Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty: World at War beta
This week, we had the chance to enlist into the Call of Duty: World at War beta for Xbox 360, which features a handful of online maps to play. What follows is a back-and-forth discussion of our initial impressions after playing the game for a few hours.
Alexander Sliwinski: Um, isn't it just Call of Duty 4 with a different setting? |
Ross Miller: More or less, and I think that's a great way to describe the game: It's Call of Duty 4, with a few differences. For example, instead of helicopters, you've got dogs. |
Evil killer dogs. |
I don't know about you, but I'm not sure how I feel about the inclusion of dogs. You don't have a choice but to kill them when they come after you. If the idea of a yelping German Shepherd being shot bothers you, then you can't play this game online. Or maybe at all. |
If they were killer cats, give me a blender and I'll go to town. But not the poor puppies. In the developer's defense, though, Lara Croft killed endangered species ... like dinosaurs. |
That's true. I think the worst part about the dogs is they seemed to have replaced the COD4 bonus of calling in a helicopter. Also missing: red laser sights. In its stead, bayonets and rifle grenade launchers. |
Well, I'm fairly certain I saw artillery strikes getting called in. Not that I lived long enough to figure out what was really ever going on. |
Heh, problems dying too much? |
Oh, just a bit. Seriously, everyone is brown. Wait, that sounds racist. Like, everything is shades of brown and it's really hard to tell who you're supposed to shoot. Guess that's just a problem from years of Halo - actually, I totally acknowledge that's where that issue stems from. I'm so focused on looking for the green title over someone's head before I shoot and by that point I'm already dead. Shooting the first brown figure you see moving regardless of allegiance seems wrong somehow. I walked away from this thinking it's just COD4 revisited. The menu, the feel. |
Now with more Kiefer! Why is Jack Bauer telling me there's an enemy recon plane overhead? The Jack Bauer I know would've found a way to destroy the recon plane as faster than he could announce it. |
Well, dude did let LA get nuked, so he's not perfect. |
Fair enough. So in summation, World at War is COD4 with more Kiefer, more dogs, new setting and less futuristic weaponry. To its credit, online play so far has been virtually lag-free, even when playing with a group of Europeans. At first, I thought that was some cool voice filter. Turns out the German team was actually full of Germans. |
It's a beautiful game and it's exactly the thing those who liked COD4 would probably want ... if they were looking to take their battles and weaponry back 50 years. |
I just don't see what will compel COD4 players to switch over, at all, especially when Infinity Ward is still supporting the former. |
That's where I get stuck. It's all about setting. Oh, and while we're on the subject, the maps are perfectly competent with plenty of nooks and crannies. If you prefer WWII it's World at War, if you prefer the present then you'd just stick with COD4. |
Not only that, but COD4 is going to much cheaper when World at War comes out. I will say this about the game: It has tanks, which does give that specific map in the beta an added stress factor (in a somewhat good way) while being large enough that you can avoid it altogether if you want to. |
HOW DO YOU DESTROY THEM THOUGH!?!?! It's totally not clear. You don't just run up and get a pop-up of what you're supposed to do like in Halo. For a COD4 expert that's cool, but it doesn't bring newbs into the fold. |
You do if it's unoccupied or if its controlled by your team and there's a vacant seat. But no, getting that close, I think there's some conditioned from a game like Halo where you should be able to hijack it. I remember when Bungie first showed that off in a Halo 2 teaser, people were going nuts over it. |
Yeah, and I don't want it to sound like I'm negative on the game. It does what it does really well. I just don't see why COD4 fans would give up what they've got and it's still too COD4 for Halo fans to recognize it as anything else. |
Exactly. But hey, maybe a flamethrower does it for some people. Speaking of which, I haven't seen that yet in the beta, you? |
No. |
Ah well, it's not like I have a burning desire to do so ... |
Stop trying to start a flame war. |
Har. |

Ah man Joystiq is going to start having ads now when I try to open their page..
Christopher Grant @ Oct 14th 2008 9:42AM
We're looking into it – hope to have it resolved soon. :-/

This game is going to rock
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 8:12AM
Wow, I'm not even interested in CoD at all but your presentation was so excellent I kept reading. \o/
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 8:14AM
And what does Alex have against kitties? :(
ExMcCloud @ Oct 14th 2008 8:16AM
Girl we need to get u on some COD!
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 8:23AM
@ExMcCloud: Meh. I'm not into military or multiplayer FPS. I don't even play Halo. :O Give me a reason to stick around in an FPS and I will, though (Bioshock, Half-Life, Fallout, etc.)
Waffle Slayer @ Oct 15th 2008 7:34AM
I don't know what he has against cats but I poured a little of my 40 for all the cats he blended. :'(
Obie @ Oct 14th 2008 9:58AM
Welcome back Saria!
Sadly I don't think I will be getting COD5. Too many games again.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 10:11AM
Yay, Obie! :) I missed ye. My intarwebs are finally getting in order here so I shall be (dis)gracing Joystiq with my comments once again.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 14th 2008 10:35AM
I know what u mean but me being the Halo fan I am I probably wont touch COD 5 unless my boss gives me a copy or sumthing.......Sigh....I need another MP shooter...
Koopaknight29 - (Nintendo Loyalist) @ Oct 14th 2008 11:40AM
Have you tried Team Fortress 2 (PC)?
Great, fun atmosphere, its pretty laid back compared to other Multiplayer-FPS, and the community is (usually) friendly.
(On a slightly related note there are a surprising number of women playing the game too.)
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 12:15PM
@Koopa: Okay, guilty as charged. I really have no excuse for not trying TF since I own Orange Box... I promise I will get around to it someday.
Jakka @ Oct 14th 2008 12:37PM
Ever heard of Team Fortress 2?
Jakka @ Oct 14th 2008 12:39PM
lol
Should've refreshed...
...also if you really hate run & gun military FPS's then you'll seriously fall in love with TF2 thanks to it's wacky graphics.
Mark @ Oct 14th 2008 8:13AM
Sure its running off the COD4 engine, and the various videos make it look identical to COD4, but for whatever reason it doesnt feel like COD4. Thats not down to the WW2 setting either, but something fundamentally has gone wrong. I cant quite put my finger on what either. Though the player aspect doesnt feel as wide, the palette isnt as striking, characters seem to move faster or the hit detection is worse, the maps may well be larger but feel cluttered rather than open and clean. For whatever reason it just doesnt feel right, and I feel sorta bad for Infinity Ward, letting Treyarch making a mess of things again
Golds @ Oct 14th 2008 8:18AM
It looks like some people are too hooked on halo.
Why not compare the game to COD2. There is a tatical realism community in COD2 that is dying for an upgraded WWII game. COD4 just didn't have the command structure that COD2 had. Lets hope we can MOD out the tanks, the dogs, the tags ect.. You know that every COD2 map will be ported over, (which they already are for COD4 on the PC). This will be a huge game for PC players, there is a great amount of buzz going around for this game already. I am going to get it, I can't wait to use my favorite M1 Garand again.
Esat Dedezade @ Oct 14th 2008 8:21AM
Is... is it wrong that Halo3 is the only 360 game I have?
At least it's cheaper.... right?
ice~ @ Oct 14th 2008 8:21AM

I played the beta yesterday for a little bit. My first impressions were that it looks and feels like a cheap call of duty 4. The "trade-off" between helicopters and dogs is ridiculous. Another problem with the dogs is that they look just about the same for both teams. So if ur teammate calls out the dogs, u will probably shoot them thinking it's the enemy's dog. BUT! When the enemy takes out their dogs, u dont even shoot...*sigh*. I'm going to play the beta some more today and hope I find something I like.
ugotamesij @ Oct 14th 2008 8:28AM
How much have these guys played the beta? Yes, the game will have flamethrowers but they're locked until you rank up to a certain level. The beta is capped so you can only get up to rank 11.
And no mentions of the underpowered bolt rifles or the hopelessly screwed up spawning system. So many times have I spawned right in the middle of a bunch of the opposition. Once, I was alive for a fraction of a second, before an attack dog (which must have already been jumping through the air as I was spawning) ripped my face off.
Clinton RRoD sept.3 @ Oct 14th 2008 11:52AM
that reminds me of some call of duty 4 nightmares. im running with my group of soldiers only to get ripped apart by dogs. i hated those things
The Aggie CEO @ Oct 14th 2008 8:29AM
OH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
"RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
still not gonna buy this......lol.......
but I'll rent it JUST so I can release dogs on people
and so the Animal Rights Activist can call for a boycott of the game.....
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 14th 2008 8:45AM
+1 for this article.
And i agree, i can't see why i'd want to fall back 50 years in tech, and shooting Germans has gotten old (and i never thought i'd say that!).
Can this game offer anything to compete with that moment when you fired off the Javelin, and watched open mouthed as it shot skyward.
"Where the fucks it going?! .....oh hang on....YES!"
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 14th 2008 8:49AM
Oh and i know you shoot Japanese too, but i don't like to think about that.
Those little guys gave us Final Fantasy, and sushi.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 14th 2008 4:30PM
they did bomb pearl harbor right?
Robotochan @ Oct 14th 2008 8:46AM
I've noticed a lack of sniping in the beta... I'm so happy! The problem with CoD4 is there are too many "l33t" snipers that'll knock your penis off your lower regions before you have the chance to get blown up by someone throwing a perfectly honed grenade from the other side of the map.
Oh and Kiefer is awesome
Jack Tretton @ Oct 14th 2008 8:47AM
Disclaimer: This exchange did not really occur.
Ross Miller @ Oct 14th 2008 9:22AM
Correction: It did.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 9:23AM
You simply can't make up that awesomeness.
Jack Tretton @ Oct 14th 2008 10:09AM
No, you're right, Ross, you guys did have that conversation -- after much rehearsing and post-production.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 14th 2008 10:13AM
@Jack: Have you never listened to a 360 Fancast or Joystiq Podcast before? Some crazy shit goes down, and it's always candid and spontaneous!
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Oct 14th 2008 8:49AM
I have put in ALOT of hours into CoD4. I know everything about it. I think you being too harsh on World at War. CoD4 wasn't perfect. I remember spawning into claymores, airstrikes and right in front/behind enemies. Not to mention the bullet lag and screwy hit detection.
Treyarch can't win with you guys. There damned if they do damned if they don't. I would bet your assed that if Infinity Ward released these same level and upgrades that Treyarch included in World at War you guys would be praising them.
Please stop with all the blind hate. It remindes me of when I started modeling on 3DMax in college. The only reason why I hated using other software was because I learned on 3DMAX and was confortable. There is a lesson to be learned here. Be thankful that we have another COD to play this winter.
Travis @ Oct 14th 2008 8:57AM
agreed.
I'm still picking this up...I love WWII shooters!
and the idea of releasing dogs is incredible...that's a little more nerve racking than helicopters...it'd be frantic.
we will always have COD 4 for online if this doesnt live up to it...but the single player campaign should be decent
Matt @ Oct 14th 2008 10:46AM
I've played the beta a bit (got up to rank 11, and unlocked a few of the weapon add ons) and I'd say the are being pretty fair to the game. It does feel just like cod4 in wwII, and to me some of that just doesn't work very well. The artillery seems pretty useless, I think I've killed myself with it more than the enemy (even when I waited for a recon plane and placed it on a group of 5 enemies) and the dogs are pretty ridiculous.
Also, more than just the mechanics being off, the fact that it is set in WWII ruins some of the COD4 things they try to bring over. Such as the recon planes. How can they see me if I'm in a building? Allowing people to pick whatever weapon they wanted in COD4 worked, but in WaW, it just totally brings me out of the game when I'm killed by a Japanese soldier using an American or German gun.
J.Goodwin @ Oct 14th 2008 8:58AM
I'd like to see more articles like this one.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 14th 2008 9:09AM
Reviews like this would be awesome. And maybe press conference liveblogs.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 14th 2008 9:09AM
Well looks like if I want an intense war experience, I'm gonna wait until the great-looking KZ2 drops.
BeeDizz @ Oct 14th 2008 9:15AM
As a CoD4 fan what i liked about WaW WAS the differences. The whole "Its just CoD4 with new settings" is what i like about it. Who wants to play the same maps, with the same weapons, 10 million times? I've never understood it.
It's why i did prestigue as soon as i could, just to mix it up. WaW is exactly what i was looking for. A game that feels and controls like the game i love (CoD4), with enough differences to make it feel like a completely different game, which it is.
It's a shame the Beta won't let us try out the co-op campaign alittle. I'm interested in seeing how that plays out.
silverwolf761 @ Oct 14th 2008 11:05AM
Every CoD up to CoD4 was set in WWII, and you think it's "different"?
BeeDizz @ Oct 14th 2008 11:32AM
Nice to see people understand. The "difference" genius, is between WWII and Modern Warfare.
Eggy @ Oct 14th 2008 9:18AM
Years of Halo? My God how sad.
Christopher Grant @ Oct 14th 2008 12:23PM
Yeah, srsly, does ANYONE play that game? Oh a couple million people regularly? Oh ... I see ...
