Fixed Alone in the Dark gets new name for PS3
Those fixes promised for the upcoming PS3 version of Alone in the Dark are substantial. So much so that Atari and developer Eden Games have decided to rebrand their survival horror romp through Central Park with a fiery subtitle, Alone in the Dark: Inferno. Set for release on November 18, the new version aims to correct many of the annoyances found in last June's release, changes Atari notes were fuelled by media and player feedback, and not -- repeat not -- by a Edward Carnby-shaped totem set ablaze on their front lawn.
Inferno's changes include "quicker and smoother" controls and 360-degree camera control, as well as a "more logical" inventory system, improved car handling and a better tip system. Atari also promises "an exclusive new sequence" in one portion of the game for more "excitement and variety." As for those of you who purchased the fettered Xbox 360 version, we're waiting to hear back from Atari if plans exist to patch that version, or if players should simply get used to watching Edward Carnby roast in a 'technically complicated' fire.

I was interesting in the game, but then played the demo for 360. It seemed like an interesting game, but those clunky controls among other things really turned me away. If Atari decides to fix the 360 version, I might be more interested.
SecretAgentHam @ Oct 10th 2008 5:09PM
sucks for xbox owners... much. cant they release an equal version?
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 10th 2008 6:01PM
For a while they talked about a patch for unlucky 360 owners to provide the new tweaks, but "budget issues" have deflated all talk of that.
Shame really, MS and Atari were responsible for having it rushed out for exclusivity before it was ready, they should spring for the patch developement.
shawn @ Oct 10th 2008 5:17PM
played the game and liked it,the controls were a little screwy but i got used to them
Markez @ Oct 10th 2008 5:19PM
So where does the truth lie with this game? It got absolutely reemed by most of the reviews I read, but I know better than to rely on those.
syrik zero @ Oct 10th 2008 5:28PM
I played the game for Wii thinking it would be fun and I didn't read any reviews before playing. I quit within an hour because I couldn't get past the horrible conrols and other things. So I may rent the PS3 version. So if it's any good. But there are so many GOOD games coming that I'm sure I'll never get around to it. And that makes me angry that Atari states their fu*k ups were "were fuelled by media and player feedback" that is BS. It was horrible IMO

some loved it. many hated it.
It depends on the kind of gamer you are. Do you like a polished experience where every rough edge has been smoothed out... or are you willing to overlook some big flaws for the cool parts?
You definitely need to be the second kind of gamer to enjoy this game... it has some awesome moments, and great potential, and tried hard.. but it has some frustrating moments.
DudeRed @ Oct 10th 2008 5:37PM
I really hope they patch the 360 version. I was really interested in the game before its release but never picked it up because I just got very busy and didn't have time for games. Then I heard they might fix a lot of the problems with it, so I have been waiting to give it a try. At the very least it would be nice for them to just re-release the game for the 360.
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 7:19PM
I'm the same as you.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 10th 2008 5:39PM
So the game loves fire so much, it's become part of its subtitle?! Why don't they just call the sequel FIRE BURN! FIRE BOOM! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!
Jophiel @ Oct 11th 2008 12:35AM
They invented a patch that makes a game fun?
Slayer @ Oct 10th 2008 5:45PM
I played it, I didn't care too much for it and the controls were bad.
j.howlett @ Oct 10th 2008 5:52PM
ooh fire
David @ Oct 10th 2008 6:01PM
You know what would be FANTASTIC? If before releasing a rebranded version of the game for another console, they FIXED the existing one that some of us, you know... already paid for. That would be fucking great. I wanted so hard to like that game, and it seemed so cool, but it was just so damn frustrating to play. This re-release should be a patch for the other editions of the game. Atari owes it to everyone who already bought AITD.
wired2thewall @ Oct 10th 2008 8:35PM
Now there is the passion I thought I would see from Xbox 360 owners when they realized they had a half baked console sold to them. Microsoft releases EVERYTHING before it's ready and then tries to fix it with a second release. Zune, Xbox, Visio (the first version after they bought it was terrible), Office, Windows, Windows Mobile,... the list goes on and on. They do end up making a decent product in the end though but a lot of people have to get... ahem... burned by them first.
Back on topic though, I think I will give this a shot as I've always liked the AITD series and it looks like they really fixed all the issues that was on the 360 version. I do feel for the 360 owners though, first they have to beta test a console and now they have to do it again for software on that console. ;)

@Jackass... er wired2thewall,
He was complaining about a GAME published by ATARI, an Atari who you will note is not called Microsoft. Please also note that Alone in the Dark is not a game console, but a game.
As for the console? Xbox 360 IS round 2, and you're absolutely correct, MS did get it right this time... which is something you'd probably have realized were your vision not so obscured by Sony as you suckle at their teat. ;)
David @ Oct 11th 2008 5:16PM
For the record, I'm actually not talking about the 360 version of the game -- I own it for PC, and actually don't have a 360. They've been talking about not patching the 360 version because of patch size limits, but there's been almost no talk about the PC version, which doesn't have such size constraints on patches and is JUST as broken.
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 10th 2008 6:04PM
I am HIGHLY interested in seeing if there is a boost in review scores for this one.
I'm sure there will also be some smugness from the reviewers about how their reviews got a broken game fixed.
But hey, fair enough, it was rushed out to begin with.
Bass Masterson @ Oct 10th 2008 6:11PM
Considering that the people who complain about "horrible controls" are the same ones who could never grasp the brilliance of Resident Evil until it turned into Resident Just Another Third Person Shooter ... maybe you should ignore them.
Alone in the Dark is solid. This will make it better. Hey, 360 guys - thanks for the beta testing!
rafael @ Oct 12th 2008 5:07PM
screw this game.
I'm still waiting for my ps3 orange box patch.
Jon D @ Oct 10th 2008 10:55PM
i loved the demo I played on my friends 360. I'll definitely be picking this up on day one.
