Maybe they're getting ready for Home?
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 13th 2008 9:21PM
It could very well be Sony gearing up for home.
The app is downloaded in a bunch of small parts, so their servers will get absolutely pounded when Home goes live. Adding servers or prioritizing servers now would be a good idea, especially since Japan will soon be getting a public Home beta.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 13th 2008 9:40PM
Then I'll say it once and I'll say it again Sony needs dedicated servers for all of PSN thats why MS is able to do these huge Software changes they have multiple Servers that are optimized specifically for XBL...Sony has something going on where its kind of like an Internet browser...Dedicated Servers equals more games supported, More game supported equals consoles bought...Consoles bought equals happy customers and Sony
Kspraydad @ Oct 13th 2008 9:51PM
Quick...which online service has experienced the most longest downtime in one stretch since launch.
Choices:
XBL
PSN
Wii
El Capitaine @ Oct 13th 2008 9:53PM
The Wii has an online service?
Kspraydad @ Oct 13th 2008 10:00PM
@El Capitane...Yah...I didn't know what the crap to call it either..
Replica23 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:09PM
It definitely could be. Firmware 2.5 is going to land early Thursday morning, and back in August or September (can't remember which) a posting by a Sony rep on the Home Beta forum suggested the public beta of Home would be available around the same time; going as far to speculate end of October.
Or they could just be upgraded their network to handle HD audio for the new official headset. Regardless I think they could have a chosen a better time of day to perform this kind of thing.
DustoMan @ Oct 13th 2008 10:10PM
No, nothing to do with Home. It's for the 2.5 firmware update which makes some changes to the Playstation Store and managing and creating PSN accounts.
Vidikron @ Oct 13th 2008 10:26PM
"Then I'll say it once and I'll say it again Sony needs dedicated servers for all of PSN thats why MS is able to do these huge Software changes they have multiple Servers that are optimized specifically for XBL"
Live shut down for maintenance just a few weeks ago and it was down for an entire day. I agree that Live is overall better, but it has nothing to do with the need to shut down for maintenance.
severian00 @ Oct 13th 2008 11:13PM
I have no problem with it being down, I have a problem with them not telling anyone about. At least when MS takes live down, you know about it at least a couple days early if not a week. Granted, there's not much to compain about since it's free.
Extinction @ Oct 14th 2008 8:02AM
PSN is the service that uses dedicated servers. Live uses peer to peer.
And silly joystiq, why would we nag for a refunbd for a service that 1) is free, 2) Is down for only 5 hours not days at a time like live
ExMcCloud @ Oct 14th 2008 8:11AM
If PSN uses dedicated servers why did they make a big deal about Warhawk being the first game to use PSN and have dedicated servers.....Thats why I thought Sony didnt use dedicated servers for all games....I'll take the "Guess I was wrong stance on this one" Thanx for clearing that up...
Honestly as far as the XBL crash it was very much expected seeing how Halo 3 had about 3 million new users hit XBL on the same day plus the other 3 million people who already had Live...lol....Thats a good problem to have
Envoy @ Oct 13th 2008 9:07PM

Maintenance the day socom comes out, brilliant!!!
Megazine @ Oct 14th 2008 5:27PM
lol....but for real must be home
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 13th 2008 9:26PM
SOCOM is released on the 14th. It will probably not be in your house until the 15th or 16th
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 10:09PM
Really? See, I was under the impression that people would go to their local gamestop / bb / whatever, or even have amazon do a release day delivery to have such a popular game the day it launches.... Silly me, I guess SOCOM fans aren't the hardcore FPS fans I thought they were.
Oh wait, all of what I just said is true.
DrunkRaba @ Oct 13th 2008 10:36PM
@ Mike
SOCOM is a TPS, not a FPS =-P
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 10:57PM
Err, that's what I meant - stupid typo. Thanks for correcting.
whistlepig @ Oct 13th 2008 11:23PM
well the beta server sucks bigtime with socom so i can only imagine how it will play the first few days socom is out
Albanian_Killa @ Oct 13th 2008 11:56PM
I get SOCOM on the 16th, but I'm going to be very busy until the 23rd, so I won't have any issues with this :P
SOCOM = Best Teamwork Shooter ever imo. SOCOM II all night and day if you were in the PS2 days.
GENPacker @ Oct 13th 2008 9:24PM
I know, I had to actually believe a game was coming out for it myself.
SecretAgentHam @ Oct 13th 2008 9:24PM
i hope this is not only for the FW but also Home as well... how awesome would that be if home releases before the NXE to steal some of its thunder? XD
wishful thinking.
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 10:11PM
I don't think Home is really stealing anyone's thunder - it was announced long ago, and, having been in the beta, I can safely say, don't get too excited about home. Not that the NXE is all that exciting either, but MS hasn't been promising that for over a year - the build up and the reveal balance out. It's not gonna balance out w/ home.
winlonghorn @ Oct 13th 2008 11:44PM
^You might think that, but if you are in the beta truly you should realize that this is just the beginning. They obviously have to have something more substantial upon the public launch. :)
j.howlett @ Oct 13th 2008 9:30PM
i've just been playing a bit of PJM here and a gta mission there. if i somehow get socom tomorrow i'll be able to wait a little longer as i charege the new headset, if i'm not already drunk.
Ted @ Oct 13th 2008 9:37PM
There was a joke in there and I laughed :)
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 13th 2008 9:39PM
so if joystiq did not relay this message to us, was sony going to let anybody know of this downtime??
lol..
at least ms gives us a month notice on this. they arent hiding anything...
sony stuff always has to leak...
wont be on psn anyway, no games to play that matter yet.. MGO was bleak.
cc123 @ Oct 13th 2008 9:52PM
Does ms dick-riding pay well or is it more of a hobby?
Just curious.
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 10:05PM
hey, he did make a valid point - he did it in an immature, fanboyish way, but it's a valid point none the less. MS, for all their shortcomings, does give a decent amount of heads up when downtime is coming. This is the first I've heard of tomorrow's PSN downtime, and I pay attention to that sort of thing - that's kinda crummy.
SexyKittyKat2U @ Oct 13th 2008 10:16PM
Lol cc123 will defend sony's idiotic decisions till the end of time.
And yes you're so right about MS at least warning us about these updates.
cc123 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:16PM
"MS, for all their shortcomings, does give a decent amount of heads up when downtime is coming."
How much heads up did MS give for all the downtime live had during the holidays last year?
If someone wants to say that Sony should give more heads up time for stuff like this then that's perfectly understandable. But you don't have to be a complete douche and praise another service that has had it's own problems with service up time, which is what this dude likes to do in threads here.
cc123 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:17PM
"Lol cc123 will defend sony's idiotic decisions till the end of time."
I haven't defended anything.
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 10:27PM
"If someone wants to say that Sony should give more heads up time for stuff like this then that's perfectly understandable. But you don't have to be a complete douche and praise another service that has had it's own problems with service up time, which is what this dude likes to do in threads here."
First off, I don't know if that last bit was directed at me or not, but I'm going to assume since you quoted me and not the original poster, it was. Assuming you were talking about me, no, I don't come on here and praise any one company over another. I praise whomever deserves it at the time, and badger whomever deserves it at the time. I will concede I should have said "MS, for all their shortcomings, does give a decent amount of heads up when SCHEDULED downtime is coming." because there's no way for anyone to give a heads up on unplanned downtime as was the case with the holiday incident on XBL. Yea, MS has problems - that's why I said the bit about all their shortcomings.
Second, as stated, I wasn't praising anyone - I was making a comparison between two companies that offer online gaming services. One usually gives roughly a month of notice for scheduled maintenance, while the other doesn't give any heads up. It's a valid comparison. When there's a competitor in your field, (whatever field that may be) expect to be compared to them.
Oh and lets not forget the fact that you pretty much just posted to slam MS for not giving you a heads up about maintenance that was caused by server load, while giving Sony a pass for not notifying you about scheduled maintenance.
afanboysayswhat?
cc123 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:37PM
It wasn't directed at you Mike. I quoted you and in my response I said "which is what this dude likes to do in threads here" which should have made it pretty clear that I was talking about him not you.
I never defended anything and I'm still not. I only brought up MS because I think it's retarded to use them as an example of what to do when they have had plenty of problems themselves. All I was doing was calling out a fanboy twat and instead you're here arguing with me about something that I agreed with you in the first place. Sony should have given more heads up if it was possible.
And yeah you're right, they couldn't have given us a heads up for problems that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Vidikron @ Oct 13th 2008 10:38PM
A month? Their last maintenance they gave us 6 days notice and it was down for an entire day. Granted, it's better than 1 day, but a far cry from a month and will only be down for 5 hours.
Mike @ Oct 13th 2008 11:00PM
cc123,
My bad then - I took your statements wrong, and I apologize.
Yea, there should be at least a week (if not more) for scheduled maintenance. I understand shit happens, but if you know you're doing it, let your customers know you're doing it.
VicViper09 @ Oct 13th 2008 11:04PM
Omg I wish I had a months notice to know about thiS DOWNTIME!!! WHAT AM I GONNA DO!! ALL MY APPOINTMENTS!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!
cc123 @ Oct 13th 2008 11:14PM
No worries, Mike.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:00PM
cc123- no its just when you own many more exclusive games for 1 console esp. in genres that sony once cared for such as RPG's, and SCE does not make MANY great games like they once did, however MS game studios continues to publish many great titles.
btw whats wrong with wanting some notice on PSN being down for a day?; its almost like they were just going to do it without warning which seems odd to me.
i guess you dont mind anything sony does as you must have a bias towards the ps3 by the way you comment.
and btw i dont like MGO sorry if you do and that offended you... lol...
