No kidding. What console manufacturer has ever announced a price cut ahead of time? (leak don't count, of course!)

If price is still an issue, sign up for a sony credit card to get a ps3 for $250.

It's actually $400 with a $150 credit. Price is definitely not an issue for me anymore because of it. Or if you STILL want to wait for the price drop, you can sign up for the card, buy a $300 gift card, get $150 credit, wait for the PS3 to drop to $300, and use the gift card for that. That's a PS3 for $150! Seriously, you cant beat that.

Oh, you can also buy a $300 gift card and sell it on ebay if you want to make a few bux too I guess. Seems more hassle than it's worth though.

morisato- yeah because having a new credit account on our credit report for life until the account is closed and then it shows up as a closed account for 7 years on our credit report is so easy and no hassle..

paying $ 150 more now is usually going to be the better deal for us.

People don't care about COST, what they care about is VALUE.

PS3 is by far and away the best VALUE, it may not be the cheapest at face value, but scratch the surface, and it's the best value by a long mile.

You must have some pretty shitty credit then sk8. The credit card wont affect your score much if you pay it all off and close it right away.

No surprise - we won't see a sharp cut until well into '09, I'd guess. That's when the next Xbox will rear its head over Alask -- er, will begin to appear on the horizon.

Bad move on their part if they wanted to keep catching up to Microsoft, i think.

Certainly a compelling lineup for prospective buyers, but LBP is really the only unique bullet-point (resistance is just a shooter at the end of the day, a very good one, but nothing that's trying to make it stand out from the herd), and with the 360 cost of entry dropping quick, it's not the wisest decision they could make

Otherwise they could've pulled a big marketing coup by taking the scraps of Christmas that Nintendo leaves behind away from Microsoft.

Although I doubt there will be a price cut, if there is to be one, why would they even announce it right now? that's information that would most likely be announced on a show or prior to release of a high profile title...

Why can't Sony cut the damn price? MS has done it repetedly already. Imo there is nothing stopping MS from owning this holiday season now. Zero interesting games for Wii and a too expansive PS3 wich has what, LBP? I predict 360 will crush the competition this Holiday season. Now where is my analyst paycheck?!

Sony has cut the prices on their console multiple times. In fact, it's dropped $200 since release, while the 360 has dropped about the same amount. Sure, it's not at what people would like to see it, but i'm sure they're trying everything they can. But i agree that the 360 will be very successful this holiday season.

Nintendo's still on track to own this holiday season just like they owned the last one, though software sales this time will definitely err in the competition's favor

This holiday season will see a few of the good sleeper titles for Wii hit their stride, though. Madden 09 Wii sales are going to double or triple, compared to the paltry August results, and riding on the coattails of the (admittedly bad) new Star Wars show, Force Unleashed and Clone Wars are going to remain strong

In terms of games releasing this holiday season, yeah, there's only Animal Crossing and Wii Music, neither of which will appeal to the crowd that has another dozen AAA titles vying for attention, but will put Wii sales back into the bracket that makes them inaccessible to the competition.

Its only a gloomy season for hardcore Wii gamers like myself, but i'll have Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Chronicles, and Megaman 9 to (wait for it) console me in my loneliness.

Like, I'm not going to bring up list - not a real believer in that stuff - but in my opinion the Wii's Christmas lineup holds its own against the 360.

Where there is quantity on the 360 side, it's all rather standardised: very sci-fi-sh/shooter heavy. I wouldn't use the word bland, but, not everybody likes that sort of thing.

"Why can't Sony cut the damn price?"

Because they don't need to right now. They have slipped out of second in sales, but they aren't getting crushed by the 360 in any market. I imagine they'd rather remain 3rd place than bleed cash trying to stay in 2nd.

If the Arcade unit starts pulling away in alarming numbers, rather than the muted reaction thus far, you'll see Sony drop the price.

Here is another advantage to launching your system a year in advance. I'm sure if it was a viable option for Sony to lower the price they would have.

Microsoft is working on their 4th chipset already and the costs of producing a 360 are dropping, the PlayStation is still expensive to make, at least blu-ray drives seem to be coming down.

This does have the effect of the playstation appearing to be the most high tech (which it is technically) and gets an unattainable quality that makes it more desirable for people who need to buy the best (regardless of actual quality). Like the rich kid on the block has a playstation, everyone else has a xbox/wii.

Yeah, and right now with the economy being the way it is, it is not enviable to be the expensive tech. I was waiting for a price drop because I wanted a good blu-ray player for Iron Man, Hellboy 2, etc., but now I wouldn't even be spending the money if there was a $100 price cut.

A little bit of a history lesson. Bundles didn't work to help Save the Saturn. It was over priced with a smaller library of games.

From the Sega Saturn Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Saturn

As price drops continued throughout the 32-bit era, the system board design of the Saturn was not as easy to condense in a cost-saving manner and Sega fell behind after price drops offered by Nintendo and Sony. As a marketing strategy, Sega bundled with the system three of its best selling games (Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2) in order to keep the more expensive Saturn competitive with its rivals. This was not entirely successful as gamers preferred to purchase game titles of their own choice instead, so they turned to cheaper competing systems.

I sold my PS3 earlier this year because I have been completely unimpressed with it. LBP looks compelling but I see that game as having a pretty limited audience since the marketing for the game has been total shit so far and really nobody beyond the typical GameStop-dweller knows anything about it, and amongst that group not even everyone wants it. I think its an excellent idea but on the wrong platform to really exploit it.

My main reason for getting rid of my PS3 was...well.... look beyond LBP.... theres nothing else I want. Resistance 2 is the sequel to a game I hated. Killzone 2 is the sequel to a game I hated. I think I will instead spend my time and money on the stellar 360 lineup this year, like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3 (which is multiplat, yes, but I would have gotten it on 360 anyway)

I agree with everything you said here man. My friend has a Ps3 and he bought it for God of war 3. I asked if hes getting littlebigplanet. First off, he didn't even know what it was, then when I showed it to him, he said it looked ridiculous and he'd never buy that. AND he's a sony fan, big time. LBP doesn't appeal to their core audience.

And yeah, 360's lineup is just mind blowing.

This all has to do with the year head start that the Xbox 360 had on the PS3 and Wii. Without gap things would be VERY different as of now.

That seems to be what everyone forgets when complaining about no price drop.

This will give microsoft a real advantage, because average consumers only care about price in the end, they don't analyse which console has the best lineup, or which is most future proof. Big mistake on sony's part.

If you're a PC gamer like myself I would definitely hold off till a price drop.

So far I've found it to be an expensive and unnecessary addition to my living room, considering the games are £15 more expensive and due to my lack of a HDTV I have to squint to play it.

then you are the only one losing out.

PS3 is by far and away the best value on consoles. Sure it's not the cheapest, but that is different from best best value.

I am a game advisor in a large UK retailer, and carefully explain the differences and pluspoints for each console, 8/10 people choose PS3 when given factual information, and the full picture (I think this means Sony are doing a dreadful job of marketing the PS3's features).

Unfortunately on the verge of an economic crisis, I dont know how many parents are going to fork out $399 on a PS3.

The wii and 360 with the "LITTLE" market entry point of $200 will be the "BIG" winners on this "PLANET".

Ok... that was lame.
