Joystiq hands-on: The New Xbox Experience

The past several weeks have seen a lot of updates concerning the Xbox 360's upcoming interface redux, the New Xbox Experience. Yesterday, we learned that it will launch globally on November 19. We've had the opportunity to take it for a test drive in its current state (Microsoft says that new builds are produced every Friday) in order to prep you for some of the features you haven't heard about. The highlights begin after the break.

We suppose it's best to just get the negatives out right in front. The build of the NXE we tried out is incomplete, and, as such, had missing features and hiccuped during navigation every now and then. Microsoft told us that the NXE is feature-locked, and that the time remaining before release is being spent optimizing performance. That said, when it was fast (which was most of the time) it was fast.
"The time remaining before release is being spent optimizing performance." |
We also found some of the placement choices for various NXE elements a bit confusing, particularly the much talked-about Netflix component, which we expected would be near the front of the "My Xbox / Video Library" section, but wasn't. (Netflix streaming wasn't functional in the build we tried.)
Enough with the quibbles, though. Now for the good stuff.

Creating Avatars is simple and, frankly, fun. The process is exactly as detailed in Microsoft's own video walkthrough, complete with the burping (in three octaves!). There's also an option to take a snapshot of your Avatar "acting" via emotes, which can then be set as your Gamerpic. We were able to check out how the Friends channel looked with various themes applied – both existing ones (Gears of War 2, for example) and the "2.0" offerings. The system default was fittingly green-and-white, with set pieces for our friends and their parties including the original chromed Xbox 1 prototype and the robot from the original Xbox 1 "Raven" tech demo.
There's no doubting that the NXE is more organized in terms of finding content – in fact, we asked MS if it's still planning to de-list poor-selling XBLA titles now that NXE has reduced much of the clutter, and its reps said no.
"It's fast, too, on the level of the PS3 XMB – if not faster." |
Rather than a simple blade, pressing the Guide button brings up a extremely zippy, re-vamped "condensed" version of the "classic" 360 blades interface (to the tune of the Xbox 360 boot sound). Everything that could be done via the old dashboard can be found here, and more. It's fast, too, on the level of the PS3 XMB – if not faster.
The new Guide can be brought up at any point in any game, past or future, and its functionality – such as checking download status, browsing your games library, etc. – works without exiting to the NXE. In fact, you can launch from one game into another, just as on PS3 post firmware 2.4.
"We expect we'll spend most of our time using the revamped Guide." |
Despite some shortcomings, we came away from our NXE demo feeling like MS had succeeded on two fronts. It has created an interface that's much more accessible and organized for all gamers and one that's tailor-made for the hardcore. We expect we'll spend most of our time using the revamped Guide, but everyone will probably decide upon their own particular navigation "mix" – and having that choice is very nice indeed.

There's also a pretty neat video on gamespot.com - worth a look.
So excited for this.

Your website sucks.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Oct 10th 2008 11:03AM
Can we ban mcatrage's IP, on account of him being an idiot?
That would be great.
Foetoid @ Oct 9th 2008 8:12PM
This looks awesome. When i FINALLY get a 360 for Fable 2 and FFXIII, i'll be looking forward to the new interface. So where are all of Nintendos annoucements at TGS, did they not attend (it's a legitimate question).
Sora @ Oct 9th 2008 8:21PM
There's still another 3 days left of the conference, so we'll probably be seeing them this weekend.
time @ Oct 9th 2008 8:23PM
No, Nintendo did not attend.
seanemac007 @ Oct 9th 2008 8:13PM
Why or why am I forced to to change my online status EVERY SINGLE TIME I turn the machine on!? God praise "sticking".... now please deliver it to us!
Hoffer @ Oct 9th 2008 8:15PM
When you say "Multiple simultaneous file downloads still aren't possible", do you mean multiple files can't be downloading at the same time or they took away the download queue?? If they took away the download queue, I say that is the lamest thing I've ever heard. If you can still queue up a bunch and it continues to only download one at a time, I say who cares.
Dave @ Oct 9th 2008 8:20PM
I very much doubt they took around the download queue. It must be a reference to not being able to download multiple files at once.

The word simultaneous means occurring at the same time.
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2008 9:22PM
hahahah thanks mike
kids these days eh
Tiptup300 @ Oct 9th 2008 10:52PM
I hope games can take advantage of queueing. Seriously, DLC on RB kinda sucks because you have to queue up so many songs then cancel them all one by one, then goto the dash, then queue them all from the download history, then let it sit.
HazyCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 3:49PM
@ TipTup300
Just purchase your songs on the Marketplace instead of the RB music store. Problem solved. We will never be able to have any sort of background downloading while in a game. It's Microsoft's rules.
Haon @ Oct 9th 2008 8:16PM
Finally. Being as fast as the xmb is a top priority for me and I hate its current sluggishness. Also it would be nice if they had some sort of quick text response system for invites.
Hoffer @ Oct 9th 2008 8:17PM
Just thought I'd add...
It would be nice if we could queue up more than 6 things. On the PS3, you can queue way past 6 items.
BigDaddyBooth @ Oct 9th 2008 8:18PM
So, I know that as a "hardcore gamer" I'm supposed to think this is lame, and that it's only targeted to the "casual gamer".
But, I'm really excited about this. I've had my xbox since about 6 months after launch, and having the software refreshed would be really, well...refreshing!
I think its really good that the main section is very user friendly for the casual user, and the "guide" section is better for the hardcore audience. It's the best of both worlds!
dark_inchworm @ Oct 9th 2008 8:18PM
"we asked MS if it's still planning to de-list poor-selling XBLA titles now that NXE has reduced much of the clutter, and its reps said no."
GOOD. Crap games or not, that was one of the stupidest things I've ever heard out of the Microsoft camp. Thank you.
SpikeDelight @ Oct 9th 2008 8:20PM
I feel like this hits the perfect combination between Miis and Home. Home felt punctuated by the fact that you have to start the application to do it but it's very hardcore once you get in, and on Wii the Miis are integrated sometimes but there's no catering to the hardcore involved. On 360's NXE you are always in the "Home" equivalent, but there are casual AND hardcore options at any given time. Microsoft, you've done it again!
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 9th 2008 8:32PM
yea this does seem to do some on the things that Home is supposed to do. like the Party thing for example. this was a main bullet point of Home, where you and friends can jump into a game straight from a room.
and the fact that it seems to run like the XMB now (with a more visually rich presentation) gets me excited too as a huge PS3 supporter. my 360 is supposed to show up on Monday so ill have just a little over a month with the original dashboard before they roll this guy out.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 9th 2008 8:36PM
oh and about the Avatars. maybe they will be more useful than Miis because i have a Wii and i can say that those things are damn near pointless. sure it was fun making celebrities and such on it at first but the novelty of it wore off fast since they are rarely used for anything meaningful. they would have been perfect instead of a friend code IMHO. have your friend code linked to a Mii and pass that around to people.
anyway, as i say that, im not really excited about Avatars since they seem to be a very similar idea. im feel the same way about Home's avatar thing too.
SpikeDelight @ Oct 9th 2008 8:50PM
Well I think the difference for Avatars will be that you can only have one, so it'll actually mean something the way your guy looks. One thing is for sure though, I can't wait until NXE comes out!
aaron @ Oct 9th 2008 9:12PM
i actually think this will end up being better than home.... because of one crucial fact. the "home" like party stuff is integrated into the dashboard itself. this is also one of the bigger reasons i felt home was going to flop past the first few months because you have to load into it each time you want to do any of the party stuff. the party rooms are kinda cool but id much rather have everything integrated into the xmb.
now once they bring that stuff to the xmb that will be a different story but who know if they ever will (with as long as home itself has taken)
Trev @ Oct 9th 2008 9:44PM
Last I heard, you're supposed to be able to use all the features of home, such as the party system, from the XMB. Lets hope menu-based parties remain for both consoles. Meeting in a virtual room could be nice, but too convoluted for quick games.
rockstargodzu @ Oct 10th 2008 12:30AM
The point of having the avatars still escapes me, other than having them for personalization reasons. It makes sense in the PS3's Home where you're walking around amongst a crowd of other users but here it just represents if you and your friends are online or not?
I guess there may be some game tie-ins down the line but right now this doesn't seem any better than a name and a picture.
SpikeDelight @ Oct 10th 2008 3:13AM
Well the Avatars are there to have a visual representation of your party's activities and stuff. I think they could've been handled better but they work for what they're meant to do.
SexyKittyKat2U @ Oct 9th 2008 8:31PM
"It's also not possible to change settings such as your online status for Live and have them "stick" upon reboot."
What does that mean?
Sorry for my ignorance. I just have never heard of this complaint and don't really understand what you're talking about and why it's a big deal.
Vidikron @ Oct 9th 2008 8:41PM
I think he's talking about how you can set yourself to "away" or "appear offline". If you set your status through the dashboard there's no way set that as your default status or to have it automatically set the status the same as the last time you logged off. Instead, you always automatically appear "Online".
lololol @ Oct 9th 2008 8:34PM
are miis required?
That guy @ Oct 9th 2008 8:49PM
Only if you live under a rock.
Badboy1979 @ Oct 9th 2008 9:13PM
Yup, Avatars are required... with that said, you can just select one of the ones that's auto generated for you at the beginning and be done with it.
http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/918/918113p1.html
I personally plan on customizing mine... although I'm too in love with my limited edition PDZ gamerpic to allow myself to take a pic of my Avatar to replace it. I'm glad they've keep the old themes and gamerpics involved in the NXE.
Markez @ Oct 9th 2008 11:02PM
Whoa, balls on a heffer, I'm surprised those are really required now. There were people being dbags all over the place whining about this, I'm surprised they made it requisite. I guess this is another one of those things that morons can point to as the "death of gaming as we know it."
Frowl @ Oct 9th 2008 8:53PM
I dont like the new xbox interface and I hate that I will be forced to use it.
Jordan @ Oct 9th 2008 8:59PM
You aren't forced. You are given the option to stay with the old dashboard.
Badboy1979 @ Oct 9th 2008 9:14PM
YES, you are required to download the NXE and to take at least a couple of seconds to create an Avatar.
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2008 9:26PM
you like the old interface better than the new one? for real? with the TERRIBLY slow, ugly, unorganized interface?
you have terrible taste.
Markez @ Oct 9th 2008 11:04PM
I'm accustomed to the old interface. That being said, I'll only miss the old interface BECAUSE I'm used to it. I'm sure the new one will be easy and comfortable to get the hang of, it's not like they'll really make it worse, cmon.
Nobody is peeing on your wedding cake, pal, relax.
Delgado @ Oct 10th 2008 12:10PM
I want to pee on someones wedding cake, just to see what happens.
lantus @ Oct 9th 2008 9:01PM
Hopefully this massive transition goes smoothly, I'd be a bummer if things f*** up when it goes live worldwide.
countCOKula @ Oct 9th 2008 9:24PM
you can change your live settings so that you are always appearing offline many of my friends on my friends list are always offline even though they are online
doodie @ Oct 9th 2008 10:26PM
But if you turn your system off, it doesn't remember your status. So each time you turn the xbox on you have to change your status to "appear offline" or what have you. That's the point they're making.
gorthon @ Oct 10th 2008 1:22PM
no you can change it so that everytime u log on to xbox live it says you are offline
XLM @ Oct 9th 2008 10:18PM
I'm really looking forward to it because I've never liked the 360 interface much although I did get used to it, but it didn't lend itself to discovery.
I wonder, will this eventually be just referred to as the dashboard again? I mean it can't always be called NXE right?
It won't always be new, and for anyone getting in on the 360 after it goes live, it's just the XE right (cause they have no OXE).
Sorry, I'm just hyper marketing speak averse.
PeVo @ Oct 9th 2008 11:13PM
It's going to be great having the the new resolution settings!
Tephlon @ Oct 10th 2008 10:57AM
"I wonder, will this eventually be just referred to as the dashboard again? I mean it can't always be called NXE right?"
lol. While you make a good point, you must also remember that this is Microsoft... while I love many of their products, they're not so the awesome with the naming.
It will be just like Windows NT methinks.
wiredknight @ Oct 10th 2008 2:49AM
How do you know, you haven't used it...
wiredknight @ Oct 10th 2008 2:50AM
Wups.
Dark Freddie @ Oct 10th 2008 4:41AM
Don't get up on someone just because they differ in opinion from you. I don't like the idea of this new update. I could care less for the new design because I never thought the old design was all that bad, but then again I've been playing video games for a long time, like back when I only turned on my game console to, I don't know, play a game. The big turn off is the non-optional avatar you're forced to stare at each time you log onto your system. I mean honestly, anyone who can look at the avatar at the top of the page and not think, "You know, that thing is a wee bit queer," is not alright in my book. Take you're pick. To me it looks like Chucky went gay and wants to stab me in innapropriate places.
Anthony S @ Oct 10th 2008 3:54PM
You could always boot straight to the game in the tray and just use the mini dashboard when you need to.
DanoBoogie @ Oct 10th 2008 7:53AM
Why do people need to appear offline all the time? Are you hiding from the FBI or something?
