Halo 3: Recon will be a standalone, includes new multiplayer maps
Though clearly visible in the corner of the Halo 3: Recon announcement yesterday, Microsoft has made sure to clarify that the "Hell Jumpers" campaign will be released as a standalone product next year (no confirmation of a downloadable version just yet). Halo 3: Recon will not require the Halo 3 game disc and, in fact, seems to include all of the multiplayer components of the original Halo 3, in addition to new maps and Forge options. Recon will also support Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and 4-player co-op. The game is scheduled for release in fall 2009.
Update: Bungie's Luke Smith clarifies that Recon is a "Bungie-made Halo game." In other words, no, it will not be third-person or feature gameplay uncharacteristic of past entries in the series.

YES, I knew it. Expansion my ass! Things are looking very nice for the 360 camp. But is it 3rd person?
Love that cover art btw...
Jakka @ Oct 9th 2008 3:32PM
Doubt it will be...Bungie would probably stick to what they're best at.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 9th 2008 3:33PM
Based on the word Recon...and the GRAW team going to Bungie I would assume that it being called Halo 3 RECON is no coincidence...Im going with yes...its a third person shooter.....ODST killing Brutes? YES!! I'm all about that!
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Oct 9th 2008 3:36PM
If its third person I'll be a very happy panda.
First person would be fine too though.
Mike-453 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:39PM
Then again, there's no reason it can't include both perspectives. GRAW did. Or even a combination like R6Vegas with a third-person cover system.
We're gonna need what's around that corner now we have no shielding.
Dirty @ Oct 9th 2008 3:45PM
I would be ready to wait, I bet we don't see this in action until E3. Maybe they will let us know, but wont show us.
BananaBoat @ Oct 9th 2008 3:57PM
People with Recon will be able to compete with people that only have Halo 3 apparently. In other words, no, there will not be third person mode (since it would be unfair to people without recon).
I really hope that Bungie doesn't think we're going to pay 60 bucks for this. Depending on the length of the single player campaign, I might drop...30..on it..but 60 is out of the question and 50 or 40 are pushing it. Yes, I know that's kinda cheap, but even if you put lipstick on an expansion pack, it's still just a pig. I mean, an expansion pack.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 9th 2008 4:00PM
Please Bungie DONT make this game part of Halo 3....Seriously...Make it like GRAW but with Brutes.....PLEZE PLEZE....I'll buy this game for 60 if its an all new playing experience....PLEZE
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 9th 2008 4:12PM
What ExMcloud said! Do it, do it!!
Erluti @ Oct 9th 2008 4:18PM
Ick! No!
GRAW is the only game I've ever sold back to the Gamestopo.
The-E @ Oct 9th 2008 4:23PM
Damn fenix.....there is just so much of TEH GHEY....i just can't keep up....:P
Pedobear @ Oct 9th 2008 4:25PM
Why would people want it to be like GRAW? That game was terribly boring.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 9th 2008 4:30PM
Damn people don't like GRAW....I thought GRAW was great
Mike-453 @ Oct 9th 2008 4:39PM
*shocked face*
GRAW is awesome though! Slower than most shooters, but that's the point.
Someone mentioned no thir-dperson because it would be unfair in multiplayer. That's what I hate, content in campaign seems to be limited by what can be put in multiplayer, hopefully this is changed with Halo 3: Recon.
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 9th 2008 9:02PM
@ExMcCloud
Graw was great, its completely different from Halo though. I guess some people don't like to mix chocolate and peanut butter
Envoy @ Oct 9th 2008 3:32PM
Saving my moniez for Halo Tennis.
Dave @ Oct 9th 2008 5:10PM
No love for Halo Party 1 through to 8?

Man everything about this looks awesome. The cover art, the trailer, the ODST. I still wonder though if it will be just like playing as Master Chief only with different hands to look at, or if it will really be like the Ghost Recon games we all think it will. Either way this looks great and I'm really excited
Jawmuncher @ Oct 9th 2008 3:57PM
Your mom's a classy Lady!
(Remember that?)
Anyways I love the box art
theturtle363 @ Oct 9th 2008 6:21PM
my mother is quite a wonderful woman
TWiNKiE @ Oct 9th 2008 8:55PM
My mom is better than your mom!!!!!!!!!!!1
McWeen @ Oct 9th 2008 3:34PM
But will it be longer than Halo 3's 5 hour campaign?
Noah @ Oct 9th 2008 3:36PM
Har Har, you so funny.
McWeen @ Oct 9th 2008 3:39PM
I was not trying to make a joke. I liked Halo 3 but it was really really short. I would like this to be longer.
Metal Geario 360 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:42PM
Stop playing games on "easy" then...
:P
Mike-453 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:45PM
Should games need to be artificially lengthened by ultra-difficult enemies just to make up for a shortcoming in levels?
Not that it matters to me, i've played Halo 3's campaign over and over, it has the variety and 'sandbox' fun that most don't have.
thebigl @ Oct 9th 2008 3:56PM
He's right, the whole game I was expecting more stuff to happen and it never did. When I finished the game I felt like something was missing.
Though this is probably due to the whole "Believe" ad campaign that made it look as if chief was gonna have an epic battle on earths battered landscape.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 9th 2008 4:03PM
HD games are around 8 hours campaign nowadays...
look at uncharted and cod4..
the fun of halo is in the online play, which i have easily played 50-100 hours myself.
Anticrawl @ Oct 9th 2008 5:20PM
Ultra-difficult...........
Which game were you playing? Halo 3 on legendary even with the mythic skull, fog and the one that made grunts go suicide grenade with bigger explosions didn't make the campaign that difficult. Was a pretty casual experience beginning to end.
Anticrawl @ Oct 9th 2008 5:22PM
Then again I got every achievement for the game within the first week of the launch and put it back in the case. Haven't played it since because of all the annoying things with multiplayer. Guess everyone is different.
Dirty @ Oct 9th 2008 3:35PM
They should have been smart and not labeled it as an expansion... ever, it just seems to devalue it.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 9th 2008 4:06PM
yeah the word " game " seems more fitting than expansion now..
Bakkster @ Oct 9th 2008 3:35PM
Ah, but does it have a custom game browser so I can play Infection games?
If not, then this is a no-buy.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 9th 2008 3:36PM
This is the first step in tempting me to buy. Keep it coming Bungie and Micro, keep it coming :)
brickwalker0 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:38PM
people will buy anything with Bungie or Halo on it. i doubt gameplay will effect sales.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 9th 2008 4:37PM
Unfortunatly I'm not one of those people, I'm not a brand follower, I just get or buy whatever happens to pluck my interest, this being a Reacon or Recon (as some call it) game makes me excited, I've never been into the run gun type of games, they finish too quickly and become boring for me very fast, I like FPS games with a degree of stealth and tactics or strategy, which is why I would pick a Socom or Graw game over many.
Starting over a level because you tried to kill too many enemies at once is far more annoying then having to restart because your tactics were wrong, you simply go back in with a fresh action plan. I like that :) So I'm looking forward to seeing just how much of a Recon type of game this game will be ^^
ExMcCloud @ Oct 9th 2008 3:36PM
Im goin with the GRAW look
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/ghost-recon-creative-director-moves-to-bungie/
Travis @ Oct 9th 2008 3:37PM
it's probably lacking too much to NOT have the "Halo 3" attached to it...thus marketing it as an expansion is necessary
ExMcCloud @ Oct 9th 2008 3:39PM
I'm pretty sure putting Halo on it is enough.....Trust me I know people that are buying Halo Wars because it says Halo on it...Even though they hate RTS
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 9th 2008 3:58PM
It does seem weird, why couldn't they have called it Halo: Recon? Why the '3'?
Pedobear @ Oct 9th 2008 4:24PM
If it has Halo 3 maps, and you are playing it online with other Halo 3 players, why would it not have Halo 3 on it?
Comet @ Oct 9th 2008 3:39PM
Price? If its $60 thats a no go.
Kizzle @ Oct 9th 2008 3:46PM
It's not an expansion, it's a full game. Nothing wrong with full price on this one.
F1 @ Oct 9th 2008 3:39PM
Well I just had a Joygasom. Better go change...
TwEE @ Oct 9th 2008 3:48PM
Ok Im confused, do you play as another spartan or is that just a regular soilder?
If this is more then just an expansion pack whats with the "3"? Why not call it "4" or "0"?
If there isnt enough game there to get its own number are they selling it at a dicount price?
Do you need the elite for 4-player co-op?
Can you download the multiplayer maps from this game if you just want to stick with 3?
kinshadow @ Oct 9th 2008 3:55PM
ODST are not SPARTANs, just regular 'elite' troopers. Think Navy Seals wixed with Paratroopers .... in Space!
My guess is that enemies will be harder to kill in this game and you won't have shields. I'm also guessing this will bring a 'more' tactical edge to the game.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 9th 2008 3:55PM
I don't see whats so hard about it. This is a Halo game set before Halo 3. So calling it Halo 3: Recon makes sense (marketing and story wise) since this is a prequal of some sorts and the story for Halo 3 is "finished".
They wouldn't call it Halo 4 since that is supposedly being dev for the next launch of MS's console and MC won't be in it.
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 9th 2008 4:01PM
I just said this a few posts up, but it might be better here. I just don't understand why it has '3' attached to it, couldn't it just be Halo: Recon? It's not even a continuation of the Halo 3 story, if you're going to use a number it would make more sense to say Halo 2: Recon
This does not effect my excitement for this announcement of course.
Van @ Oct 9th 2008 6:48PM
Its called Halo 3:Recon because they are doing a Recon mission leading up to Halo 3. Recon is what you do before you start a mission to gather intelligence. DUH!
thebigL @ Oct 9th 2008 3:49PM
The fact that this still has Halo 3 attached to the title almost certainly confirms it will use the halo 3 engine this alone almost makes the game considered an expansion.
The fact that it says "ALL NEW CAMPAIGN AND MULTIPLAYER MAPS" Further confirms it's consideration as an Expansion. Joystiq seems to think that this also confirms that the old maps will still be usable too. Whether this is just assumption or they have some inside info they aren't giving us I don't know.
One hypothesis I have when it comes to the standalone disc and not being able to play the old maps from Halo 3's disc is that since NXE will allow us to put our Halo 3 onto the hard drive the expansion will use the disc image of Halo 3 on your hard drive to load all the old maps that are strictly attached to the H3 disc.
