TGS 08: Resistance 2 infects PSP's Retribution, unlocks new features

Earlier, we noted that you'll be able to use your DualShock controller with Retribution through a new feature called PSP Plus. However, there's even more fun to be had through the game's unique Infection mode. In this new feature, players can connect PSP's Resistance Retribution via USB cable to a PS3 running Resistance 2. From R2, players can go into the menu and activate Infection, which will almost instantly transform the PSP game.

PSP-PS3 connectivity transfers the Chimeran virus from the console game into the handheld adventure. Your character will gain the abilities of PS3's Nathan Hale. You'll be able to breathe underwater indefinitely, and you'll also have regenerating health (no more health packs!). Just these two changes radically alter the gameplay experience. Your character is not only stronger, but will have access to areas inaccessible otherwise.
For example, you'll be able to swim to places far beyond the reach of a non-infected player. Entirely new passageways will be open for players to explore. The reason? Well, the developers came up with a cute excuse: Chimeran pheremones that open up otherwise locked doors. These hard-to-reach places usually hide a piece of intel, which goes into greater depth of Resistance lore. There are over 60 pieces of goodies to find in the standard adventure, and then 20 more in the new Infected mode.
There are other goodies transplanted from R2. You'll also get access to new weapons, like the powerful Magnum featured in the console adventure. There are also sticky grenades you can access (but only after collecting all the pieces of intel). What we appreciated most about the implementation of Infection is the slight change to the game's narrative. The characters of this alternate Resistance story will acknowledge that you're infected with the Chimeran virus. While the overall story won't change too much, it's nice to see that you are essentially getting two distinct stories with the addition of this new bonus connectivity option.

Players will have the ability to go through the game with or without the PSP Plus DualShock option. Those that use the PS3 controller will have a rather different experience than those using just the PSP. Not only will they have expanded dual-analog controls, but they will have rumble that's as tailored as any other PS3 game. Aim assist will be turned off completely, making the play experience a bit more challenging (and perhaps, satisfying) than usual. With Infection mode, players will be creating a play environment most similar to that of R2.
However, those that opt not to take advantage of either of these connectivity options (lack of PS3, for example) need not worry. The game is easily the most impressive game on PSP to date, and these cute offerings are simply nice additions to a game that's already shaping up to be a must-have on the handheld. The third-generation Bend engine is doing things that should be unheard of on any handheld -- and does so with a steady framerate and an incredible amount of detail. Just look at these screens: this game does a great job of recreating R2's look and feel, especially on the more vibrant PSP-3000 screen.
Bend has already proven themselves with the excellent Syphon Filter games on PSP. Now, it looks like they're set to raise the PSP standard again. Connectivity is gimmicky, of course -- but this time, we can't help feel but it was done right. Looks like those PS3 fans are finally going to cave in and buy a PSP. And those PSP owners? Looks like you may want to pick up Sony's big black box some time too. You wouldn't want to miss out on something like this, would you?

So content is being hidden from you if you don't have the extravagant combo of PSP, PS3, & the two games?
How does this mean "they're doing it right"?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 9th 2008 12:09PM
It's not hidden, it's optional. None of it is required but if you're a diehard and you just need to know what Chimerans smell like, then you should seek out the extra intel. Besides that, it's just fan service.
apotheos @ Oct 9th 2008 12:11PM
This seems obligatory:

Agreed.

hahahah that penny arcade comic was hilarious, at first i thought you were gonna be posting it to complan like JPW, but kudos, perfect post.
thesimplicity @ Oct 9th 2008 12:30PM
Yeah, I don't really see how this is 'connectivity' done right. This is more like 'unlockables' done... um, extensively. When i think of connectivity, I think of something like Crystal Chronicles or Four Swords Adventures, where you use the handheld and the console *together*.
This is certainly neat, but it's just unlocking optional stuff that's on your PSP game. It's not really changing the way you interact with your PSP and PS3.
Noshino @ Oct 9th 2008 12:43PM
thesimplicity,
Actually, not even those 2 games that you mentioned did "connectivity" well, they were just extra controllers and added almost nothing new to the table.
One of the games that I do believe did Connectivity right, and that was actually fun, was the Sonic game for GameCube.
Anyway, this seems more to be an expansion, and as for whether the content is already on the disc, nothing has been said, they could have done it multiple ways, imo, they should have put the Retribution "extras" on the R2 disc and viceversa, so they don't get complaints about why make them pay extra for content that is already on the disc.
Courtney @ Oct 9th 2008 2:10PM
Agreed, this is not "done right." It's a thinly veiled gimmick they can add to the bullet points on the back of the boxes.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 9th 2008 12:09PM
This feature is definitely pretty cool. I think this is one of the few connectivity things done right for handhelds in a while.
JayVe @ Oct 9th 2008 3:36PM
Courtney above you has it right when they say, "It's a thinly veiled gimmick they can add to the bullet points on the back of the boxes."
This isn't nearly as interesting or useful as a lot of Nintendo's connectivity experiments, which mostly proved to the world that connectivity isn't worth the necessary hardware/software/setup for the results. Games that were completely built around the function, such as Pac Man Vs and 4-Swords were excellent. This isn't anything like that. It is a gimmick that I wish the developers hadn't wasted time on instead of making their games universally excellent.
Clutch_beast @ Oct 9th 2008 7:30PM
Insomniac would be hard pressed not to make their games universally excellent. Do I plan to utilize this "feature?" No. But I have yet to see much Insomniac has even touched in the past six years that I could not call universally excellent, and so I won't slight them for it. I hardly think that this will detract from anyone's experience playing either game. It is, at most, a cute little bonus if you happen to own both. It was never intended to be the crux of either game, and if it has to be such in order to meet your standards of "done right," then ignore it. Both games will likely be of highest caliber in their own right.
apotheos @ Oct 9th 2008 12:12PM
So..how exactly do you play a PSP game with a DualShock 3? Do I need some elaborate headwear to prop the screen in front of my face? I can't imagine proping it on a table or a stack of books satisfying.
mkernan @ Oct 9th 2008 12:16PM
You hook up a TV-out cable to your TV.
KarlW @ Oct 9th 2008 1:50PM
Unless you have a PSP-1000, in which case you need to grow an extra arm
apotheos @ Oct 9th 2008 3:07PM
Or use the PSP as a portable device. I think "features" that go against the main "feature" of the PSP are probably ill conceived.
Albanian_Killa @ Oct 9th 2008 12:14PM
Actually, SOCOM 3 and Combined Assault for the PS2 had connectivity with Fireteam Bravo 1 and 2 on the PSP, so technically, Sony isn't a generation late ;)
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 9th 2008 12:28PM
Yeah, but those "Crosstalk" things weren't nearly as ambitious as this is.
Jakka @ Oct 9th 2008 12:14PM
Seems like a cool idea, but I think they went a tad too far with it.
Haggard (Mr.ESC resurrected on a... thursday?!) @ Oct 9th 2008 12:21PM
I'd say it's unbalanced, but since it's single-player, I'll go with "guilt-free cheats".
Noshino @ Oct 9th 2008 12:34PM
thing is, this is really a cheat since new areas with these extras in mind will also become available.
I would call it an expansion.
fyreblazer @ Oct 9th 2008 12:38PM
How dope would it be if Best Buy, Circuit City or Gamestop gave you an Infection I.O.U. if you pre-order the PSP game.
that guy @ Oct 9th 2008 12:49PM
I don't feel like reading this over again, so can someone just tell me - is there any 'bonus' for the Resistance 2 (PS3) game, or is all the cool bonus stuff carried over to Retribution only?
velvetelvis @ Oct 9th 2008 1:19PM
you dont have to own a ps3, just need access to one. once you dl the infection you have it, connected or not. so, lets say, your local game store has a ps3 up and running, they might have a time when you can come in and hook up. if they dont, you could always ask them to.
CaptCalvin @ Oct 9th 2008 1:58PM
nope, that wont do. ign says these features will only be available for one boot after they are unlocked. so unless you want to keep resistance running on your psp for as long your psp lives, you'll need a ps3 evey time you wanna unlock the stuff.
ill trooper @ Oct 9th 2008 1:52PM
I don't know... Too many conditions to meet. Confusing. Not interested yet. Maybe later when this stuff is actually out.
flavarican @ Oct 9th 2008 1:59PM
this is the same as the old school sonic & knuckles.... u wanna see more and unlock everything? well there you go.
SytheMaster @ Oct 9th 2008 3:55PM
Do you think that I will be able to transfer these things over to my psp via my friends ps3 since I don't have one?
Kilo720 @ Oct 9th 2008 4:18PM
that is so cool can wait for both game
but u alway could a sixaxis or ds3 on the psp xmb using remote play just dont press circle or it cancel it
SoF|0nyX|CcL @ Oct 9th 2008 4:52PM
You guys sure like to complain huh? This is a really cool thing they are doing here, it is allowing people to do things with their psp and ps3 together besides transfer demos and themes over to (which will be obsolete soon anyway). This is not punishment cuz "its already on the disc" it is a different way to unlock extra content. Instead of having to pass the game on uber-1337 without dying once and getting nothing but headshots, it is giving you immediate access.
And as for it ruining the portability of the psp... wtf are you talking about!?!? They aren't asking you to super glue your psp to your tv. If you wanna take it with you then do so, you aren't obligated to have it hooked up. I personally like the idea of playing a game on the road, then getting home and plugging it into my ps3 so i can kick back on the couch and play on my tv with a normal controller.
Jacksons @ Oct 9th 2008 5:46PM
That's really weird, but I'll certainly give it a shot :)
Ivan_PSP @ Oct 9th 2008 8:59PM
I can't wait for this game to come out i will buy it no matter what. I already have a PSP and a PS3 plus i pre-order Resistance 2.
t_m @ Oct 9th 2008 10:24PM
Its like two GBA/GCN conectivities duck-taped together!
CaptCalvin @ Oct 10th 2008 10:12AM
nope, that wont do. ign says these features will only be available for one boot after they are unlocked. so unless you want to keep resistance running on your psp for as long your psp lives, you'll need a ps3 evey time you wanna unlock the stuff.
