I don't think a 3D Castlevania will ever work, and I believe that many people are tired of Konami trying to make it work. What I think the real fans of the series want to see is Igrashi really push the envelope when it comes to what can be done with a game set in a 2D perspective. The popularity of the handheld games and resurgence of beautiful sprite animation (Odin Sphere, Braid) shows that interest in 2D is not dead, and I think if there is someone who can make something spectacular, it is Igrashi. I don't think that the potential of 2D games have been tapped yet, and I think that it is more likely for a Castlevania game to have eye-bleeding, highly detailed sprites that blow your mind than making a good 3D Castlevania game that actually feels like a Castlevania game.

Actually, I'd flip tmac's question around and ask why do we need another 3D adventure game? The Metroidvania formula makes for fantastic games and Castlevania is one of the last good 2D adventure games around. It almost sounds like tmac is asking for the death of 2D gaming completely... which would be a tragedy, IMO.

Yes, there's a lot of rehashing and I do think they need to shake things up a bit, but to go 3D? No thanks. We've got plenty of 3D games and not enough 2D games outside casual puzzles games.

Because they've proven time and time again that they can't do anything else but rehash SoTN and quite frankly I've had enough with the franchise until they try something new that doesn't suck.

If I call out nintendo for rehashing their franchises all the time it's only fair I call others out too.

I agree that rehashing can get annoying... and as far as Nintendo goes, I get more annoyed at them putting their characters in every damn game than I do about sequels to exisiting franchises.

But, again, there just aren't many games like this anymore. A switch to 3D would leave virtually nothing else to play. And, personally, I don't think the 2D games do suck, but the 3D ones have. You say they've proven they can do nothing but rehash SotN, but I'd say they've also proven that they can't do Castevania in 3D properly.

So I'd much rather see them try something new in the 2D realm rather than go 3D. I mean, what do you expect them to do in 3D that games like God of War, Ninja Gaiden, or DMC haven't done yet? I'm not saying there's nothing new to try in 3D, but I'd say the same for 2D. And since we have almost no good 2D games left, I'd just prefer they stick with that. Plus, I really wish someone would attempt 2D game with true HD sprites. I don't know if that's what we'll get, but that's what I'm hoping for. From an asthetic standpoint I think it would blow the doors off almost every 3D game in existence. It would take a lot of work to make one though.

For once I agree with Vidikron. I want a highly detailed 2d game, maybe with a hand painted background, I want to be playing a work of art. I don't want to see any 3d sprites like in New Super Mario Bros. I do however want nice physics, detailed animation for every single movement, even twisting a doorknob, and for armor to make a change on not only the stats but the appearance and how the character moves.

And we already have a great 3d Castlevania game, just without dracula or a whip, they call it DMC.

I actually really enjoyed Lament of Innocence, the ONLY problem I had was the less than sophisticated level design. That was probably based on hardware limitations. Now, if they're able to build a game that has the same intricate level design as say SOTN, but done in 3d.. with great action gameplay.. Count me in!
