TGS 08: Bungie details Halo 3: Recon

- "It will be a standalone disc sold in stores in boxes next Fall. It's also going to include some multiplayer maps."
- "It is a first-person shooter still ... It's not a squad-based shooter."
- "As an ODST, compared to playing as in invulnerable Spartan, you are going to have to sort of pick and choose your encounters a little bit differently."
- "It is going to very much feel like Halo. Full feature parity."

They're not revealing much in the way of story, but Smith gave us a short primer: You play a lone ODST soldier in the now Covenant-occupied city of New Mombasa. The story begins just after the Prophet of Regret disappears through a Slipspace portal en route to Delta Halo, with Master Chief & Friends in hot pursuit. The portal's closure destroys the city of New Mombasa and then, enter stage up: your character. When asked if the mysterious "superintendent" spotted in all the teases leading up to the game's announcement would play a sort of Cortana-esque role and serve as a guide (note the messages displayed on the screens at the end of the below trailer), Jerrard told us "I think your observations seem pretty spot on. It certainly seems like there's a guiding hand of some sort there."
While Jerrard is quick to point out that Recon is a fully featured campaign experience, it's tough to hold it up against Halo 3, a project that required the whole of Bungie's development team over a three-year period. "This is definitely a subset of [Halo 3]," Jerrard explains. "I think this is going to be a good value and a lot of content but we're not viewing this as sort of a full game release in the sense of Halo 3." When asked about the potential future pricing of the "expansion pack" Jerrard said it was too early to say for sure, but that they were leaning towards something a little more "value-oriented."
Though Recon shares the Halo 3 engine, with all new assets – think new textures and models for the new, darker urban environment – the team at Bungie would have been hard-pressed to cram the entire experience into a downloadable content wrapper (although they certainly would have an easier time explaining the product that way). "This is going to be a pretty huge file. The amount of content alone is probably bigger than anything that's ever been released as a DLC." On the other hand, the standalone model gives the team at Bungie another 1000 Achievement Points to distribute, sure to please the hardcore Halo fan.
If this all sounds straight up your alley, don't get too excited: This is "definitely not a new franchise" they say. It's "an exclamation point" on the end of the Halo trilogy while the rest of the team is hard at work on something that is, it would seem, not a part of the Halo trilogy.

Good to here that this wasn't all they were working on.

this looks promisingly and a great way to extend the Halo franchise, cant wait!
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 10th 2008 1:00AM
The concept sounds pretty interesting. This game, along with a more stable hardware spec. might be enough incentive to buy another Xbox
Yuccadude @ Oct 10th 2008 1:02AM
This looks like a mashup of CoD 4 and Halo, which I fully endorse if it lets you use silenced weapons to take out unsuspecting grunts. I always hated trying to sneak-melee, so a silencer would be awesome...
elmersglue @ Oct 10th 2008 1:03AM
strange, seems like they're trying to downplay it as much as possible. Seems like they learned their lesson in hyping their products up to ridiculous levels to the point where people expect perfection. Maybe this way it'll actually end up being better than people expect versus being a disappointment the way halo 2 and 3 were (although i still think halo 3 was a pretty good game, just not groundbreaking the way it should've been on a nextgen console).
MN Guy @ Oct 10th 2008 9:11AM
Some people thought they were both pretty good. Halo 3 and Halo 2 are the most played games on their respective consoles. Halo 3 is only my second favorite FPS on 360 but it surely didn't disappoint me. Then again, I didn't expect the greatest game of all time. Just expected a solid shooter with a lot to do in it.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 10th 2008 9:27AM
Or you know, you could have never bought the hype to begin with. That's what I did, and that's why I enjoy the halo series.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 10:10AM
Personally I thought Halo 2 was perfect....YEAH I SAID IT....I knw the ending left something to be desired but...The MP more than made up for any gripe I had with that campain at all.....10/10 and I'll take that to the grave with me....Best game for the Xbox(I know nobody agrees with me but I dont care)....Now Halo 3 I thought was almost perfect....But Halo 2 did everything Halo 3 did already so H3 seemed more like it was just trying to really balance the MP and end this damn trilogy.
Misfit Toy @ Oct 10th 2008 10:37AM
Halo 2 was good. It had a good story curve going...which kind of got dropped on Halo 3. But I can get over it. What I can't get over is the voice change to the Prophet of Truth. His voice was WAY better in Halo 2.
Ghostbuddy @ Oct 10th 2008 1:19AM
Im still confused about the multiplayer. Because some statements by Bungie, and some statements by Microsoft seem to be contradicting each other.
Is the multiplayer seperate from the original Halo 3? Or does the game just come with maps for Halo 3. If its the former, will the maps from the original Halo 3 be compatible with it?
By the way, don't try and anwser my question. No one here knows for sure.
But I would like some one, some where, at some point to get Bungie to clarify.
Either way, looking forward to this game.
Chris @ Oct 10th 2008 9:39AM
It's possible that Recon will work with this overhaul of the multiplayer experience that they've been talking about. Maybe they're not talking about Recon multiplayer in order to not give anything away about the multiplayer revamp.
Mitsuo @ Oct 10th 2008 1:24AM
Halo 1 = halo 2 = halo 3. I'm willing to bet recon = halo 3. Just the same old broken game system with different maps. Same weapons and everything. Definitely not gonna buy it.
ronald.raygun @ Oct 10th 2008 1:33AM
i would like to replace your = signs with > signs.
i wonder if there will be vehicles. i think they should've made it fps and in the style of brothers in arms or that star wars recon game that was great.
Lone Starr @ Oct 10th 2008 1:44AM
"Same weapons and everything."
Have we played the same Halo trilogy?
vocaine82nd @ Oct 10th 2008 1:47AM
glade to hear that its going to be an fps.i thank its awsome there showing another point of view of the war.
Dave @ Oct 10th 2008 1:50AM
Nice that they cleared up a few common questions. I'm intrigued what they mean about picking encounters differently (hinting at stealth again?).

2 games down, 2 to go between the Bungie/Microsoft Contract, amirite?
Jdrm03 @ Oct 10th 2008 2:58AM
No you are not right. Bungie and Microsoft have a partnership where, although Bungie is independent from Microsoft, Bungie still develops exclusively for Microsoft. Sorta say like Insomniac develops exclusively for Sony, even though being an independent company.
SHAZAM! @ Oct 10th 2008 7:31AM
I don't think the contract is an exclusive developer relationship deal. I am sure that when it first happened, it was a Right to First refusal thing. So MS get to see any game Bungie is developing and say Yay/Nay to publishing it before it is shown to anyone else.
As far as I know, this stands indefinitely (sp?), but Bungie aren't tied down too tightly with their contract.
Ratfoot @ Oct 10th 2008 1:54AM
"small agile team made up of a bunch of elders who started the Halo: Combat Evolved franchise some seven years ago"
Hm maybe this is the project that Jason Jones is working on.
wiredknight @ Oct 10th 2008 2:49AM
This raises a couple more questions for me.
I see that there's co-op, but will there be en option for ODST-only multiplayer? Or is it just so people don't have to switch discs to go back to Halo 3's multiplayer?
When you say "lone," does that mean he's the only one left in the city, or will he join up with other surviving troopers?
SpikeDelight @ Oct 10th 2008 3:08AM
I hope they make this game more like a Rainbow Six: Vegas, Brothers in Arms HH or Call of Duty 4, where everything's not all neat and tidy like it is through MC's helmet and you have to get down and dirty, fighting for every inch. CoD4 in the Halo Universe would be amazing!
jc @ Oct 10th 2008 4:37AM
Lame, I was hoping for a different engine than the Jaggerific engine H3 uses. No sale for me if it looks the same. I thought technoligy is supposed to move forward?
The vote button is down to the right---> go ahead vote me down..
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 7:29AM
I hope they optimise the engine to remove or reduce the jaggies...Thats one thing that I'm not a fan of in the game.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 10:14AM
Well you are kinda right why would we vote you down....The jaggies are irritating as shit...And Im a Halo Fan Boy....It looks bad on my HD tv....
jc @ Oct 10th 2008 4:40AM
Ooops! "Technology"
Kye - Me_DF @ Oct 10th 2008 4:53AM
I dunno about this yet.
I'm all for Halo stuff, but I'm more of a Master Chief fan than a Halo fan.
Omar Al-Qudsi @ Oct 10th 2008 5:43AM
no news on halo 3 pc???
snarfoogle @ Oct 10th 2008 6:11AM
i can haz recon?!
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 6:30AM
If there's still heaps of enemies and the choose your style of approach like in Halo 3 but has the stealth/choose your battles factor, then this'll be great.
I'm confused about how long it'll be... It'll add hours, but I hope its not like 3.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 10th 2008 6:46AM
Oh no, :( I was hoping it would be squad based
*Heart drops*
I'm not into the one man army thing, so thats a dissopointment, hopefully there is more of a stealth element to it at least.
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 7:27AM
Get 3 dumb friends and play 4 player coop and command them around ;p
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 10th 2008 7:35AM
Lol, thats not quite the same, cos see if they are dumb, then they'll go and get themselves killed when I need em, lmao
Sparkstalker @ Oct 10th 2008 8:53AM
So...it would be just like the squad AI in most games...:)
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 10th 2008 9:00AM
Spose, lol, guess it just depended on how smart Bungie made the AI in the squad, and....well, based on past Halo experiences, I doubt that would go down too well :S
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 9:19AM
If only you could save clips in single player. I'd send you replays of marines running me over in warthogs, blowing me up with grenades and carrying on with their lives, feeling no remorse. Yet if a lil grunt kills me they're like "noooooo".
Frustratingly hilarious =p I'm glad its not squad based.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 10th 2008 11:12AM
Roflmao, I've had my AI experiences, don't you worry, lol, thats the thing with Halo, if the human race is that stupid to get owned, its no wonder MC is a hero, lmao.
On legendary, AI marines have no purpose, they just run in and get instant killed.
t_m @ Oct 10th 2008 9:03AM
Why do they keep including a singleplayer in the Halo franchise. Its not like anyone buys it for the singleplayer anyway. (or i hope not, as its always been terrible).
Why don't they just make it purely a multiplayer franchise like Battlefield or UT?
That guy @ Oct 10th 2008 9:21AM
I like the single player =( The encounters are always fun for me and my friends.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 10:18AM
Wow u definitely speak for yourself...I know Im not L33T for what I'm about to say but...I ExMcCloud had never played an FPS in my life until I played...Halo:CE....It opened my eyes to other shooters like Half Life, and UT...I thought the campain was magnificent..
P.S. Im 20 I was way to young to comprehend Golden Eye and Perfect Dark.....Thats when I was still an athlete and I went outside...Pfft....Outside...lolz
t_m @ Oct 10th 2008 11:17AM
It just kind of seems like a waste of resources... hardly anyone plays it for the singleplayer anyway. Just think what they could do if they purely focused on the multiplayer.
(of course, everyone's opinons differ. But i thought Halo:CE's singleplayer was horrendous. I can think of dozens of other (mediocre) FPS games with better told plots, better pacing, better level design, etc.. I can't remember a review that said Halo's singleplayer was particularly great either. (though of course the cool weapons and controls transfer across well from the multiplayer)).
Metal Geario 360 @ Oct 10th 2008 9:11AM
{Off topic}
Im still waiting for a fps, or 3rd person shooter that is "Co-Op", and has the immersion of lets say,
Half Life (The original), puzzles and all.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 10th 2008 9:29AM
Then go play more Half-life.
Metal Geario 360 @ Oct 10th 2008 10:06AM
Hope you were joking for if that was to be a quick snipe. Then try again...
Other than that Half Life is not "CoOp",but thanks for "teh advice"
