CheapAssGamer lights the way to one of the most glorious annual (semi-annual?) events starting this Sunday: Toys "R" Us' Buy 2 get 1 free sale. For thrifty shoppers who like their games new -- not gutted "new" -- it's the event of the year.
Per standard ops., the rules work that you pick three games either online or in the store and get the least expensive one for free. CAG has a full FAQ on the gritty details, with some slick ways of making the system work for you if you want a game coming out later this year. CAG also notes that Sunday and Monday there's a 30% off deal on Wii accessories. Wiimotes and nunchuks don't count, but Wii Point cards do. Happy shopping.
[Thanks Tim]

"Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value. The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned."

i used to work at TRU, and they won't let you do it. they'll either make you return all 3 games or keep all 3. people try that all the time.

Haha. They're going to accept it and give you nothing back because that copy that you are returning has a value of 0.00. So rather than getting it for $45 each, you'll be paying full price. LoL

Let me just say that if you were to buy three games at the TRU I worked at, then returned the two you actually paid for, no one would ask you to return the third one because the register doesn't prompt you for it, nor does the receipt anywhere state that if you return the two non-free ones you have to return the free one.
To whoever said that because the way it's rung up you can not return the free, they are right in some respects...you can actually return things for $0.00 and it run through the system. And on top of that if you explain to them that the one you got for free was not actually the one you wanted, they will allow you to exchange it.
Again, I don't know if this is how it is at all TRU but this is how I ran ours. (The managers just nod and agree)

You're doing it all wrong: Buy two copies of Dead Space, and a third copy of something else that has a pretty solid resale value on eBay. God only knows what that would be, but theoretically something could fit the bill. Sell that game on ebay, thus recouping a percentage of your investment. Granted, the time, effort, and energy involved in doing all of that is totally not worth the $11 or so you'll end up making after you pay ebay, Paypal, shipping, and Guido the Killer Pimp. Just get your three damn games and be happy.

How long will this deal run?
And I have no idea what 3 games to use it on. Most of the games I'm interested in aren't coming out until a few weeks later.
I doubt this deal will still be around.
PS Does anyone know what Best Buy's current employee discount is?

As mentioned in the joystiq article, CAG details how to make this work on future releases (within 45 days of purchase).
Just make sure the game you want to keep is the "free" one when the ring it up. The other two you'll be able to exchange within 45 days so long as you have the receipt and haven't opened them.
At least, that's how it's worked for this deal in the past.

So whatever the cost of the item or game I just multiply by 1.05 and that will be the price I would have to pay right?
Sweet. Thanks guys.

I'm gonna go ahead and get 3 $60 games, one being SOCOM which I will keep. Then I will keep the other two in the plastic, and take them back a couple weeks later and get Resistance 2 and Mirror's edge.

SO does anyone think the following will work?
1. Placeholder game (Little Big Planet
2. Placeholder game (Bioshock)
3. SOCOM Bundle (free)
4. Placeholder (Fallout 3)
5. Placeholder (Mirror's Edge)
6. Not sure yet (Free)
If I exchange the games that have value for games that will be out next week, you think Toys or Us will give me shit?

Well, it's been 6 hours so by now you've probably found out what it means. But if not, it stands for "Your Mileage May Vary," meaning that some TRUs may let you exchange the games, others will give you shit. Y'know, results may vary.

This used to be a great sale....but now that everyone knows about it....unless you can get over there immediately....most of the best titles are gone by monday.
Not to mention that TRU has caught on about most of tricks people try to use to abuse the deal.

So what accessories (other than Wii points) are discounted? Does the WiiFit balance board count as an accessory? MarioKart wheels?

so its really buy 3 games for $ 45 each if they are new games. if 1 of the games is less than $ 60, its not much of a deal at all.
there is really no FREE involved. thats the gimmick.
this is a cool deal if there were 3 new games i wanted.
hmmm i bet circiut city will price match this promotion as they have matched every promotion for me in the past with proof of the ad.

Well supposedly the POS system registers the first two games at full price and the third at $0.00. So thats free right?
Unfortunately it can bite you back. If you were to take the third game back you couldn't get a refund since the receipt will show that its valued at $0.00.

jack- true. but really FREE would mean walking into toys r us and walking out with something FREE without a required PURCHASE.
"purchase" never = FREE
purchasing 3 games for $ 120 is not receiving anything for free, that is just a sales gimmick used to attract customers.
its a sale, nothing more. it is a good sale though.

OHH thats how you meant it. Thats almost(or is it?) philosophical status right there. In that case, yeah, I agree. Nothing in the universe is free.
