Stop your
speculating, the Tokyo Game Show gives us all sorts of
goodies, like the fact the the Flood is going to be in
Halo Wars, which is coming "sometime" in 2009. Our own Chris Grant, esquire is jaunting off to a meeting about
Halo Wars as we type this very post, and he's going to do some investigating to find out if the Flood is a playable race, or just something thrown in to make life a living hell for everyone. Now, if you got to play as Gravemind, that would be pretty cool.

That's neat and all, but the Flood is the top reason why I can't stand Halo.
But then, I hate fun.
Fox318 @ Oct 9th 2008 12:25AM
In other news the sky is blue.
Twist @ Oct 9th 2008 12:44AM
Canon be damned I guess. The Flood parts were the low parts of all three Halo games so I was really hoping they would be left out of this one.
Alexander @ Oct 9th 2008 12:58AM
umm... starcraft, anyone?
humans - terrans
covenant - Protoss
now flood - zerg..
originality rocks!
DemonGSides @ Oct 9th 2008 1:24AM
I love starcraft more than the next guy, but honestly? Just because they're somewhat alike, doesn't mean they are ripping each other off.
By your line of reasoning, Starcraft ripped off Starship Troopers.
Ihavepants @ Oct 9th 2008 2:38AM
Starcraft was released a few months after Starship Troopers, so no. Even if you're talking about the book, it has nothing in common with Starcraft (or the movie that much really).
comtar @ Oct 9th 2008 3:05AM
People will ridicule you for saying they aren't the same. But I agree with you... I mean lets look at what Halo Wars has.
Humans with military soldier weapons, grunts, tough guy talk, vehicles and mechs.
Aliens with glowy pretty crystal weapons and blades with floating magical like mechs and religious talk.
And an alien species that can take living and dead tissue to expand itself. Devour flesh and create larger beings with more flesh.
Yeah that's nothing like Starcraft.
Just seems to me Microsoft is trying to ride the Halo wagon into eternity, and frankly it's making me sick. This whole advertising campaign of finishing the fight now means nothing. We'll just keep making Halo until the end of time and slave minded buyers will just keep turning out cash for a 3 hour game that ends with no real resolution. It's no surprise Bungie wanted out of their ties with Microsoft, they got sick of it too.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Oct 9th 2008 3:28AM
Ever wonder if those (these?) 'slave minded' buyers are hyped for Halo games because they *gasp* enjoy playing them? It's strange but true.
Robo @ Oct 9th 2008 1:57PM
Actually, Starcraft is an incredible rip off of Warhammer 40k, made by the same company which makes Warhammer Fantasy Battle, which interestingly enough, has a shocking number of similarities with Warcraft. Oh, and if you really wanted to actually complain about The Flood being a rip off, you'd be better off pointing towards the Sci-fi novel Starhammer.
You can't even try to make a statement on the Gameplay in this fashion, since you have absolutely no idea how the Flood Faction will play. More so, you cannot make any claims that it's ripping off Starcraft's "tri-fecta" style since the 3 factions have existed since the very first days of the original Halo. Thus, it makes perfect sense to throw them in the game together. Hell, until yesterday, there was very little indication they would be in the game at all, at least in playable form. You're just trying to claim that this RTS is ripping off Starcraft. (Because only Starcraft can have 3 separate alien races based on highly prevalent story tropes)
Blizzard has been ripping stuff off since day 1. Thankfully they manage to make decent games. I hope this shows you not to play the "who did what first" game, because in the end, you'll usually come out with nothing gained.
Appreciate a title for what it does. Just because a story plot point is a little well tread, or is a very common theme, doesn't make it inherently inferior. If you ever visited TV Tropes, you'd quickly realize just how rehashed every plotline in existence ever is.
Start complaining when shit gets TOO derivative.
Vcize @ Oct 9th 2008 11:30AM
Holy crap, Starship Troopers came out that long ago?
DemonGSides @ Oct 13th 2008 4:19PM
ihavepants; you've never noticed even some resemblance of the zergling and the arachnid warrior?
What about Psyches? Ah, the similarities are endless!
But then again, a lot of things are similar, aren't they? Its not the same game with a different coat of paint, so don't say they are.
JonEthan @ Oct 9th 2008 1:47AM
Why doesn't anybody like fighting the flood? They're less predictable than the Covenant enemies ever are, makes them more interesting to fight because you have less control over the situation. At least, that's how I perceive it..
Draken Stark @ Oct 9th 2008 3:04AM
The only reason I'd have for not liking them is when they have a rocket launcher or a shotgun, otherwise I just melee them to death pretty easily on any difficulty.
Markusdragon @ Oct 9th 2008 3:48AM
Interest gone. Bye bye interest.
Riley @ Oct 9th 2008 3:50AM
... I thought Halo Wars was supposed to be about the ealry days of the war?
the flood weren't discovered until the first Halo game
Snowblind @ Oct 9th 2008 5:39AM
The Flood weren't discovered by the Humans, until Halo. The Covenant already knew, and Halo Wars is about a colony ship trying to take back a planet, not in contact with Earth.
Anyway, this isn't surprising, they've been hinting at this since the begining, it was likely there'd be more than two factions and in the last trailer they all but confirmed it.
I don't see why you'd "lose interest" in this because of that though, it's an RTS. Simply set the Skirmish matches to UNSC vs Covenant? You don't need to use the Flood.
Cole Mullenbach @ Oct 9th 2008 8:41AM
I agree... if you dont want to use the flood, dont play the campaign and set the skirmishes to UNSC Covenent matches.... besides its an RTS and almost all RTS games have at least 3 factions.
Neebs @ Oct 9th 2008 6:39AM
LOL I knew they would have to retcon this to make it good, while at the same time they're killing interest.
Poteeto @ Oct 11th 2008 2:48PM
I rather enjoyed fighting against the flood in all three halo games because it brought so much more creativity to the game. I get bored fighting one type of enemy throughout an entire game. Sure, brutes were not my favorite, in fact they're my least favorite in all of halo series, but still, the flood are badass, and i loved teaming up with someone to fight off a horde of a billion flood charging at me all at once.
