The Joystiq Free Game Club: Warfare 1917
As you long-time readers know, Joystiq loves the zombie-battling action from The Last Stand and The Last Stand 2. Now, developer Con-Artists has moved on to a new project, Warfare 1917, and though it lacks a horde of brain-hungry degenerates, its take on World War I is no less addictive.
You'll lead either the British or German forces as you try to overcome the steadily approaching opposition. It's both a battle for land and morale as you can win by either moving to the far right of the board or just beating up on your foes until they can't take it any more.
You'll decide which unit types you want to send out when, as well as the best time for them to move from trench to trench. Also at your disposal is a wide array of different big weapons like mortars and artillery, which you can rarely deploy without making sure your forces are far, far away from the target area.
We haven't completeld Warfare 1917, so we can't quite put it on the level with Last Stand yet. But if the early bits we've played are any indication, you might want to free up a couple of hours before deciding to give Warfare a try.

'Tis be a fun game. I beat it and must say its a great time waster. The last battle was particularly difficult with a 3 minute back and forth with critically low moral throughout. Overall, I'd give it a 4.5/5.
Oh, and the computer is a cheating bastard. Goddamn lucky mortars/gas attack.

This looks like fun, I should give it a try.
And it reminds me that there should be more WW1 games! (and movies!)
All of history did not happen between 1939 and 1945!

World War I Game?
Jump up, get slaughtered immediately. Repeat.
Unless you tackled fronts other than the Western Front, then it could actually be pretty interesting.

Not every engagement was like that, the battlefield experience was often a desperate struggle for survival hiding from crater to crater, dealing with mud, gunfire and gas. I'm sure a creative developer would come up with plenty of really intense, interesting scenarios.

I would also like to see a WWI game. With todays tech and storytelling ability, I think a very intense and interesting game could be made.

I thought that some time ago too. Even though I'm a Brit I'd play a good shooter if it was set in the US civil war, war of independance, or a less-known international war like the Korean

If this game more/bloodier animations, and then got put on the PSN, I would buy it.
It should also go on XBLA

That screenshot makes it look like Lemmings, which is pretty much what WWI was all about at the frontline.

Just played through the campaign. Pretty fun early on, though there isn't really much strategy, especially once tanks come into play. Once you get tanks, it's all about "will my artillery hit the enemy tank?" and "will incoming artillery miss my tank?" A lucky shot either way makes the battle swing wildly in favor of whoever has a tank left standing. I guess that's like real war, but it's maybe not the best gameplay design.

its fun, 'cept it keeps crashing...
