TGS 08: Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer impressions

The trailer kicks things off with the same line of text we've seen dozens of times before: "This is a fantasy based on reality." The scene moves to the prince's luxury sedan speeding through a tunnel. He's listening to the news on the car radio. The vehicle exits the tunnel and the camera pans up to see the moonlit sky with two giant airships hovering in the distance. Somewhere in between this, we get a reintroduction to the Shakespearean quote that's been used since the debut trailer. At this point, things shift and the new stuff come in.
We see the prince character wearing a casual, all black suit. This is rendered with the in-game engine, and the graphics look as smooth and appealing as the main FFXIII title. He climbs marble stairs up to a loft-like art gallery. There he meets the blonde woman revealed previously wearing a black dress and a small white top. This time she's seen in a white cocktail dress. the two are talking but through Japanese subtitles as there doesn't appear to be any voice work done yet – or, Square Enix purposely took it out for some reason.
The two characters continue to talk in the art gallery. There's an Amano-styled painting hanging on the floor behind the female character. They appear to be having a friendly chat. It's easy to assume that these two could be lovers; there's no doubt they're quite close to one another.
What follows shortly after is a collection of pre-rendered cut scenes taking us through several familiar scenarios from last year: a black car drives down a desert road reaching a body of water where the road ends and a ruined bridge sinking into the sea begins. We also see a council of aged men in black suits seated around a rectangular table. These guys are probably from the other countries that are at war with the prince's city-state and are attempting to pilfer his crystal. A hooded man in a white cloak confronts the prince with magical power in a split second. It's still difficult to get a good look at his face just like in the last trailer he appeared in.
Some other relatively new footage involves the prince's three friends. We've seen these guys in screenshots on Japanese websites and images in Japanese magazines for several months now. Anyway, you'll see the man with the short wavy blond hair, the dude with the glasses, and the chummy fellow with dark hair and a beard just hanging out. There's one scene in particular where all four men are out on a bridge surveying a large building that lies in the background.
The trailer then switches back to the girl and prince talking in the art gallery. Again, no voice acting – just Japanese subtitles. It's here where we're taken back to footage from last year's show; it's the scene where those two "friends" see each other in the street and are about to reluctantly engage one another in battle. We wonder what happened to turn them into enemies.
One thing we noticed about the trailer was that there was hardly any cut scenes involving fighting – and, as you can guess, that definitely means no in-game battle footage. The trailer seemed to be more of an introduction to the game's main and supporting cast rather than taking us through any sort of gameplay reveal. Anyway, that's it for Versus XIII. With it, the Closed Theater ends; however, for us, we've only begun with our impressions on the entire shebang. We'll have a post up soon on the full Square Enix Closed Theater showing, so watch out for that.

So much buzz about a game that we only get to see a cut scene for once a year.

Except we don't even get to see it.

How old are you?
Fuck, I'll just skip that one and go straight to the REAL question - why aren't you asleep? Isn't it waaaay past your bedtime?
Even if it wasn't an exclusive, we as gamers would only benefit from it being a multiplatform titles - the only people who protest something like that are blind fanboys. Uh, and, wouldn't the fact that the economy is no good make it a smarter move to release it on both consoles, you know, expand the userbase and make more moolah?

Of course 360 owners when gaining a former PS3 exclusive will say its great that more gamers can enjoy that game, everyone should be happy except for the bitter, pathetic PS3 fanboys right?
But I wonder how 360 owners would feel if most of their former exclusives came to the PS3? They'll never know how that feels, their losing much fewer exclusives to the PS3 than vice versa.
Its not surprising given the larger userbase of the Xbox 360 and many PS2 owners have migrated to it rather than the PS3.
Sony needs to forget about securing third party exclusives (they already have) and focus on making great 1st party games to set their console apart from the 360.
I think this generation has had the most multiplatform games by far no?
SexyKittyKat2U @ Oct 10th 2008 8:16AM
You're right about one thing.
360 will never feel that bitterness and pain that you sony fanboys are feeling because we have a bigger fanbase. Our console is the BEST console for gaming.
And the ps3 SUCKS ASS.
And sony fanboys like yourself are just arrogant pricks and assholes who think they're better than the rest of the fanboys on this site. If things were reversed and sony were on top you wouldn't be bitching. You'be strutting around like you own the place.
Anyways this is karma...pure and simple.
Enjoy 3rd Place this generation.
And I doubt this game will go multiplat so you can enjoy it.
Meanwhile I'll enjoy the MAIN FFXIII title whenever it comes out.
But hey you've got the sidebar FFXIII which looks intriguing and you've got God of War.
Also that Gears of War wannabe Quantum w/e actually looks intriguing to me. But then again sony is always imitating other companies.

I dont know why Kitty went off, but if you read what he said hes not bashing Xbox, hes just stating the obvious.
Companies really need to put theyre best foot forward. In terms of game design/ innovation for "games". So we can all benefit. Ease off on the latest controller/ system app's.
silverwolf761 @ Oct 10th 2008 9:34AM
@SexyKittyKat2U:
As opposed to you thinking that you're better than PS3 fan(boy)s, but that, for some reason, is so much more acceptable.
The best console for gaming? Debatable at best.

"But I wonder how 360 owners would feel if most of their former exclusives came to the PS3? They'll never know how that feels"
Erm, Bioshock anyone? If I recall, most people that lean on the 360 side of things were pretty happy for PS3 only owners getting a chance to play that game.
el serpiente @ Oct 10th 2008 11:17AM
Does PrematureAss keep getting banned or does he just change his name every month?
cc123 @ Oct 10th 2008 12:20PM
My bet is that when people learn his new name they automatically white out his posts so he changes names often.
Also "Sexy Kitty Kat"? Are you fucking kidding me?
The one person on Joystiq that I think legitimately has mental problems. I doubt he even plays games, probably just comes here to argue.
Stuka @ Oct 12th 2008 1:43PM
Bioshock will probably go down as one of the great games of this generation and it's a 'lost exclusive' for the 360. How do I, as a 360 owner, feel about that? Mostly apathetic but also a little happy that more people will enjoy and buy a great game that deserves as much success it can get and as much clout as it can give Ken Levine and Irrational (I refuse to recognize the new name).
Dan CiTi @ Nov 17th 2008 11:56AM
Ugh. PS3 fanboys should rejoice so now they can get the game for free on 360. Like they do on the DS, PSP, or maybe Wii. ;)
Honestly, the reason games are being ported to 360 is because the US has a bigger install base for 360 and because it is on par with the PS3; And vice versa.
There are still a decent amount of exclusives for each system. Some not worth keeping, i.e. Haze, Too Human, etc.
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 10th 2008 1:49AM

fraxyl @ Oct 10th 2008 1:52AM
I hope that just because it's going to the 360 they won't say "Well crap, all this content on the blu-ray won't fit onto 2 DVDs so we'll have to cut it from both so 360 owners don't cry." ala Rage. :/
TFoK (Naked Peach Defense Force) @ Oct 10th 2008 1:53AM
I'd think this kind o' trolling was funny too, except I've seen waaaaay too much of it around the forums I visit in the last few months. We're living in the tech age; all the little kiddies are finding their way online and causing the average IQ of internet users to drop like a rock.
fraxyl @ Oct 10th 2008 1:53AM
I thought this was the FFXIII and not the Versus thread, versus is supposedly exclusive, although exclusivity is kind of a byword nowdays.
Chin-Poh @ Oct 10th 2008 1:56AM
I'm starting to believe in exclusivity, especially with the PS3 less and less everyday. Look at how the Tekken, Final Fantasy, Dynasty Warriors, Devil May Cry and other series that have been exclusives to the PS1/PS2 make the jump to 360.
I really wouldn't be surprised if this also made its way to the 360 despite it being "exclusive". Look at what happened to Tekken 6. Money and the larger install base of the 360 talks. : /
Pointz @ Oct 10th 2008 1:56AM

I'm looking forward to this more the XIII. Just because this is going into a different direction. A little more dark and violent as well as some different stuff yet to be confirmed. Remember how it was for 1-6, it had the same formula to a certain degree that varied from game to game but it was all pretty much standard. Then 7 comes along and changed everything. Veterans enjoyed it while newcomers just creamed their pants.
In terms of Exclusivity, if it goes to 360 then whatever. Buy it for whatever system you like and enjoy yourself instead of trolling the forums calling Square-Enix a bunch of traitors and blah blah blah. Fanboyism is probably the most annoying thing around when it comes to the Gaming Community. Its worse when certain developers just had to the fire. Gabe Newell is a prime example of this.
I don't know if this is accurate or not but word has been buzzing around that Star Ocean 4 is going multiplat. I haven't seen many complaints for 360 owners but I suppose that's because 360 hasn't lost as many exclusives as PS3. I could be wrong about that. Maybe 360 owners just have a more level head that PS3 owners. Who knows?
XenoSilvano @ Oct 10th 2008 5:11AM
Isn't that Ironic the person who saved the company from going under enviable sent it into bankruptcy.
Personally I feel as though the movie Final Fantasy The Spirits Within was little under appreciated.
Enix is the only reason Square even exists.
Matthew @ Oct 10th 2008 5:32AM
I'm tired of people moaning about some exclusive game going to some other console too. It might not be great for the company who owns the console that looses it, but gamers overall it's a good thing. It means more people will get to play it.
The I'm an console X fanboy so I hate console Z, it's so ridiculously irrational. The lengths people go to to feel like they belong is stupid. Each console has good games and bad games. Real gamers love games. Not platforms. pah!

Metal Geario 360 @ Oct 10th 2008 8:34AM
Also Matthew you are right.
I see your "view" and agree, honestly, but when it comes to things like Joystiq. What would we do if we didnt have people like >Lawrence< ? If we all were civil during the "console war"?
There would be no one to vote down...
ps. I take something back,"Lawrence" is a waste of space, but i do like when people have it out sometimes because i learn new things from the debate/argument.
Megadanxzero @ Oct 10th 2008 5:54AM
'this year's trailer shows off a bit of in-game footage of Versus XIII for the first time'
Wow, I actually thought you meant there was proper gameplay footage in a trailer for a Square Enix game. Silly me XD
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 10th 2008 6:51AM
Is 360 the Jedi and PS3 the sith? Whats with all the dark versions of things going to PS3 and the light versions going to 360, lmao
AwesomeTown @ Oct 10th 2008 7:18AM
Guys, just down vote and move on. The trolls are dangerous when fed.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Oct 10th 2008 7:43AM
That was always best about FF games - trailers and promo video. Sadly, on game enjoyment factor, they always being pretty mediocre.
As somebody who pretty much never watches cut scenes/follows the story in games, to me most FFs were pretty boring - mostly due to overly long pauses between action moments (battles or whatever).
edhc44 @ Oct 10th 2008 10:38AM
The whole point of a FF game, or any JRPG for that matter is the plot, how can you find a game enjoyable if you skip the best part?
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Oct 10th 2008 11:06AM
@edhc44: /me idiot! how I couldn't guess before that the part of game which isn't game is the best part of the game!!!
But I have to confess, that as it turned out, I do not like JRPGs - they are too sadistic for me. As I am not masochist, I can't enjoy them.
Story-wise, I like two types of games: (1) story is deeply embedded that its flow affects quests/characters/etc and (2) story is optional bonus to glue quests together.
FFs, I have seen before, force story on you (not optional non-bonus) but the main game action (e.g. battles) has no relation whatsoever to the story. FFs generally have linear story and side quests are only bonus not affecting (nor highlighting some part of) the story.
Mr Khan @ Oct 10th 2008 8:39AM

Im wring with my ps3 so ill make it short. FYI versus has better value than XIII because its being developed by SE's better devs. & they are making XII on PS3 1st then toning it down for 360. remember to check your facts.
Aremis @ Oct 11th 2008 4:25PM
Well, I have both systems, but I will probably buy XIII and XIII Versus on PS3 even if they both go multiplat simply because XIII Agito is on the PSP and won't go Multiplat since MS doesn't have a handheld system as of yet. Also, Star Ocean 4 was never announced as an exclusive, they just gave it a different name on 360 than PS3. Finally, to the person that mentioned Bioshock going Multiplat, I think what most people are referring to is that, for most PS owners, FF has been one of the premier games on the consoles, kinda like the Halo series on Xbox. Since 360 owners haven't felt that kind of exclusive loss like PS3 owners have, they don't really understand how those users feel. Personally, I'm not a fanboy, I own all 3 systems because each have features I like and games I like, but for those that have been loyal to Sony or MS a loss of a long time "Exclusive" title is a big deal for them
Marc Jef @ Oct 10th 2008 7:47PM
Make sure after they announced that this GAME will b coming to another system is that they've finished developing the game on the PS3. It matter co'z many SONY suffers from third party game for limiting their resources so that it will be fitted on a single dvd and not maximizing it's potential on a larger DISC.
