yet on any system, but i'm sure its possible.

How about putting more games on PSN, like, you know, something worth paying for?

So Wipeout HD, Megaman 9, Bionic Commando, The Last Guy, AND Pixel junk Eden all arent worth playing? All of those have come out in the last 6 weeks and of those, only BC and MM9 are multiplatform.

who the fuck would pay for themes, when you can get really cool ones for FREE from allps3themes

I'm perfectly content with that free "retro" theme they put on the market a little while back.

What boggles my mind is that people will embrace this scam with open arms, and the "premium" themes racket will earn Sony a small fortune in revenues -- not bad for a job that is most likely done by some minimum-wage intern somewhere...

Sony: "Our online experience is going to be far different and much better than the Xbox 360. We don't think you should have to pay to play online and customize your PS3."

Microsoft: "Are you sure? You might be surprised at how much cash we rake in just selling background graphics and crappy little gamer pics. It could help with your massive losses on every console."

Sony: "Really? People will pay for that? Maybe we should see how much we can get away with before we change our minds to start charging for PSN Live ..."

Because, you know, you're not losing pathetically already, go right ahead and give up one of the VERY few advantages you had over MS. Anyone else ever think that's sony's TRYING to fail this gen?

Hey, if this is what we have to put up with instead of FUCKING ADVERTS in our XMB, then i'm all for it.
