Sony wants Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said in an interview with GI.biz that he'd like the Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan for the sake of pushing HD gaming. Yoshida would like to see the PS3 and Xbox 360 be more successful in Japan and getting consumers moving beyond the Wii's dated technology.

Yoshida even goes on to compliment Microsoft's NXE and the Avatars, expressing that he prefers it over the Miis. Although it appears that the Wii will continue to dominate globally, Yoshida believes consumer acceptance of "this generation of gaming" would benefit both Sony and Microsoft.

Does Nintendo's success really matter? They appeal to a different crowd and I'm not sure if their revenue stream actually changes the amount we accept and encourage HD, next-gen gaming.

It appears to me that most people who are serious gamers prefer the 360 or PS3 and the only households which really use their Wii regularly and enjoy it are those households which, otherwise, would have no console at all.

It could be said that in their cutesey, grandma-loving ways Nintendo is actually broadening the spectrum of people interested in gaming in general. It's quite possible the preppy girl who never would have looked twice at Gears of War could begin on Wii and then consider moving on to more mature games.

Well, my friend's girlfriend is pretty ditzy (hope she doesn't read this) and he's convinced her to play some Super Smash on his Wii. I never would have thought she'd even consider gaming. Since then she's installed FEAR on her computer just to try it because she says she loves horror movies and the game might be the same feeling.

I admit you're not going to convince every girl or every person out there to be into gaming, but a Wii is a great shoe in the door

I agree with Will.

While I got my ex-girlfriend hooked into more hardcore games with Halo 1 (don't ask me how, she had only played SPYRO before that!), ANY game is better than none.

My brother's girlfriend used to jokingly refer to video games as "the devil" because my brother would spend so much time playing them, but once she played Wii Sports and then later Carnival Games, she's opened up to playing more games with him in general.

She's a Guitar Hero addict now.

It's all about the baby steps for the non-gamers.

Tremulous is an open-source first person shooter that was originally a Quake 3 mod. It's Aliens vs Humans in gameplay -very very- similar to the Counterstrike mod, Natural Selection. (just in case you were wondering)

Nope I'm american but it's mixed here. Some places call it junior high but some just have middle school and high school (at least I think it's still mixed, haven't kept up on that since graduating a few years ago).

Yeah me highschool was 10th - 12th, however I believe most are 9th - 12th. And prior to HS it was indeed called middle school. We get all mavericky here in the US and do things weird.

Yeah, he's talking specifically about Japan, where Sony have sold more than twice as many PS3s as MS have sold 360s to date. He's saying HD gaming hasn't really caught on in Japan in a big way yet, while the Wii has. The more people there interested in HD gaming, the
better for both Sony and MS. That's the gist of it.

Ben Heckadorn is professional console and hardware modder who had done amazing things including turning consoles into functioning laptops. He usually posts surprisingly detailed instructions on how to copy his projects and for something small like that he probably did.

strange coming from a sony exec but i do like what his motives were behind the comment. he just wants the wii to not hold back the future of gaming hardware (i.e. HDD and HD graphics) he wants the gaming industry to move forward and not the other way. he's giving compliments to his enemy and wishes them well for in turn, next generation we will see even more! go Yoshi!

I would sympathize with the move only on one condition which will involve hiring hitmans (or ninjas) for Mario dev team in Nintendo.

Nintendo will not move on until they leave the SNES basement (or bunker) where they have locked themselves up.

I'm all for Wii fail (and hey! I own one) but problem is that neither PS3 nor Xbox360 offers anything new or compelling. I hate waggle, folks. But I hate it as much as I hate classical controller. Bring me normal FPS controller and HD graphics - and cheap games - then we can start talking.
