SCEE dates new PS3, PSP firmware for Oct. 15
The UK's semi-official PlayStation blog, ThreeSpeech, has published a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe press release on PS3 firmware 2.5 and PSP firmware 5.0, which includes the line: "Both system software updates will be released on 15th October." Hey, that's ... tomorrow!
The Oct. 15 date is also backed up by a post on SCEE's official forums from one of its community leads. All indications point towards tomorrow being the day both platforms will get tricked out with the new features we posted about yesterday, plus a couple of surprises – most notably Flash 9 support for the PS3's web browser. We've dropped SCEA a line for confirmation on a North American rollout of the firmware tomorrow.

Flash 9? does that mean my ps3 can watch those movies site online?
Chin-Poh @ Oct 14th 2008 1:55PM
Yes, many more video streaming sites will work now.
Now if only Flash 9 could come to the PSP, at least the new models with more internal RAM. :)
Haggard @ Oct 14th 2008 2:39PM
Oh sweet! Spankwire in my living room..
ice~ @ Oct 14th 2008 7:16PM

Brent @ Oct 14th 2008 1:57PM
Hulu on PS3? Count me in.
Heyyou27 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:10PM
I love Hulu, and being able to use it on my PS3 will make it even better.
Tiptup300 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:26PM
YAY! Now I can watch all those free po-... popular movie websites! Yeah! >_>
DarkNessBear @ Oct 14th 2008 2:54PM
WOOHOO! Hulu works! Yay! My damn PlayOn no longer works, so this is all I got now! Yay
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Oct 14th 2008 2:55PM
Just because the site will work now doesn't mean the browser has the memory to handle it; don't get your hopes up.
CrashSpyro123 @ Oct 14th 2008 3:08PM
Use PlayOn to get Hulu stuff on your PS3 using its media streaming feature. It's works fine for me and saves me the frustration of using the browser.
94 taurus owner @ Oct 14th 2008 9:25PM
Hulu on PSP would be greater.
OMGOMG @ Oct 14th 2008 1:58PM
So, when they say October 15, what date do they really mean?
Invisible Robot Meat @ Oct 14th 2008 2:01PM

Invisible Robot Meat @ Oct 14th 2008 2:04PM

Sundermania @ Oct 14th 2008 2:13PM
Lousy Smarch weather...
Vcize @ Oct 14th 2008 2:28PM
Octobruary only has 32 days. Get your shit together, man.
umm....hello??? @ Oct 14th 2008 2:05PM
yippee, finally Sony's supercomputer can do everything my cheap-ass laptop can do...now how about AUTO-VIDEO SWITCHING SONY???????
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 14th 2008 2:29PM
I bet your laptop can't do Metal Gear.
umm....hello??? @ Oct 14th 2008 2:39PM
I don't need my laptop to do MGS4, that's why I have my PS3. I just prefer auto-video switching over a patch for a web browser that's outdated and never used...
DangerMouse @ Oct 14th 2008 2:39PM
The MSX has been emulated for years.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Oct 14th 2008 2:59PM
What do you mean by auto video switching? Because the possibilities I'm thinking of don't deserve a question mark, let alone a string of them.
Popfrogs @ Oct 14th 2008 3:56PM
LOL, this guy with his video switching complaining again.
Protip: keep your PS3 out of pawn. Then you'll NEVER have to switch the video outputs.
umm....hello??? @ Oct 14th 2008 4:15PM
auto-video switching is being able to switch between HDMI/component/standard connections without having to switch the setting on the menu...which means I have to hook up BOTH settings to set up the NEW setting I want...which sucks when I bring my PS3 and RockBand or R:FOM multiplayer over to my friend's house to play on his tube TV (because I can't do it over there because no HDMI input on his TV to see what I'm doing in the menus)....
YouBetcha @ Oct 14th 2008 4:27PM
Here's a little known tip:
If you hold down the power button so the PS3 turns on, off, then on again (should take about 15 seconds), it'll recognize the new video input setting. Tadaa, video switching has been there all along!
Michael @ Oct 14th 2008 4:27PM
you dont need to hook both up. hold the power button in for 5 seconds when starting the system it will reset the audio/video options and search for whatever is connected automatically and then ask which to use.
YouBetcha @ Oct 14th 2008 4:29PM
Take that Michael! Feels good to be on the fast side for once ;-)
umm....hello??? @ Oct 14th 2008 6:18PM
thanks....didn't know that was possible.
Neuromancer @ Oct 14th 2008 2:06PM
Something tells me Pandora.com still won't work.
The Aggie CEO @ Oct 14th 2008 2:13PM
yea it may be one of those "page too big to be opened" sites..........
sucks ass that happens.....
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Oct 14th 2008 2:56PM
Pandora wasn't limited by the flash plugin, it was limited by memory, which is not going to change with this update. Don't expect Hulu to load, either.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 14th 2008 2:09PM
Wake me up when it hits the shores of the UK ¬_¬
Chin-Poh @ Oct 14th 2008 2:20PM
I'm quite sure for the PSP and PS3, you can use any region's firmware update on your system with no side effects.
j.howlett @ Oct 14th 2008 2:12PM
now i can visit more official game sites from my ps3.
Neuromancer @ Oct 14th 2008 2:20PM
Wish this would fix my remote play for my PSP/PS3. Kind of useless when it makes it so that my PS3 never turns off.
daaWick @ Oct 14th 2008 3:11PM
Sony needs to make a huge deal about Flash 9 support if you can watch Hulu, etc... on it. If that is the case it would have a very good (and in my opinion better) alternative to the 360 Netflix paid subscription.
Popfrogs @ Oct 14th 2008 4:00PM
I got excited too until, like many others, I realized the crappy XMB browser may run out of memory on alot of the sites you want to use Flash9 on.
For awhile I kicked around the idea of making a Webkit browser for the PS3 and selling it via the PSN, but I gave up on the idea. Sony is a shadowy company when it comes to contacting them for development...they kinda have to find YOU.
The advantage to a discrete app like a webkit browser for the PS3 is that it would have full access to the memory and hardware like a game would.
Ordeith @ Oct 15th 2008 2:22AM
See PlayOn
Hulu, Netflix, youtube..
On your PS3 AND your 360.
ungu @ Oct 14th 2008 3:02PM
no word on being able to import tracks from the PS2 Singstar games? Also being able to get audio from both HDMI and optical out would be great.
CGamble20 @ Oct 14th 2008 7:32PM
Finally!!!! PORN!!!!
Gugi9000 @ Oct 14th 2008 11:17PM
I suppose this update is the reason that PS Store (including SingStore) has been down for the last 5 hours?
geesh.. if only the'd warned of explained in store rather than Error 80023017..
DrunkRaba @ Oct 15th 2008 1:04AM
isn't that code self explanatory enough? lol
stupid effing codes, an explanation would be nice
DrunkRaba @ Oct 14th 2008 9:34PM
Crap, i'm not going to be able to get the woman off of the thing if she can play poppit (on pogo.com) on the big screen now. :(
