Joystiq interview: Bungie's Jarrard talks Halo 3: Recon, new weapons, details

Recently, Bungie Studios community director Brian Jarrard - better known to Halo fans as "Sketch" - took some time to clear up a few lingering questions about Halo 3: Recon and Halo 3's upcoming Mythic Map Pack as well as some general Bungie topics.
From our informal chat, we learn that Halo 3: Recon will stay relatively true to Halo 3's formula, meaning that we won't be seeing any game engine improvements or added features. But Jarrard did confirm that (at minimum) one new weapon will make an appearance in Recon and a new soundtrack will debut. We also touch on the topic of Recon's Forge, learning what it is not and discuss why Bungie chose to not make it as feature-rich as a map editor like, say, what Far Cry 2 has to offer. There's Vidmaster achievement and Mythic Map Pack talk as well and the conversation somehow leads to the topic of global domination and pie.
Gallery: Halo 3: ODST controller/pack shots
Why did Bungie feel the urge to go back and tell a part of Halo 2's story through a the ODST's point of view?
Halo 3: Recon is really a labor of love for our fans. Halo 3 is still going strong, there is a lot of demand for more, more, more. Just doing more of the same wasn't good enough for us, so the team started working on ideas to change things up a bit. The ODSTs have always been fan favorites and the events that unfolded on Earth is something fans still clamor for after being "short changed" in Halo 2. Everything just added up and it's a win-win really.
Does the ODST and all three other co-op players (presumably ODST soldiers) have back story written into the Halo lore?
You will get familiarized with the characters in Recon, but not to the extent of someone like Master Chief, who has been the subject of exhaustive back story and spin-off material.
Seeing that Halo 3's engine will be two years old by the time Recon releases, will it be improved with new effects, new visuals and some sort of anti-aliasing?
This is very much an expansion to Halo 3, being built on top of the existing technology. This allows our team to focus on the gameplay elements first and foremost, since this is a very short cycle for us. So, that also means it will have full feature parity (4 player co-op, saved films, screenshots, stats, etc.) as Halo 3.
Sounds like Recon is staying pretty true to being an expansion in terms of features. So, would it be a fair assumption to say there won't be any new/modified weapons, new equipment or a new soundtrack?
"I believe I saw a new weapon already in the announcement trailer and I think I heard some new music as well. I can't really talk about that stuff in detail right now." |
I don't think that's a fair assumption. I believe I saw a new weapon already in the recent announcement trailer and I think I heard some new music as well. I can't really talk about that stuff in detail right now.
So, you're just going to leave us with that tease?
Okay, I will confirm new music and at least one new gun.
Many fans have speculated that the blue and red Covenant outline that was seen in Recon's announcement trailer hints a it being component of the actual gameplay. Is that something we should expect in Recon or was that done for trailer purposes?
The components of the announcement trailer are very true to the spirit of the actual game. All will be revealed in due time.
What about Forge? We heard there will be "expanded Forge options." What should we expect?
Yes, I had a feeling the word "expanded" would be misinterpreted, especially in light of the recent frenzy of speculation surrounding "Forge 2.0" and "campaign Forge" rumors that came up after our recent acceptance videos.
You're referring to the video that showed off some sort of blue grid, correct?
Yes, that's the one. We've already debunked any notion of a "Forge 2.0", but all of the multiplayer maps that are included with Recon will definitely take advantage of Forge in various ways.
Did Bungie ever consider a map editing tool as powerful as a map editor like Far Cry 2?
"Attempting to do a full geometry editor like Far Cry 2 would have possibly killed us or at least severely delayed the game's release." |
Forge was our first step into the realm of letting people start to manipulate and create custom content and manipulate multiplayer experiences. Considering how much we already managed to cram into Halo 3 from a tech/feature perspective, attempting to do a full blown geometry editor like Far Cry 2 would have possibly killed us or at least severely delayed the game's release. We're really happy with how Forge turned out though and, honestly, it's still coming into it's own. With the recent updates to Bungie.net and improving file sharing, we're seeing more custom content being created and shared than ever before. Our Forge editor was always designed as a social experience, something you goof around with and have fun with your friends, but also something powerful enough to alter the way a map is played.
Speaking of maps, there's a bunch of confusion regarding how the Recon exclusive multiplayer maps and general matchmaking experience will work next Fall. Can you briefly explain how matchmaking between Halo 3 and Halo 3: Recon will function, if they'll share the same matchmaking space, and if the content from the Recon disc will be stored on the 360's HDD?
Think of Halo 3: Recon really as two games in one. You have the new Recon campaign that is a separate "title ID" and includes 1000 gamerscore and achievements, etc. It's campaign only. The multiplayer maps are more Halo 3 goodness, still considered "regular" Halo 3 content and the multiplayer stuff is interchangeable in that regard. If you purchase the Mythic Map pack via the Xbox Live Marketplace early next year, but your friend doesn't get those maps until the Recon disc comes out, they will work together just fine.
So, Recon will include the complete Halo 3 multiplayer experience (maps and all) and will communicate/share matchmaking space with other Recon players as well as Halo 3 players?
"If you buy the Mythic Map pack via the XBLM early next year but your friend doesn't get those maps until Recon comes out, they will work together just fine." |
I don't think those specifics are completely ironed out yet beyond the guaranteed addition of new maps to the Recon package
Regarding the Mythic Map Pack, does January 6th hold any significance?
Really, there is no date set for the release right now. We want nothing more than to get them into the hands of our fans, but we're waiting to find out when that will be. The sooner the better.
Thanks to the latest Halo 3 title update and the reveal of the Mythic achievements, we know there will be six new Mythic maps. Will any of the maps be remakes of either Halo or Halo 2 maps? Like, say, a remake of Ivory Tower?
Well, the only map I'm really able to talk about right now is the one we've already revealed, Assembly, which is a completely original creation.
Come on Brian, not even a little tease? Will we see either remade OR inspired-by Halo or Halo 2 maps in the Mythic Pack?
(they are listening ...)
We'll take that.
I can confirm you will not see a remake or inspired version of Chiron TL34.
Shucks, I know a lot of fans were really rooting for that remake. Those same Mythic achievements also revealed multiplayer skulls. Traditionally, skulls were hidden in Halo 3 campaign levels, how will unlocking skulls work in a multiplayer environment?
Skulls like to hide.
A game of find the hidden skull and unlock an achievement?
That sounds like a reasonable assumption.
Gallery: Bungie 'Keep it Clean' Halo 3 teaser
Continuing our achievement curiosity, what about those Vidmaster achievements? You've been quoted as saying that they'll lead to "something that should be of great interest to fans." Care to explain?
Well, I meant that the Vidmaster Achievements will ultimately result in something cool that, I assume, would be of great interest.
Like in-game content, recon armor or a piece of pie?
I do not think we can support the logistics or infrastructure required to bake and distribute desserts on a global scale. If only ...
You might want to invest in that, I believe it to be an integral part to the success of Bungie's plan for global domination. So, here's an interesting one for you. If Halo 4 were "theoretically" in development, would Bungie be interested in developing it? If not and Bungie wanted to pursue other projects, would Bungie be comfortable allowing another studio to take the Halo 4 reins?
"Whether or not we are comfortable with someone else doing [a Halo sequel] is somewhat irrelevant. " |
As a studio we do still enjoy the Halo universe and there are still many people who would be interested in exploring more ideas in that space. Whether or not we are comfortable with someone else doing it is somewhat irrelevant. It isn't really our call and we already know there are multiple Halo projects underway that Bungie is not involved with.
Finally, what's up with Bungie denying Xbox 360 Fanboy's request for a Humpday Challenge? You aren't scared of our "elite" Halo 3 skills or afraid of being shown up. Are you?
Is this another attempt at redemption for the whooping you took at PAX?
Again, you bring up that painful memory.
We haven't had a Humpday Challenge in a little while, but it sounds like something you and Mr. Smith should take up directly considering he's the one who schooled you once already.

they very bluntly ignored the question regarding any improvements to the graphics engine and especially anti-aliasing. i hope they take the two years as an opportunity and do something about it.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 15th 2008 8:29AM
Yup, they just brushed that question off. Dude WTF! I like the way Halo 3 looks and all but by then its REALLY going to look dated. Damn Bungie, you couldn't license the UE3 eh? It's not even going to look better than UT3 on 360 which looks breathtaking. Oh well, 99.9% chance that I'll still pick it up. =/
Alex @ Oct 15th 2008 9:04AM
No they didn't he said it would still be the same engine because it's like an expansion pack so there focusing on gameplay and leaving the graphics the same which sucks!
dwhite @ Oct 15th 2008 9:09AM
Relax... You know the story for this, it goes something like:
1. announcement and vague details
2. nit pick, bitch, moan, wheez, gasp by the blogging elite
3. hype hype hype and bad marketing. someone call Mountain Dew
4. more bitching by fanboys and haters alike
5. yet even more hype and a catchy commercial
6. review embargos and more bitching, plus pirating
7. game releases, sells one million plus on day one and xbox live shudders with slow down and the raving screams of cursing twelve year olds.
Just relax and breathe. Try not to expect too much and remember resistance is futile.

Just because they didn't answer with "Yes, Recon will be sporting entirely upgrading graphics and a complete re-haul in visuals" doesn't mean graphics won't be improved.
Bungie has always been secretive about their projects.
It wouldn't make sense for the graphics not to look better, just consider we still have a year until this is released.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 15th 2008 8:24AM
Great interview but Foxtrot I thought he was quite clear about the graphics question "This is very much an expansion to Halo 3, being built on top of the existing technology." Seemed pretty straight forward....Either way I'm buying this game and hopefully they give RECON its on Slayer and Team slayer playlist...That would be teh awesome!
vanquish @ Oct 15th 2008 8:32AM
I really hope they do include AA, you can't have AAA titles like Halo without anti-aliasing, its ridiculous. I agree with Kotaku voices on the matter, http://kotaku.com/gaming/event/halo-3-impressions-259931.php
I mean if Bungie keep harping on on how they aim for a clean, uncluttered look (as opposed to GoW gritty detail), H3R should have AA, so we can finally have some straight lines!
ExMcCloud @ Oct 15th 2008 8:41AM
Why in the hell is it so hard for Bungie to step it up and fix that shit...I'm a huge fan but damn those Jaggies do suck hard core....I hate playin the game on HD cuz it takes away the look of the Bright color pallet they got goin on in the game
Erluti @ Oct 15th 2008 9:02AM
Do add in a graphical flourish like that would be altering the way you render stuff, and would amount to a pretty big change. Things like weapon damage and movement speeds are typically stored outside the core engine so you can tweak it. But to change how the graphics rendered would be a huge jump.
Also, Halo 3 was made in 720p, so anything bigger then that and you are just seeing a rescaled image, which will make jaggies worse.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 15th 2008 10:14AM
I remember Joystiq doing an article on this oh yeah Halo was made in 640P it had something to do with Lighting effects....So not only is there no AA it wasn't even made in true High Definition....Man for all the Tech in the box Halo is lacking some major tech to make their Tech look better...lol....Oh well still a GREAT game and thats all that matters
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/halo-3-not-hd-runs-at-640p-pixel-counters-claim/
wiredknight @ Oct 15th 2008 11:38AM
@Elruti
Mmmmmmmnot really. Anti-aliasing is a post-processing effect, meaning it's calculated after the initial render. Yes, it's a processor-heavy effect, but it's not difficult to do.
Haon @ Oct 15th 2008 8:35AM
The jaggies are pretty bad in Halo 3. Maybe there is some hope with the install to hd option coming.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Oct 15th 2008 9:22AM
Yes because storing data on a HD = instant anti-alisiang *rolls eyes*
Haon @ Oct 15th 2008 9:29AM
Roll your eyes all you want douche. I didn't say AA would instantly work but they are they architects of the engine and they have a year. Maybe something will come out of it.
ryan @ Oct 15th 2008 11:48AM
what?! installing games doesn't improve the graphics! it only cuts down on load times. that's it.
vanquish @ Oct 15th 2008 8:41AM
Too bad they didn't ask about gameplay changes, ie whether you still have shields, jumping etc.
On the topic of map remakes, why aren't they remaking chiron (aka the teleporter map from H1), that was one of the most innovative maps, ridiculously fun in multiplayer as well. There's nothing like running into a teleporter, to escape from a guy with a shotgun, only to run into a guy with a rocket launcher.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 15th 2008 8:44AM
Or the guy with a shotgun just following you because you have to reload your pistol........Then the Assualt rifle is empty...And its you and him, him and you....He thought he was gonna kill me but I jumped at the last minute....Did a SHaun White 720 and got a ninja smack to the back of the head.....Gawahhaaahahahahaha.........
Yeah thats great stuff(Pant)(Pant).....Better than sex

Ask Petey Molyneaux* about yapping too much...

ya but they dodged all the questions, they couldve said at least 1 small thing...

BUNGIE!!!,
Thanks but no thanks for Hyping an expension which clearly will have no updated graphics looks.
My 8 an 9 year old nephews first question were:
Cool! Halo3 recon is coming!!...Are the graphics going to be better this time????
I (dumbo that I am) responded with an "ofcourse...Or they would not hype it as a big secret project BUNGIE was working on" !)
But judging by this review BUNGIE is clearly NOT pleasing the BUNGIE fans (even the young ones) by stating early that no graphics upgrade should be expected"
Well, this probably will go in the books as the worst extension in hystory because of all the hype around it. (just look what happened with too human...a very good game , but just the knowlegde of the hype and the not AAA graphics killed/crushed its sales and reviews..So if microsoft thinks they are going to get away with hyping this thing to much (based on this interview I think they are hyping it too much))..think twice!!!
ExMcCloud @ Oct 15th 2008 10:17AM
Well honestly its gonna get hyped, its gonna sell one million plus the first day and still probably get reviews in the high 8-9 range so............Whats the issue for Microsoft or Bungie here?
I mean Even as a HALO FAN BOY I agree with you but Im just saying...
Intentless @ Oct 15th 2008 10:30AM
Graphics do not make a game and seriously the AA and what not on Halo 3 aren't even terribly noticeable unless you are looking for it... I rather have a game that runs well and looks decent than a game that looks gorgeous but runs like shite...
Orion @ Oct 18th 2008 12:33AM
I think that the other people who posted here ignored the most obvious disturbing issue... why the hell are your nephews which are only 8 and 9 playing a game like Halo?
Geez.. I remember being 13 and thinking Forsaken was a big deal to play. Talk about a lack of parenting. Reminds me of the parents at Gamestop that hear the clerk shout off all that's in the game: whores, sex, drugs, guns, blood, rape... and they say to their kid "sure ok"... and he's 8. ugh
Lone Starr @ Oct 15th 2008 10:10AM
No Chiron? :(
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Oct 15th 2008 10:30AM
Why didn't Bungie just make a new game? Halo has a huge following and it seems like they are just trying to milk you guys even more. Halo 3 broke records when it was released. I would think it would have been alot better to just create a new game, not an expansion for 60$. I think this could be a bad move by MS and Bungie.
Intentless @ Oct 15th 2008 10:31AM
From the talk so far it will not be 60 bucks... All though with the economy going through the crapper I wouldn't be surprised to see changes in the overall pricing structure of gaming along with everything else in the not so near future...
Jack of No Trades 85 @ Oct 15th 2008 10:33AM
Oh, I just thought of something. Wouldn't it be funny if Bungie was just pulling our leg on this game and it really is a brand new Halo. I guess we will see...
wiredknight @ Oct 15th 2008 11:38AM
Hah. You think Bungie would go through an entire development process and do all that work when they can just get away with an expansion and make just as much money?
brother.rope @ Oct 15th 2008 10:41AM
Halo FOR THE WIN!!!
Seph X @ Oct 15th 2008 10:48AM
Since Bungie said that you wont be able to play as an ODST for multiplayer and that they're never going to add new armor for multiplayer, my interest in Recon dropped drastically.
1- Not paying $60 bucks for a campaign that'll probably be shorter then H3.
2- There's no reason Bungie cant add new armor/characters in for Halo 3 Multiplayer, and if they seriously cant then they probably broke one of the most basic and fundamental rules of programming (business or gaming alike).
karamo17 @ Oct 15th 2008 10:56AM
Interesting, I get to get my halo3 back i miss the multiplayer.
Dave @ Oct 15th 2008 11:09AM
I still can't believe people are spending all this time bitching about graphics. Personally, I could give a "hoot" about graphics - so long as they aren't so bad that the game is completely unplayable due to the fact that you can't distinguish one thing from another (which is not the case in Halo).
Halo is fun, and continues to be fun. If all you want is clean graphics, go play some of the boring PC games that require you to spend $8000 on a rig that will be out of date for next year's release (Here's looking at you, Crysis). I'll take an extremely fun game with some slight jaggies any day.
Misframed @ Oct 15th 2008 11:17AM
@ ExMcCloud: High definition is anything over 480p. Sony started calling 1080p "true high def" to make the 360 look bad as it only rendered 720p at launch...
AmplifiedJ @ Oct 15th 2008 11:18AM
Okay, I just have to speak up about this AA/jaggy issue. Yes, it is noticeable in HD. Yes, I have noticed it and wish it wasn't there.
BUT.
Have you guys ever actually walked around and looked at all the insane amount of detail in Halo 3? I mean, the everything from the differing degrees of texture on surfaces to colors to the effects of sunlight and what not? It's clearly got a touch of polish and a whole lot of love and work put into it. Here's a fun exercise. Go to Ghost Town, grab a sword or some other light source, and walk up to the blue barrels over by the overshield. Mmmm bumpy. Now hypothetically, you figure that your average MP map has instances like this all over the place that you're not accounting for while you're running around trying to find someone to shoot. Heck, your own armor has varying degrees of detail that you don't even see until you look at pictures of yourself you've saved.
So, while the jags are a bit jarring sometimes (especially when it's on your main weapon like the AR and you are standing in light), I will say that it's probably one of the most detailed games in terms of graphics I have personally seen on the 360. Yes, that is above Call of Duty (which just runs smoothly, which helps out things immensely) and Gears. I recently came back to Halo after months of Call of Duty and just the graphical fidelity is eye-opening, to say the least. One thing about Call of Duty is that almost every map has a dominant color scheme permeating everywhere (which is probably true to real life). I just appreciate the variances in Halo, I guess.
However, I will say that Gears 2 looks f-ing ridic.
VicViper09 @ Oct 15th 2008 12:29PM
Totally man, i hear ya bra. I mean honestly look at the grass or the cliffs, totally awesome.
vanquish @ Oct 15th 2008 6:55PM
Actually COD4, and definitely Gears of War (not even 2) has more texture detail than Halo 3. The second biggest issue with Halo 3's graphics (apart from no AA) is the terrible faces, Bungie's character modelling skills are not in the same league as Epic's. I think Bungie has a really strong programming team, and good concept artists, but the modellers themselves aren't the best.
And GoW has fantastic lighting as well, with all the luminous surfaces that glow and all. Another indicator of GoW technical superiority, is in splitscreen where it doesn't look any worse than the single player game, while Halo 3 splitscreen coop is letterboxed, and draw distance is significantly reduced (eg grass).
Spillrag @ Oct 15th 2008 11:29AM
Why do all you guys just care about graphics? there's more to a game then that, like the actual gameplay, story, etc. Besides did you ever consider the fact that maybe Halo runs so well because it doesn't have to worry about intensive graphics processing, that way it can worry about runing the game smooth. if Bungie revamps the game engine for AA then it could affect gameplay, then again it would give all you haters something else to complain about. Anyways go Bungie you guys are awesome!
