If a recently uploaded video (which you can find after the break) is any indication, you'll be taking on the task of "female streaking" in Saint's Row II, which is sure to make all of our lives very annoying for weeks to come, or as soon as the mainstream media sees it. It's not really SFW, even though the lady business has been blurred out, giving the appearance that a giant Barbie doll became sentient and horrifically confused.
But before you hop over the break to bask in utterly non-erotic semi-nudity, we'd ask you to reconsider. You're better than that, right? We're honestly a little embarrassed we brought it up. You wouldn't want your mom, girlfriend or, heck, even your friends who've seen actual boobs before to catch you watching something like that, would you? Why don't you just scroll down to the next post, dignity intact? Or, to put it more simply ... "Don't look, Ethel!"
Pointless? What the hell did you expect from Saints Row 2? SR was about fun and being stupid. Insurance fraud missions? This fits perfectly I'd say. And so what, the media can suck it.
Right. The mass murder makes it fun. The nudity just makes it controversial.
Frankly, the whole thing looks like an exercise in extreme juvenile behavior to me. I used to think it was exciting and dangerous to say "booger" too, but I've moved on. Sure would be nice if the gaming industry did the same. Or, at least, it would be nice if it stopped giving the mainstream media the impression that it hasn't.
Oh get off your high horse. Would you sooner call somebody immature for going to watch Saw V or Die Hard? Probably not, but the overall theme is the same with each of those films; explosions, violence, desecration, and fear.
Saint's Row 2 follows the same vein as GTA is that it gives you an open world to mess around in. Any perverse nudity or murder that a player decides to pursue is in the hands of the player not the game (gang violence, the theme of the game, not withstanding).
If Volition will get off its hobby horse, I'll be happy to jump down and meet them halfway. On the other hand, mainstream America appears to be sitting on the same horse I am.
I didn't see Saw V (wow, that's fun to say), but nothing about Die Hard gave me the impression it was deliberately out to push the naughty envelope for its medium the way Volition is apparently attempting to do with SR2.
This *will* get negative coverage from the mainstream media in a way that Die Hard never did. Sure, we can keep telling ourselves that that's just because mainstream America is out of touch and not nearly so enlightened as we gamers are. And when politician's propose more game legislation in response to mainstream America's (i.e. their constituents) wishes, we can all come together on gaming blogs and tell each other what meddling a-hats they are. 'Cause that's been working so well up to this point.
Or maybe we can just grow up as an industry and start making adult games where "adult" isn't assumed to mean exposing naughty digital bits, saying naughty words, or doing naughty things. Real adults understand that only juveniles find pleasure in pushing the naughty envelope, and this is precisely why so very many of those adults will see games like Saints Row 2 and assume that video games are made by and for juveniles.
Real adults also understand that while juvenile humor may be immature, there is a time and a place for it, even if they themselves aren't so fond of it. They also realize that the existence of more mature material doesn't in any way require an absence of immature material. There's nothing wrong with Volition creating the sort of game they want to create. If society deems it inappropriate (and I mean society, not mass media/infotainment) then the game won't sell. Otherwise, there's obviously a place for it.
AoE said: "Real adults also understand that while juvenile humor may be immature, there is a time and a place for it..."
Of course there's a time and place for immaturity: It's called, "Kindergarten." :P
"They also realize that the existence of more mature material doesn't in any way require an absence of immature material. There's nothing wrong with Volition creating the sort of game they want to create."
Sure, the existence of pulp doesn't preclude the writing of real literature. I'm just trying to point out that when your industry is being consistently tarred with the "pulp" brush and you think it can legitimately put out real literature, another piece of pulp coming down the pipe isn't necessarily desirable. Even more, standing up and saying, "This is pulp and we can do better!" shouldn't be seen as a Bad Thing.
I think it's perfect, fits into the whole Saints Row vibe. The added "running" animation manages to take what would be censorship fodder and turns it into what it was supposed to be: Humorous Streaking (think the movie "Old School").
Relax, I'm pretty sure this is just the exaggerated "I'm streeeaaaaking!" animation. It looks pretty hilarious. I don't think you'll be running like that from cops in the real game. Its not bad, they did it on purpose.
I know! I cracked up so bad when she started to run! what made it even funnier was that someone who looks like that running was able to take out like five people, including a cop in body armor, and killing at least one.
