Couldn't you just use one of the regular universal USB charger that are already available?

Yes, you can. I bought an adapter at Wal-Mart for $11 dollars last year that meets all my USB charging needs.

I think it's pretty cool. The PS3 ports don't charge when the system's off, so if your TV is a normal distance from your couch you basically have 3 options when the controller goes dead: 1) play on the floor hunched in front of your TV using that horribly short included cable for a few hours, 2) plug the controller into a PC or something else with active USB ports (during which time you can't turn off the PC or use the controller), or 3) buy a longer cable. I went with option 3, personally, but this would have been handy before that. You could just plug into this adapter, which is always on, and leave it.

Mind you, it's not cool enough that I'd actually buy it, but if it had been included with the system it would have been a very handy bonus.

Or you could just buy some generic one with four USB ports for $5.

It does this if you turn on the Remote Play wakeup feature.

@SecretAgentHam -

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Ofcourse it would mean they couldn't make money selling this.

Well, MS lets you charge it while the 360 is off, but you hafta buy the play n charge kit. Sony puts the rechargable battery in the sixaxis, but to charge them while in play you have to buy this. Thus, the universe is in balance.

I use the USB ports on my Wii... When it's in WiiConnect24 mode, the USB ports are always on. Also, it feels kinda kinky mixing my Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo products all together. Yeah...

I do the same thing. The Wii's USB ports are really nice in that they provide power while the system is asleep.

I sit next to my laptop when I'm playing by how my office is organized. I leave my controller plugged into my computer to charge.

FYI: Japan and North America use the same plug connector, but-- and this is VERY IMPORTANT-- different voltages in SOME parts of Japan. If you're going to import this (though I can't see why anyone would want to import this specifically), or really any hardware from Japan, then pay very close attention to voltages both in your location and on the device you're buying.

geez...keypads, headsets, usb chargers is there anything sony is announcing anything that i actually need or want??

god they take a slow crawling pace when it comes to releasing games...
SCE is not really making many games anymore or what?
not at the pace of MS game studios.

you could just use a hub, but if people buy it from sony just for branding or lack of knowledge about cheaper alternatives, i see nothing wrong with them getting money.

Woo! I like this thing!

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=USB_Hubs&product=2608258

Uses 1 port and don't need to get that fourth mini-A cable.

So does it come with a USB cord for other controllers? It's a nice idea, but I can't help but feel that it should be packed-in with every PS3.

Even though its not needed, and can be substituted for something of much less cost, people will eat this up cause it says Sony.
