Rumor: Enhanced Rogue Squadron trilogy due on Wii

Could Red Five be standing by for an assault on the Death Star Wii? The latest issue of EGM contains a rumor that LucasArts has licensed out its Rogue Squadron games – the orignal N64 title plus Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike for GCN – to an unnamed publisher that is updating their visuals and control schemes for Wii as we speak.
The rumor also goes that all three games will be released together as a compilation. With Nintendo's recent announcement of the "Play on Wii" series of waggle-infused GCN remakes, added to the fact that the series was a console-exclusive for the company, we have to wonder if the mystery publisher might be the Big N itself.

Hmm... the idea of a graphically-enhanced original Rogue Squadron is intriguing. The idea of having to play with waggle is not.
Also: "updating their visuals" ha! Yeah, right. At most, the original will be remade, II and III will be straight ports.
Jimmyjimjim @ Oct 8th 2008 5:16PM
There's no reason to think it would have to be "waggle-intensive". You could probably use a classic controller or GC controller just like Smash Brothers or Mario Cart.
I'd be happy with them if they just adapted the games to fit a widescreen monitor.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 5:26PM
Give me a break, how can you say with a straight face that there is no reason to think it will be waggle intensive?
Yourself @ Oct 8th 2008 5:32PM
Because he's probably played Brawl, or Galaxy, or Twilight Princess, or RE4, or any other great Wii game that wasn't waggle-intensive?
aristokrat @ Oct 8th 2008 5:35PM
Twilight Princess would have been more waggle intensive (the best battle strategy was to have a seizure, except for that maddening seaworm boss) had it not been for the HOURS of running around Hyrule that you had to do.
KeenCommander @ Oct 8th 2008 6:23PM
@aristokrat: Get back to me AFTER you've actually played the game, which your comment makes it completely obvious you haven't.

"I'd be happy with them if they just adapted the games to fit a widescreen monitor."
YES
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Oct 8th 2008 11:48PM
I really hope you're all aware I never used the phrase "waggle-intensive." I don't care if the game uses nothing but motion controls, as long as they're implemented in a way that makes sense. None of this "ARBITRARILY MOVE YOUR WRIST TO RELOAD!" bullshit.
Jimmyjimjim @ Oct 8th 2008 5:08PM
This would be good news(for me at least)! These are some of my very favorite Star Wars Games. If they reissued "Jedi Outcast" with full Wii motion-plus controls, I'd be a very happy boy.
david @ Oct 8th 2008 5:12PM
Think they will ever make a NEW game for the wii? Remakes are fun and all, but I've already played those games...
Replica23 @ Oct 8th 2008 5:47PM
I was going to say, this is Nintendo's answer for traditional gaming? Remaking games most players likely either already own or played once before. Good job. *thumbs up*
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 5:52PM
Yeah, when will Nintendo get to releasing Wii sequels to games like Pikmin and Metroid instead of just porting them under this new "Play for Wii" bran...
Oh wait
KeenCommander @ Oct 8th 2008 6:24PM
I've never seriously played a game in the series (own the first one, but only played a couple levels). These remakes are a great opportunity for people who never quite got around to these games, especially if priced right.
david @ Oct 8th 2008 7:26PM
I definitely enjoyed the rogue squadron games and wouldn't mind playing them on the wii, especially if the first one is remade, but these remakes seem to be the only games I'm interested in. I bought the wii for Nintendo's great first party games, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Punch Out(An awesome announcement btw)and havn't bought a game for the wii since Mario Galaxy. There are at least 10 games I want this holiday season and not one of them are on the Wii.
/end rant
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 8th 2008 9:39PM
It's already priced right. Go to a gamestore and buy it for like $5-$10. I never thought I'd see the day where people defend remakes of games that are only like 5 years old and are priced 6 times higher than what you can get it for now.
I can understand that feeling for old games like Bionic Commando, but not for relatively new shit.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 8th 2008 5:13PM
I've finally realized Nintendo's ultimate goal: To make everyone purchase the same game at least 3 times.
I bet it started as a drunken dare...
reppy @ Oct 8th 2008 5:41PM
Kind of reminds me of that Jim Gaffigan bit where he thinks bottled water was invented by some guys in France.
"I know, we'll bottle water and sell it to the Americans."
"Uh Pierre, the Americans are stupid but no one is going to buy bottled water."
"We'll just tell them that the water is from France."
Honestly though, re-makes kind of make sense if you look at it from the perspective that not many people owned a Gamecube. The Wii's install base is much bigger. I'm always happy to see Dreamcast games being remade (Shenmue Wii-make plz?) on other consoles, because not many people owned a Dreamcast. Ramp up the graphics, add a few new features, sell it at a discount and heck, it's a pretty reasonable deal.
But hey, that's just my 2 cents.
mogamer @ Oct 8th 2008 5:43PM
Yea, and the third time will be when they release a HD version of the Wii!
Anticrawl @ Oct 8th 2008 5:14PM
This a big iffy rumor as I remember originally reading about it from an anon on some random ass forum a week or so ago.
Seems likely though.
Jeff @ Oct 8th 2008 5:15PM
GOD DAMMIT NINTENDO GIVE ME NEW GAMES NOT REHASHED GAMES I GOT TIRED OF A DECADE AGO RRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
Christ, would it be that hard to make Pikmin 3? And why isn't there a Rogue Squadron 4?
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 5:32PM
"Christ, would it be that hard to make Pikmin 3?"
Were you paying attention a week ago?

BigD145 @ Oct 8th 2008 6:17PM
Since when are sequels not rehashes? Rehashed mechanics. Rehashed characters. Rehashed storylines. Rehashed etc...
Andrew Timson @ Oct 9th 2008 10:41PM
Nintendo is not responsible for Rogue Squadron games...
Actually, they were the publisher for RS1 and (IIRC) SOTE. They distributed but didn't publish Racer, and had no listed involvement with Battle of Naboo.
Joe @ Oct 8th 2008 5:37PM
I'm definitely tired of what Nqintendo is doing, GIVE US NEW GAMES not remakes of old ones!
bug frawg @ Oct 9th 2008 3:38AM
Haven't you been reading this thread? there's nothing stopping nintendo from creating both new games AND remakes.
Snowblind @ Oct 8th 2008 5:23PM
I like the idea of old games being released on Xbox Arcade, PSN, etc, but seriously.. These games were only released last generation, and can still be easily bought and played on the Wii, I really fail to see the point of this.
Does Nintendo really have so little to release that they're trying to cover it up by porting all these old Gamecube games?
samfish @ Oct 8th 2008 5:26PM
Why are you attributing what a third party is likely doing to Nintendo?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 5:28PM
It might have something to do with the fact that Nintendo just announce all their wiimakes...just maybe though...
Yourself @ Oct 8th 2008 5:30PM
It's not that Nintendo has so little to offer - it's that they want to finally make good on their GCN expenditures. There were a lot of great games for GameCube, and most of them were totally ignored. Nintendo and these third parties never saw the returns on these games, so now they're basically looking to give the games (and the investment) a second chance.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 5:34PM
Well then why not rerelease the gamecube games under some sort of "Plays on Wii" label, and give the true fans some sequels?
Yourself @ Oct 8th 2008 5:37PM
Because they'd still be charging 20$-40$, so why not spend the small amount of extra cash in revamping so that you'll get extra sales from people who own the originals? Or maybe because they don't hate gamers as much as you seem to think they do?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 5:42PM
It seriously amazes me that people can look at getting the same game you just played within around 5 years instead of a sequel as a good thing. The controls worked fine on these games, it really isn't going to change the experience much. If you want them so bad go get them used for under $10.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 5:50PM
"It seriously amazes me that people can look at getting the same game you just played within around 5 years instead of a sequel as a good thing."
You know how the industry works, right? People announce new games/sequels at the best possible moment, the moment it'll make the most buzz. Or at least they tend to.
Where were you when Nintendo confirmed Pikmin 3, what, three months ago? Or hows about that Factor 5 project that is more likely than not a sequel to one of these games?
How many of these 'Play for Wii' titles have gotten or are getting true sequels for the Wii or DS? All but one (Mario Tennis).
Pay attention.
j.howlett @ Oct 8th 2008 5:57PM
hey anytime anything goes wrong with a playstation game, no matter who makes it or the nature of the problem, one of the many things i see posted is dammit sony get your act together.

"Where were you when Nintendo confirmed Pikmin 3, what, three months ago? Or hows about that Factor 5 project that is more likely than not a sequel to one of these games?"
I was here to hear "We are working on Pikmin". Sure I guess you could consider it confirmed. We didn't even see a logo for it though, do you really think we'll be seeing the game anytime soon? As for the Factor 5 game doesn't everyone still think that is going to be Kid Icarus?
Pay attention.
Mr Khan @ Oct 8th 2008 6:07PM
Because they are making sequels, but that, you know, takes longer to do
I can't speak of Factor 5 and LucasArts (Factor 5 is all tied up working on some kind of new Wii game anyway, we've known that since the start of the year), but Nintendo's doing Pikmin 1 & 2 and Pikmin 3
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 6:11PM
Also, you want to know how many of these games are getting "true" sequels on the Wii or DS?
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - Nope
Chibi Robo - I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what this is so it's a maybe.
Pikmin 2 - Yes, who knows when though.
Mario Tennis GC - Nope
Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 Dark Echoes - "True" FPS Prime Sequel? We have no idea.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Oct 8th 2008 6:12PM
Pay attention.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 6:13PM
"I was here to hear "We are working on Pikmin". Sure I guess you could consider it confirmed. We didn't even see a logo for it though, do you really think we'll be seeing the game anytime soon?"
Good point. It's been confirmed, so you know (through an interview) that the Pikmin Wiimakes =/= the Pikmin project for Wii.
"As for the Factor 5 game doesn't everyone still think that is going to be Kid Icarus?"
Skeptics do, I guess. I still think it's far more likely to be a sequel to Rogue Squadron.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 8th 2008 6:17PM
Wait, you're saying Metroid Prime 3 wasn't a 'true FPS sequel' to Metroid Prime 1 and 2?
And Mario Tennis did have a sequel... it's not for the Wii or DS though, so I guess you're right.
Mr Khan @ Oct 8th 2008 6:21PM
I can honestly say, placing any and all fanboy shadings aside, if they gave me Mario Power Tennis with the basic swing mechanics of Wii Tennis copied and pasted exactly, then threw in an online mode, they wouldn't need a sequel
Doubt a proper sequel would be much more than that anyway.
Yourself @ Oct 8th 2008 5:28PM
Though I'll not deny there's far too much emphasis on remakes for Wii, people act as though they are supplanting genuine sequels. There's great likelihood we'll never see a Rogue Squadron 4 for Wii - but it's not *because* of a potential rerelease of 1-3, it's because the creators don't want to invest in developing for the Wii, so their publishers will just give the console what they have for cheap.
Likewise, Nintendo themselves are throwing the Play for Wii line out there to try and finally make some money off of great, expensive games that were hurt by a less than successful platform. However, that doesn't mean they're firing all of their development teams or retasking them to Wiimakes - for instance, it's already been confirmed that Pikmin 3 is still in the works completely independently of the remade 1 and 2.
Still, RS1 & 2 (and Battle for Naboo) were incredible games. I made the horrible mistake of selling Rogue Leader when I bought Rebel Strike (which sucked), so this collection would be a highly valued purchase for me, if it happens.
iofthestorm @ Oct 8th 2008 5:29PM
I for one would love to play the Rogue Squadron trilogy on the Wii, especially since I only played the N64 one. Online multiplayer would rock too.

Yeah me too,I didn't have a N64 or a Gamecube back in the day so this is another welcome addition to my library of games.
Foetoid @ Oct 8th 2008 8:11PM
You're such a tool CTC. The Wii is overclocked GC hardware with identical development tools. How much effort do you think is required to remap the controls and change the game to 16:9 480p? FUCK ALL. Nintendo more than likely has a tiny seperate development team working on porting these GC classics to the Wii so as to not affect the development of new games. You're all like 'oh ffs, why cant they give us real sequals'. They ARE giving us real sequals, they are being worked on right now, but at the same time, with a smaller team, GC games are being ported to fill in the gaps between big, new Wii releases. WTF IS SO WRONG WITH THAT. People who never owned a GC can now play revamped versions of older games for the first time without buying a GC controller/mem card, and people like me who own classic GC titles being remade will happily trade-in thier GC version for a Wiimake, just as i did with RE4
PeterF @ Oct 8th 2008 8:25PM
Who is the tool buying the same game multiple times?
iofthestorm @ Oct 8th 2008 10:45PM
I've never played the Gamecube games although I did get a Gamecube near the end of its lifecycle, so for me this would be great. I can imagine that they could make some nice joystick-like controls with the WiiMotion Plus.
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Oct 8th 2008 5:30PM
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the original Rouge Squadron!
Anyways this is good for gamers who missed out on these gaming gems. Seriously they're preety darn good games! ;)
