TGS 08: Monster Hunter 3 hands-on

While the series move from PlayStation 3 to Wii can be attributed to cutting development costs, no expense has been spared on the game's visuals. Monster Hunter 3 (or "Monster Hunter Tri~" ... ?) is one of the sharpest Wii games we've seen. It's also immediately recognizable as a Monster Hunter game. There's been no style change at all from other versions, just an upscaling of models and textures. The game's water looks impressive for a Wii title, which is important because Monster Hunter 3 is the first game in the series where you'll be going swimming.
Gallery: Monster Hunter 3
The swimming sections look on par with Endless Ocean, only you've got a giant sword, and offer the player the ability to hunt new types of undersea monsters. No doubt this will justify the purchase of yet another Monster Hunter game for many Japanese fans -- not like there's really anything preventing that outcome. Despite the player being given a decent amount of wiggle room underwater, we're not sure the ability to swim will add much more variety to the gameplay. You're still hunting monsters, after all.
Unfortunately, the controls are quite complicated and, for a newcomer to the series, they take a while to learn. While the Wiimote and Nunchuk feel like a good fit for the game, things start to break down as you progress. While you can waggle to attack, it seems unlikely you'll get very far with it. Attacking in Monster Hunter is about timing and combos, and the Wiimote feels imprecise, not to mention, exhausting. Instead, the A-button will perform a primary attack, while the Z-button handles secondary swipes.

There are other aspects of the controls which feel overcomplicated, too, such as the weapon sheathing and drawing. The character we tried out had an incredibly heavy sword, which seemed to take half a minute to swing! The easiest way to time a first hit is to sheath your sword (the 1-button), then draw it (the Plus-button) when a monster is nearby, hitting it in the process. Obviously this button combo makes for counter-intuitive controls. Of course, devotees will likely overcome this, but it's potentially off-putting to anyone else. It's a shame because the combat animations turn out to be quite visceral, with a sense of weight to the weapon you're wielding and the force of impact it makes on a living creature.
While we had trouble defeating our intended target (thanks to the speed of our chosen character's movement and attacks), other innocent creatures nearby stood still long enough for us to get some good hits in. The death animations of these large, vegetarian dinosaurs were unnerving, as the "monsters" writhed on the ground in their final moments. Maybe we're not so cut out for this monster hunting business ... At least, not on our own.
One of the main attractions of the Monster Hunter series has been its multiplayer. Monster Hunter 3 is no exception as it will include online play with friends. But only friends, thanks to Nintendo's infamous code system. There's no indication as to exactly how this will work yet, but hopefully the mode will be made as painless and unintrusive as possible. [Update] Playing with specific friends will require friend code swapping, but playing with other random players is possible thanks to a lobby system. With a dearth of upcoming first-party titles geared toward the "Core," it's titles like Monster Hunter 3 that could keep faith alive. That's true for Japan, at least, when the game releases next year. We're betting this one can be popular in the West, too. Sadly, there's no definite confirmation that will ever happen. But you never know.

Looking forward to this one...damn the game looks good!
SecretAgentHam @ Oct 9th 2008 8:40PM
still remaining optimistic for this one! i've got too many friends with wii's for this to bomb. i need a new multiplayer game!
Foetoid @ Oct 9th 2008 8:44PM
Wow, this game looks fantastic, graphically of course.
Bahamett @ Oct 9th 2008 8:46PM
Oh man I can not wait for this game. I was very sad when they shut down the PS2 Monster Hunter servers. This is one of the reasons I bought a PS3, but I already have a Wii So I don't mind at all.
SpikeDelight @ Oct 9th 2008 8:52PM
Damn! Those screenshots look fucking amazing for a Wii game!
SuperGayParade @ Oct 9th 2008 8:55PM
would've been a lot better with a dualshock and PSN. Too bad, MH fans.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:04PM
It's doing a damn good job at utilizing the capabilities of the Wii. Fuck, it had a more complete online systems than most games do today... way back on the PS2.
Nice attempt at trolling though.
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2008 9:14PM
would have been better without supergayparade that's for sure
SuperGayParade @ Oct 9th 2008 9:20PM
not trolling at all... you're getting a multiplayer "MMO"-worthy game with friend codes only? You're getting a control sensitive game meant for the traditional controller on the Wii-stick.
It's unfortunate for the series. Let's just say Monster Hunter 4 (For) won't be on the Wii.
Xoviet chiK - Bungie Fangirl @ Oct 9th 2008 9:23PM
You can play Monster Hunter 3 with a Classic Controller.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:23PM
Seems like you've come back to the NDF fold neatly, Fatass
At least in the sense of helping fight the FUD fires neatly.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:23PM
"not trolling at all... you're getting a multiplayer "MMO"-worthy game with friend codes only?"
No, Joystiq just dropped the ball with this article. MH3 uses the same city-lobby system the series has always used, but on a larger scale this time around (even includes offline co-op if you're into that). No FCs required.
"You're getting a control sensitive game meant for the traditional controller on the Wii-stick."
Have you ever even played a Monster Hunter game? I can't imagine a better controller type for MH than the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo. And if thats not your thing, CLASSIC CONTROLLER SUPPORT WAS CONFIRMED JUST YESTERDAY.
Way to go, smart guy. Have you ever even played a MH game?
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:25PM
Not NDF, just GGDF, as in good game defense force. Right now I'm sticking to Wii news since I just moved into a cramped ass dorm room and my bro wanted to keep the 360 at his house... I'm a one system dude again.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:32PM
Hell, that's all you need to be. Shooting down the FUD is what we spend most of our energy on anyway.
That being said, you picked the wrong year to be stuck with Wii. You'll suffer the next couple of months, though it'll be a neat 2009.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 9th 2008 9:34PM
Every wii game that's not whored out gimmicky motion controls would be better on the 360/ps3 that's just simple fact. As good as it looks here it would look 10 times better.
That doesn't change the fact that I wouldn't be interested in it no matter what system it's on :P
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:37PM
Then why even comment, Tmac?
"Holy shit, the Wii's getting a game that's being praised. Better go set them straight!"
You've seen how often I can agree with you but you've been getting a bit irritating with it as of late. Regardless of whether or not it'd be better on another system, the fact of the matter is that it's going to end up a good game anyway and will be a welcome addition to the Wii's roster.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 8:55PM
It's been a while since there hasn't been a Wii game which didn't look too last-gen.
Raikage (Mr. ESC? Mr. ESC? MR. ESSSSSSCCCCCC!) @ Oct 10th 2008 2:53AM
It's been a while since there has been a Wii game which looks on par/better than last-gen.
*FIXED*
Nofriendo @ Oct 10th 2008 9:51PM
Wow tmac this must be some amazing factual evidence you have here, because if it was on the PS3 it wouldn't just look like just some more repetitive high textured bull shit for miles. The wii has had more style and art direction in its games than the PS3's lame campaign of "high level realism" that most minds just reject anyway.
and as for whoring, that prostitute still owes you $200 for the bad BJ it gave you at launch.
Cody @ Oct 9th 2008 9:01PM
I hope this begins to put an end to the shenanigans regarding Wii's visual potential...
SoulBlade @ Oct 9th 2008 9:50PM
sadly it wont since fools will always compare it to the ps3/360
Vidikron @ Oct 10th 2008 12:22PM
Potential unrealized means nothing. A couple of games that look good, by Wii standards, won't change the Wii's image in this regard.
&rew @ Oct 9th 2008 9:02PM
The swimming looks interesting, about as jumping in a freezing lake wearing 300 pounds of metal, and the lake is full of sea-monsters.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:10PM
"Monster Hunter 3 is no exception as it will include online play with friends. But only friends, thanks to Nintendo's infamous code system."
Uh, wrong - the main city acts as a lobby to meet and play with others. You're not restricted to those who you've added as friends.
arrrgh @ Oct 9th 2008 9:15PM
:O seriously?>
if that's true, this is day one for me
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:19PM
Awh man, beat me to the punch
I've been watching The Office, my response time is down. I seem to remember reading of a lobby system, too, back when the first Famitsu article was run.
Fernando Rocker @ Oct 9th 2008 9:24PM
That's the problem with people with no Wii experiencie.
Every online game on the Wii has a lobby (SSBB, Mario Kart, Medal of Honor, Bomberman, etc.) and you can play every game online with random people without the need of friend codes.
The friend codes are only to add specific friends.
Is the same with Monster Hunter... like TFoK said, the city acts as a lobby.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Oct 10th 2008 2:04AM
I wouldn't call it a lobby, Fernando... You can't see what games are in progress... It's more of a random matchmaker.
At least with Smash, you have a lobby for Friends... but not with random people.
(and, hell, I can never get a With Anyone game to work... I always get disconnected from timeouts...).
Still, MH3 will have a lobby, and that's good.
And even so, Friend Codes are cumbersome. Because if you wanted to play against the same person in five different games, you'd need five different codes. Yes, you only have to do it once per game... but it's still annoying.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:17PM
Who actually said it would use Friend Codes, though? Sony made 3rd parties host their own games on PS2 if i recall, and Capcom would be perfectly capable of doing so on Wii
WiFi Connection is not mandatory, it's just the far cheaper alternative to going it alone. And, of course, even if it did, it would still allow play with randoms, otherwise being totally obstructive to the play experience
No assumptions, as of yet.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 9th 2008 9:20PM
It's already been confirmed that the game doesn't use friend codes as it's primary online method and instead uses the same lobby system it has always used. I think Joystiq just wants moar hits through flame wars.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:27PM
I seem to recall another article by the author in question that was quite provocative in a very deliberate way.
AwesomeTown @ Oct 9th 2008 9:23PM
This looks amazing, especially visually. It'll be a f'n shame if it doesn't come over here to the US.
Snowblind @ Oct 9th 2008 9:31PM
It definitely will. Even though the other MH games haven't done so well, this is a Wii game, and is guaranteed to sell even it's garbage. With a decent amount of hype, it could do very well, which is probably why they shifted development from the PS3 over to the Wii.
It would have been nice to see a PS3 version of the game, but even as it is, this looks fantastic. This is one of the reasons I haven't sold my Wii.
SoulBlade @ Oct 9th 2008 9:52PM
Let's see how many times Fatass has to tell people that there's a lobby system.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 9:55PM
But if Joystiq said it, it must be true!
Should definitely update that statement, though. Reflects poorly on the site if people think their correspondents are ill-informed.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 9th 2008 10:04PM
Was just waiting for screen shots, and alas, I have been awarded, now I just need to get my hands on MH2G and wait for the announcement of the next PSP MH MMORPG and we are ready to go ^^
Joe @ Oct 9th 2008 10:05PM
I think Moster Hunter 3 looks great. I just have a question how well does the game push the Wii like could you see Capcom bring Monster Hunter 3 to the PSP later down the line.
I hope MH3 is a Wii only game because I really want to see how much Capcom can push the game on the I just could see Capcom trying to bring the game to the PSP too just to get some more money. So please tell me what you think the chances of this game are coming to the PSP.
Also will Capcom bring the game to the US.
Mr Khan @ Oct 9th 2008 10:14PM
Though we've seen the PSP capable of doing great things (Chains of Olympus and especially Resistance Retribution), i doubt it could do it.
It's a scale thing. The problem is, when its in the ballpark like that, you can't *know* definitively, unless the developer themselves gave the proof.
Superstar90 @ Oct 9th 2008 10:25PM
Have you seen this game? In it's current form, they would have to downgrade significantly to make it a PSP game...
But still, no doubt that Monster Hunter Portable 3 will be on PSP in 6-12 months. And they might even use the same designs and art from the Wii game...
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Oct 10th 2008 2:09AM
The difference between the PS2 Monter Hunters and the PSP Monster Hunters is that the PSP ones were huge sellers. At least, in Japan.
Japan, in general, prefers local multiplayer over online multiplayer (which is why you have companies like Nintendo screaming and kicking their feet about online gaming).
PS2 MHs only had online multiplayer. PSP MHs only had offline multiplayer. This alone made them more appealing to the Japanese taste.
Now, this is also where MH3 will differ from the PS2 MHs in that it features both online multiplayer AND offline multiplayer (through split-screen). So, I can see this being far more appealing than previous entries in the series.
But, if it doesn't do well, expect a Monter Hunter Freedom 3 soon.
Superstar90 @ Oct 9th 2008 10:22PM
Seriously, Monsters are like the Osama Bin Laden of Japan. If they aren't capturing them in artight plastic balls, they are brutally murdering them with giant swords.
They get the kids in early with Pokemon and the cutesy cel shaded RPGs, then they grow up into Monster Hunters and take down massive Colossi... sheesh!
t_m @ Oct 9th 2008 10:22PM
Looks great.
From watching everyone play it on the train it appears to be the most boring, repetitive game ever made... but it does look nice.
Still, maybe its a lot more fun to play than to watch...
SoulBlade @ Oct 9th 2008 10:27PM
"it appears to be the most boring, repetitive game ever made"
ever seen WoW?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 10th 2008 12:06AM
Welcome to the world of MMOrpgs. All of those type of games seem boring when watching them. But some of them are actually fun to play.
t_m @ Oct 10th 2008 11:18AM
lol. fair point.
Though at least when i see people playing Wow I imagine they have friends on there and stuff... watching people play Monster Hunter on the train doesn't even have that. ;-)
Josh @ Oct 9th 2008 11:43PM
I think we all assumed it would be Friend Codes only. No surprise there.
But, I've never played a Monster Hunter game, and I *really* want to, so this better come out in North America.
Josh @ Oct 13th 2008 1:31AM
Hehe, scratch that, thanks to the update in the post.
I'm curious how much you'll be able to interact with random players, though...
Josh @ Oct 13th 2008 1:32AM
Errr, "scratch that" refers to the first part of my first post...I definitely still want this game to be released over here. ^_^
Moojuice @ Oct 13th 2008 12:50AM
will buy on day one. cant wait. this is going to rule my life.
