Movie sharing not part of NXE launch
Despite originally listing the ability to share Netflix movie rentals among the New Xbox Experience's list of features, it looks like any cross-Xbox Live watch party we had planned for the fifth season of Hawaii Five-O will have to wait.
The movie sharing feature won't make the service's November 19 launch; however, it could conceivably be added in at a later date says Albert Penello, group marketing manager for the Xbox 360. Penello told MTV Multiplayer that such capabilities are "certainly the aspiration" which we're pretty sure is marketing manager for "we're working on it." It's not like there won't be plenty to take in once NXE is released though, for the time being, it looks like any DVD launch parties (even those for swank 70s cop shows!) will be single living room affairs. Sorry, Grandma!

Is it okay if I like penises?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 12th 2008 3:45PM
It depends...do you have one?
Wulile @ Oct 14th 2008 1:49AM
It's kinda hard to tell...
Crazd @ Oct 12th 2008 2:42PM
Screw you Microsoft. This is the one thing I was really looking forward to with the NXE.
brad77 @ Oct 12th 2008 11:38PM
Really?
Tiptup300 @ Oct 13th 2008 1:06AM
Seriously, Really!?
SilverFireshot @ Oct 13th 2008 9:21AM
Crazd is a PS3 fanboy.
I was looking forward to this feature though.
Strike Man @ Oct 14th 2008 12:50AM
I hope you remember this part:
"You must be an Xbox Live Gold subscriber as well as a Netflix subscriber to use the new Netflix service.
Similarly, anyone you share your movie with would also need to be an XBL and Netflix subscriber."
Is your friends list honestly comprised of XBL Gold and Netflix subscribers who all have a hankering to stream Wild Hogs and Adam-12 over the internet at the same time?
Crazd @ Oct 14th 2008 12:56AM
Actually, no, I wasn't aware that everyone had to be a Netflix subscriber to make use of the sharing feature. Since that's the case then I really could care less.
Fernando Rocker @ Oct 12th 2008 2:44PM
I want to take advantage of the Netflix service... I'm currently living in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Is a city in the border (I go to Laredo, Texas almost everyday... the international bridge is at 12 blocks from my home).
Problem is, I can't use Netflix because the service checks my ISP IP location, and Netflix can only be used in USA.
Can I use a VPN or a proxy server?
Jakka @ Oct 12th 2008 3:12PM
If you have a router, you can try putting the 360 in DMZ and other tricks like that. Other than that proxies should work.
Huey2k2 @ Oct 12th 2008 3:32PM
I wish Netflix was available outside the US too. I'd totally be getting a subscription when the NXE comes out if I could.
007craft @ Oct 12th 2008 4:16PM
tricks like DMZ? you have no idea what your talking about do you lol?
But yes you can get it working using a proxy server on your router. Thats not exactly something the average user can set up BTW.
Jakka @ Oct 12th 2008 4:47PM
Well, enabling DMZ on my router did appear to give me a random IP, but other than that, you are correct.
brad77 @ Oct 12th 2008 11:46PM
I'm afraid 007's right, Jakka. Putting your Xbox on the DMZ can be helpful for Xbox Live compatibility (keeps NAT to a minimum), but it doesn't do anything to change your ISP. In most cases, it just exposes your box directly to the 'net and keeps your firewall from getting in the way.
It still uses the same internet connection that your router is plugged into.

i would guess one hold up is the same that sony dropped watching movies in HOME, licences
Syn @ Oct 12th 2008 2:54PM
Except Sony has their own movie studio(s). Also, Sony and Google are in bed together so, I'm sure they could have a Youtube stream via your HOME TVs.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 12th 2008 4:47PM
Sony will figure something out but Youtube should not be an option who the HELL wants to have a Youtube party.....All you could do is watch Souljah Boy talk about Super Soaking these hoes and his infatuation with Clark Kents alter ego....sigh
Steve519 @ Oct 12th 2008 2:56PM
Where does it say that the Netflix Play Now feature wont work? if you read your source the writer is talking about a sharing service, one that he came up with, not the already announced Netflix video features.
Unless you have news that hasn't been announced, you're reading your source wrong as far as I can tell
SoulPatch @ Oct 12th 2008 3:09PM
I agree. The source is talking about something completely different. Don't jump to conclusions before you write an article. The article is clearly talking about sharing movies to different Xbox's NOT the entire Netflix feature. Read before you write.
SoulPatch @ Oct 12th 2008 3:11PM
It looks like I need to take my own advice. YOUR article clearly talks about the sharing feature, not the Netflix service. Wow, my bad. Man, I need to take anger management classes...
MarkHawk @ Oct 12th 2008 3:49PM
Damn, this was a feature I was using to convince my friends to buy a 360 this holiday season since most of them moved away once we all graduated from college.
Orenthol @ Oct 12th 2008 4:35PM
Something for future updates.. hmmm...
Want to make updates less frequent...
Sooo... we can expect this in Winter 2009?
Sam Zebian @ Oct 12th 2008 5:22PM
No big deal, guys.
Some of you are pissed at Microsoft, but I have a message for them:
Take your time, get it working right, and don't rush your product out the door, which can look worse than if you were to delay it.
That's all I wanted to say to MS.
Sorry guys (commenters, not MS employees), I wanted this feature too, but Microsoft and it's employees isn't (aren't?) god. There's a whole lot of work they have to do to get these types of features working, and it's not easy. So at least be happy with the features we're getting, the NXE is still awesome, isn't it?
ryan @ Oct 13th 2008 11:16AM
"Take your time, get it working right, and don't rush your product out the door, which can look worse than if you were to delay it."
it's funny you say that, they could have used that pep talk before launching the 360.
Anthony @ Oct 12th 2008 7:17PM
I'll take the buggy feature over no feature any day of the week. It's not like releasing a alpha build would change when they got a gold version out. It might speed things up on the other hand though.
Headgamer @ Oct 21st 2008 1:23PM
So are they saying the Netflix streaming service won't be available at all, or just not available to share with other users? If it is just the feature of sharing the movie together then I am cool with that because I wouldn't be doing that much. If it is the entire Netflix streaming feature altogether, now THAT would make me mad.
