WipEout HD patched for popular players, may require save deletion
Sony has deployed a patch for WipEout HD onto European servers, and presumably will do the same later today in North America, fixing freezing issues that have affected players with over 50 friends. Admittedly, we were rather fond of the "glitch," though it's probably time we let go of our petty grudge against the in-crowd of our adolescent years (note to self: avoid awkward confrontations at next high school reunion politely decline the Jägerbombs). Still, there's some glee to be gleaned from the update. According to the description:
"If at any time you have had over 50 users in your friends list whilst playing Wipeout it is possible that your saved data has become corrupted. If this situation applies to you, we strongly recommend once this update has installed you quit the game and delete your saved data using the saved data utility in the XMB, then relaunch the game to create a new profile. Deleting your Saved Data will not affect your collected trophies or online records, but will reset your campaign mode progress, team loyalties, and in-game settings." [Emphasis ours.]
See? Popularity doesn't always get you ahead in life.
Update: The patch has been released in North America.

Weird, I have well over 50 friends on my friends list, and the game played just fine both online and off. Maybe the issue only occurred if over 50 friends were online? I know I've never seen that many people online at the same time on my list.

Some people were reporting that the line was closer to 60-ish, but other people did have the problem with numbers in the 50's. 50 may actually be a safe bet in this case.

Phew, good thing I only have 5 friends on PSN. Btw, this game is amazing and it's hard to stop playing! Zone mode especially (but any other mode works too) + trance = awesome.

I personally didn't enjoy the game. I'm glad I bought it and contributed to the developers, but I'm not just not liking it. To be fair, I never really played the wipeout series, I was always the F-Zero X kinda guy.

So in short you only need to delete the game save if you were previouly getting freezes, everyone else need not delete, and just apply the patch.
Hardly earth shattering, nowhere near as bad as RockBand 2 360 problems right now...
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 10th 2008 4:47PM
wow digdug you proved that you can read an article, thanks for repeating what they said.
and where did the 360 or rock band come into play in a ps3 game conversation???
oh yeah i forgot you are the person that feels the EU would have no problems defeating the axis powers in WW2 without the help of the west...
i bet you also felt the US economy was in shambles and the world would conquer... well it looks like most of the worlds economies are having the same troubles if not larger losses. why do those companies invest their money in the US economy?
because it is safer and they will get a larger ROI in the end...

Somebody's got a little sand in their vagina today.

LOL, and you seem to forget that the US got involved in WWII in the last 5minutes.
The Russians are what won WWII, sorry if it does not agree with what you seem to remember from the movies.

Jägerbombs? What are you guys talking about? Stop it.
For a sec I thought that meant 50 players on one track, how awesome- erm... laggy would that be?
Zak Canard @ Oct 10th 2008 6:07PM
A Jägerbomb is a shot glass of Jägermeister dropped into a glass of Red Bull. Very nice but very bad for your head the morning after.
Arkanaloth @ Oct 10th 2008 4:58PM
ouch... but I don't play online so my friends list is comprised of IRL friends that have PS3's... so it's like... 5 people. Think I'm safe ^_^
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 10th 2008 6:10PM
Serves them right for having so many friends! Anyone should be happy with 2, one for daytime, one for night.
Incidentally, this game is the shit. THE SHIT!
For £12 i feel like i've stolen from Sony Liverpool.
Lionbacker @ Oct 10th 2008 7:01PM
God damn...
The morning after I had to delete 50 guys from my friends list.

The wipeout patch is live in the US now
