Sega announced that it will bring Phantasy Star Portable, the on-the-go flavor of its popular Phantasy Star Universe, to North America in March 2009, finally giving us a reason to cash in those meseta savings bonds grandma left behind before taking off for Palma to retire.
Serving as a kind of prequel to its console cousin, the game will bring a new character to the series, alongside 150 new weapons and items and support for wireless co-op play. Phantasy Star Portable's release in Japan earlier this year was met with rabid sales, and it will be interesting to see if players over here will be just as eager to level up to Sega's latest role-playing offering.

You know, I loved Phantasy Star Online back on the Dreamcast, but it really saddens me that Sega has completely abandoned the idea of creating another traditional Phantasy Star title.
Phantasy Star (II and IV particularly) used to be one of the best RPG series around.

You know, the more I look at it, it seems like Sega is willingly trying to split the Phantasy Star market (not that that's a bad thing). The PSP has PSU, and the more I look at PS0 on the DS, the more it looks like PSO(BB to be exact). As an owner of both handhelds, I'm much more excited about the DS one than this one, but Sega's putting on a VERY strong show at this time...I wonder if all of their projects go well (namely, the DS RPGs for me :)), will the rumor about the Dreamcast 2 in 2009 (at least an official announcement) become true? Here's hoping.

Dreamcast 2 will never happen. SEGA's done with the hardware business. The ink's been dry for years on that one.

I actually enjoyed PSU a lot .. and I'm not really an MMO fan. I guess it was "easier" and more accessible than WoW. I might have to get a copy of this!

I've got the japanese demo to this on my PSP and I must say that it controls amazingly well on the system and looks fantastic. If you like the console version, this is a MUST.
