New AC adapter can charge PS3 peripherals
Our friends in Japan will soon be able to free their USB ports from the tyranny of charging SIXAXISes (SIXAXES?), as Sony has announced they'll soon be releasing an AC adapter that can charge two PS3 peripherals. It's coming to Japan on Dec. 18 for 2,800 yen (about $28 USD).
No, we don't have a date on a U.S. release yet, but, our knowledgable friends at PS3 Fanboy hypothesize it will be cheaper when it reaches our shores.

Maybe then you shouldn't do it alone then :)
Roddie @ Oct 10th 2008 2:38PM
Wow(!)
bkirst90 @ Oct 10th 2008 2:41PM
Couldn't you just use one of the regular universal USB charger that are already available?
Like this one? http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=195728&om_keycode=823003
Cheesecake Jones @ Oct 10th 2008 2:55PM
Yes, you can. I bought an adapter at Wal-Mart for $11 dollars last year that meets all my USB charging needs.

Am I missing the point of this?
McBrick @ Oct 10th 2008 3:23PM
I think you are.
But I am too.
Bluebrake @ Oct 10th 2008 3:56PM
I think it's pretty cool. The PS3 ports don't charge when the system's off, so if your TV is a normal distance from your couch you basically have 3 options when the controller goes dead: 1) play on the floor hunched in front of your TV using that horribly short included cable for a few hours, 2) plug the controller into a PC or something else with active USB ports (during which time you can't turn off the PC or use the controller), or 3) buy a longer cable. I went with option 3, personally, but this would have been handy before that. You could just plug into this adapter, which is always on, and leave it.
Mind you, it's not cool enough that I'd actually buy it, but if it had been included with the system it would have been a very handy bonus.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Oct 10th 2008 2:44PM
Or you could just buy some generic one with four USB ports for $5.
SecretAgentHam @ Oct 10th 2008 2:48PM
they should just allow the USB ports to give juice when on "Stand By" mode so i can let it charge when not in use. the xbox can do it... my PC's can do it...WTF?!
firmware update can fix this easily. cmon sony. please? :D
Trev @ Oct 10th 2008 2:50PM
It does this if you turn on the Remote Play wakeup feature.
Mr. Cantu @ Oct 10th 2008 3:59PM
@SecretAgentHam -
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Ofcourse it would mean they couldn't make money selling this.
B3astofthe3ast @ Oct 10th 2008 9:34PM
Well, MS lets you charge it while the 360 is off, but you hafta buy the play n charge kit. Sony puts the rechargable battery in the sixaxis, but to charge them while in play you have to buy this. Thus, the universe is in balance.
Jacksons @ Oct 10th 2008 2:50PM
Er yeah, just get a hub.
Brent98 @ Oct 10th 2008 2:53PM
I use the USB ports on my DVR for my PS3 and xbox controllers, its always on.
Cheesecake Jones @ Oct 10th 2008 2:58PM
I use the USB ports on my Wii... When it's in WiiConnect24 mode, the USB ports are always on. Also, it feels kinda kinky mixing my Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo products all together. Yeah...
JayVe @ Oct 10th 2008 3:13PM
I do the same thing. The Wii's USB ports are really nice in that they provide power while the system is asleep.
hotsoup @ Oct 10th 2008 3:08PM
I sit next to my laptop when I'm playing by how my office is organized. I leave my controller plugged into my computer to charge.
John Z @ Oct 10th 2008 3:09PM
FYI: Japan and North America use the same plug connector, but-- and this is VERY IMPORTANT-- different voltages in SOME parts of Japan. If you're going to import this (though I can't see why anyone would want to import this specifically), or really any hardware from Japan, then pay very close attention to voltages both in your location and on the device you're buying.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 10th 2008 3:10PM
who said our usb ports are full anyway?
if anything i want a longer usb charge cable so i can actually stay on the couch when i need to charge my ps3 controller and not drop to the floor within a 5 foot range of my 50inch tv.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 10th 2008 3:24PM
i want more exclusive ps3 game announcements..
not another sony accessory announcement...
geez...keypads, headsets, usb chargers is there anything sony is announcing anything that i actually need or want??
god they take a slow crawling pace when it comes to releasing games...
SCE is not really making many games anymore or what?
not at the pace of MS game studios.

$1.70 for a 15 footer, $1.19 for a 10 footer.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 10th 2008 3:40PM
erdie- thanks that is cheap..
if only shipping was cheaper than making the product...
lol.
great solution...
j.howlett @ Oct 10th 2008 3:21PM
you could just use a hub, but if people buy it from sony just for branding or lack of knowledge about cheaper alternatives, i see nothing wrong with them getting money.
Kevin @ Oct 10th 2008 3:36PM
Woo! I like this thing!
http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=USB_Hubs&product=2608258
Uses 1 port and don't need to get that fourth mini-A cable.
tmmoore_nc @ Oct 10th 2008 3:50PM
So does it come with a USB cord for other controllers? It's a nice idea, but I can't help but feel that it should be packed-in with every PS3.
Drew @ Oct 10th 2008 4:03PM
SIXAXIS, as a plural, is pronounced "six-axe-ees."
adamantypants @ Oct 10th 2008 4:48PM
I have one of these next to my PS3. I call it a "Wii".
Teh Lup @ Oct 10th 2008 6:07PM
Even though its not needed, and can be substituted for something of much less cost, people will eat this up cause it says Sony.
neko to kuruma @ Oct 10th 2008 10:40PM
I just bought a 4 USB hub for $2. I'm good, thanks anyway you moneygrubbers caring company.
neko to kuruma @ Oct 10th 2008 10:42PM
"Moneygrubbers" was supposed to have been stricken through. Oh well.
Jon D @ Oct 10th 2008 10:57PM
I see the keypad and this little whachamacallit will be the accessories to own this year.
