I may be in the same boat as you here, pal. I love the Silent Hill series, and enjoyed playing it with all the lights off, sound up. That being said, I would never last too long when doing so :P So Dead Space might take awhile for me.

And I guess if Tuna has one ear, I'll 'take' the other? Too much?

Too many great games coming out, too many great games that I will have to postpone getting until much later. Regretfully, this will be one of them for me. Looks awesome though.

If you want something cool, check out the Full Throttle movie. It's basically all the cinematics in the game spliced together.

Aww, shit. I already have LBP, Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Gears 2, Order of Ecclessia, Sonic Chronicles and Fall Out 3 to buy in the next month and now I have to add Dead Space to the list? Why does every game company want me to get divorced?

Or get your friends to buy some of these then trade with them.

That's how I'm getting my copy of Dead Space.

i tend not to get more than one kind of game at a time. as it stands Gears of War 2 will be sating my droolage for third-person in just a few weeks, otherwise i'd easily get Dead Space. bummer. i may pick it up months after Res Evil 5; maybe by then it'll be cheaper.

Any reported differences between the PS3 and 360 versions? Trying to figure out which to pick it up for--leaning towards PS3 just because I have fewer games and trophies for PS3. Bracing myself for trolls, but if there's any actual reasons to pick one version of the game over the other, I'd be interested to hear it.

Not to start a flamewar here (since I know there are the oddballs out there that prefer the opposite), but why would you want to play a shooting game with the PS3 controller when you can play it with the 360 controller?

That would be almost as odd as preferring to play a fighting game that doesn't have online play with the 360 controller when you could play it with the PS3 one.

I would say go for the PS3 version. The PS3 was the lead platform in Redwood Shores' development process. The 360 version is gonna be a port.

Many of the reports are claiming it can be beat in roughly 12 hours, and there's little replay value once completed. Although that also comes with endless praise over the visual quality and scare factor.

I do intend to get this on the 20th for the PC, but if it'll remain a keeper remains to be seen. Even tho people are saying it's short, I tend to spend alot of time in a game appreciating the beauty of it and the work that's gone into the aesthetics. Bioshock was the same way...I'd spend a ton of time just staring out the windows into the water. I suspect Dead Space will prompt the same, only you'll be staring out into the quiet sky as a disembodied arm floats by trailing blood behind it.

par for the course for most games that aren't adventure, RPG, or online.

I know I'll be in the minority here, but I'll be passing on this because 15-20 hours for this type of game is way too long. I know things will drag and I'll start getting bored right around the 7-8 hour mark with this type of game.

You know, you guys should have used THIS quote from Gamespot:

"With its disturbingly twisted visuals, its deeply engrossing story, and innovative strategic dismemberment combat system, Dead Space is a best-in-its-class game that surpasses other entries in its venerable genre in nearly every way and will be the standard by which they are judged for years to come."

I mean really, now, who is still waiting for RE5?

Who?... those who think that since Dead Space doesn't have gimped controls it's not an actual Survival Horror game. Apparently, "survival" means "fighting the controls to stay alive".

Not necessarily bad controls, but limited skill-set, which can be achieved through deliberately bad controls

Just because some people like there to be no distinction between a horror game and a 3rd-person-shooter doesn't mean that everyone has to.

I personally prefer that games don't use bad controls as a crutch to increase difficulty.... but that's just me.

And what do you mean by no distinction? I hate when people act like all FPS/TPS are the same. They're not. And why should the distinction be shitty controls vs good controls?

Anyway, as far as the genre goes, the "horror" part is obvious. It's clearly a creepy game. The "survival" part is where things get tricky and where RE falls flat on its face. RE uses cheap tactics like bad controls to make things difficult. It also uses limited supplies in situation that don't often make sense. I mean, if you're part of a military squad going to an area where you might be expecting trouble why wouldn't you have a decent supply of ammo with you? Or at least enough to last a while. It's nonsense.

OTOH, Dead Space is apparently about an engineer going to fix a deep space mining ship that is broken down. Then he gets there and finds out all hell has broken loose and must resort to using mining equipment as weapons. Now THAT makes sense. Of course the guy is going to be low on supplies, he wasn't expecting a fight.

I know some people are sold on this idea that poor controls are a staple of the genre, but I just think there are far more creative ways of accomplishing the same effect without using piss poor controls and limited supplies in situations that make no sense.

Amazon has a new service with PRIME that will get the game to you on LAUNCH day if you pre-order it. (limited to certain games.. Fable II, Fallout 3...etc ) You should check if Dead Space is one..
