Joystiq hands-on: Gears of War 2's Horde mode
It seems that most games with standout multiplayer components have that one killer match type you'll spend more time with than all the others combined. With Gears of War 2, that distinction goes to the Horde mode.
We originally met up with staff from Epic and Microsoft (along with a couple dozen other journos) to get utterly neck-deep in the game's multiplayer modes. That quickly turned to mode, singular, as shouts of "Horde!" echoed in response to our hosts' request for a game type to kick things off with. After only a couple of rounds, we could tell where all that enthusiasm came from.

It's not about progression; it's about doing everything possible to stay alive. |
Horde is a mode that can be played on any of the game's multiplayer maps. What sets it apart from everything else Gears 2 has to offer in terms of cooperative or competitive play – or most multiplayer you've experience, for that matter – is the basic concept of facing wave after wave of progressively more brutal enemies as a team.
The basic rule is survival. Horde consists of 50 attack waves broken down into five sets of 10. With each new "tier," the enemies become stronger, tougher, and deadlier. We teamed up with four other players to face off against the Locust in "Blood Drive," a map based on the campaign mode's hospital environment. It was our first time in, and we were among veterans. When the match started, we ran around like (almost) total noobs, wondering where the enemies were. Oh, they were coming.
Each match starts out with a brief lull wherein players can pick up spawned-in weapons and ammo before high-tailing it back to the location the team's chosen to defend. Again, it's not about progression; it's about doing everything possible to stay alive (and being quick to revive your fallen squad mates).
One basic tactic we found was sticking grenades (regular, incendiary, poisonous) around any paths leading into the control point. In our situation, we were defending a room with only two entrances – the fewer, the better. Once the Horde begins its onslaught, the strategy turns to focusing fire on the most dangerous enemies first. If you run out of ammo, that's it – only the truly brave (or stupid) venture beyond the control point to grab extra rounds.
Squad members can be heard even when they're dead, so there was plenty of cheering on of the "sole survivor" up against crazy odds. |
As the waves progressed, we started seeing bigger, nastier enemies. Our tactics changed to accommodate them. One very crucial part of our team's strategy in later waves involved grabbing shields from downed Locust and planting them at the entrances to our control point.
In our time playing, we witnessed many a last-ditch effort to survive while an on-screen indicator ticked away, letting us know how close the wave was to ending. There were also many heroic moments, since only one member of the team needs to be alive to win the wave. Squad members can be heard even when they're dead, so there was plenty of cheering on of the "sole survivor" up against crazy odds.
It's easy to see playing just one map in Horde mode for days with friends, trying to finish off level 50. Those with a serious goal of doing so will want to steer clear of public games, though, since they always start from wave one. Private games have checkpoints after each wave, with the option to restart where you left off next time. The only rub there is that you'll have lost any shields, planted grenades, etc. you would have put in place earlier.
Given that there's also a team and personal point-scoring element to all of this – along with leaderboards for each map in Horde mode – the incentive to FSDHM (forgo sleep due to Horde mode) is abnormally high.

Wow...Bigger better more bad ASS....I wish they would have done something like this for the Resistance Co-op...Been playin the Beta and the Multiplayer Campain....Is Meh......Probably because they dont have any commands for the user to ask for ammo or health without a head set....BUT thats not important....Great stuff here...Me want to buy this game!

The backgrounds look like the Twilight Princess' and Metroid Prime's 1,2,and 3 environments mixed together made just for 1080p.
I've never played the first, might have to pick it up to get ready for this one.
Foetoid @ Oct 17th 2008 9:27AM
Wow, i never realised how similar the background art and general look of the game is similar to the Prime games, but obviously in a higher resolution. Thats not a dig at Gears, in fact its a compliment. Prime 1 and 2 are pretty well the best looking games of last-gen.
[playwhutyalike {C.E.P}] @ Oct 17th 2008 3:34PM
Ah, Foetoid gets it, I was complimenting the game.
I was going to write something along the lines of "your mom regrets not having that abortion/dad wishes his penis didn't work at the time" type response. As a lover of any game regardless of system, I'm just going to let your hate go and not waste another minute on it or think about it.
Ah, much better. Time for me to go get GOW at my local retailer.
[playwhutyalike {C.E.P}] @ Oct 18th 2008 12:42AM
That last comment was for the "hardcore" gamers who downvoted me, not at Foetoid.
Just wanted to clear that mess up.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 17th 2008 9:17AM
GOW2 Whore mode!
Had enough of killing? Have mad sex now!
BIGFAT @ Oct 17th 2008 9:23AM
why do you hate GOW?
Foetoid @ Oct 17th 2008 9:27AM
Someone threw a Gears 1 disk out of a building and it killed his whole family.
BIGFAT @ Oct 17th 2008 9:37AM
Did it slice them in half in a chainsaw on locast face fashion?
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 17th 2008 9:41AM
Whos hating? lmao, I love Gears, I was just thinking of an original mode :D
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 17th 2008 9:45AM
Oh yeah I forgot, Sex and gaming aren't supposed to go in the same sentance.
Will @ Oct 17th 2008 10:31AM
Someone threw Gears of War out a building?! What an asshole. I would've played it.
Ghostbuddy @ Oct 17th 2008 9:31AM
Honestly, who didn't think a survival mode would be an awesome idea for these kinds of games.
I remember a thread on Bungie.net that was trying to coinvince Bungie to add a survival mode into Halo 3. The thread was responded to hundreds of times. Eventually Bungie was actually asked by a fan site if they would add it. They said no, because it would take too much resources away from campaign.
I imagine now that EPIC had done this, and its as awesome as it always had the potential to be. Its not that crazy to think many developers will see Horde mode, and strive to replicate it.
russtophiles @ Oct 17th 2008 10:43AM
Horde mode is nothing new, particularly for Epic. The original Unreal Tournament had this very same mode (though obviously a bit more primitive). It's a really fun gametype though, since everyone playing is working together.
Cal @ Oct 17th 2008 1:10PM
I'm pretty sure everyone thought that a survival mode would be perfect for gears, or at least most the people I play gears with seemed to (pre-Horde announcement)
Premature ejaculation man @ Oct 17th 2008 8:25PM
Survival mode would have made Halo 3 the best =(
Thankfully we're getting it in Gow2 =) I'm sure I'll have to invent a drinking game for this type aswell ;p
umm....hello??? @ Oct 17th 2008 9:42AM
...can't wait for this game to come out!! just started DeadSpace last night--I'll have to finish it before November.
brian @ Oct 17th 2008 11:10AM
me too!
WRE @ Oct 17th 2008 11:23AM
Wait, I thought Dead Space got delayed a week. Is it out now? Where do you live?
umm....hello??? @ Oct 17th 2008 1:31PM
Chicago....DeadSpace isn't delayed, although ToysRUs's website incorrectly lists it as coming soon on Oct. 20th. But the local ToysRUs had it in stock last night, and BestBuy/CircuitCity/etc all have it as of tuesday or wednesday of this week...
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 17th 2008 9:43AM
Ahhh Gears 2, so close, yet so mother fricken far away...
:(
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 17th 2008 9:45AM
Tell me about it, I'm peeling my skin off with anticipation >.
BIGFAT @ Oct 17th 2008 9:58AM
i know, GOW is my favorite game of this gen, just because it said it would have all this stuff in it, and actually delivered on it.
i still remember how people said GOW would not be able to live up to the screen shots epic released, and then actually playing it and being blowed away by its graphics.
Arttemis @ Oct 17th 2008 10:15AM
Damn it. Ever since I've moved to my new apartment, my 360 in the living room has been internet-less.
Looks like I'm finally going to have to get a damn wifi adapter for however much they freaking cost...
and I don't think any other game on the horizon could have made me decide that!
Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 10:22AM
Arttemis, you can use a wireless bridge in lieu of the wifi adapter. Much cheaper..
SyChO @ Oct 17th 2008 11:28AM
"Arttemis, you can use a wireless bridge in lieu of the wifi adapter. Much cheaper.."
Hey, could you explain how that works please.
Thanks.

I need to steer clear of Gears news. Every time I read more, it makes me want to freeze myself "Cartman-style" until early November.
LuckyHaskins @ Oct 17th 2008 10:01AM
I may have been the only person in the world to enjoy the game "Serious Sam", but this reminds me of that game. Should be great with a team.
5th hot meal @ Oct 17th 2008 10:53AM
I thought serious sam was awesome, that was crazy the amount of enemies it used to throw at you, never have i been so gobsmacked by the madness that was srious sam.
SyChO @ Oct 17th 2008 11:29AM
Serious Sam was the shit!!!
Multiplayer with the boss/end maps was insaneeeeeeeeeeeeee!

"It seems that most games with standout multiplayer components have that one killer match type you'll spend more time with than all the others combined. With Gears of War 2, that distinction goes to the Horde mode."
Horde, Wingman, and Meatflag all sound ridiculously awesome, but you're kidding yourself if you think the core mode that most people spend the most time with will be anything but execution. At least those that plan on sticking to the game for longer than a month.

EXECUTION FTMFW!!!!!111
When this game comes out I will play it till my eyes bleed!!! True story! :D

Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 10:44AM
Haha, indeed, and then they have to run around with that flaming turd poking out of their ass for a second before they blow up.
DBoyFlex @ Oct 17th 2008 11:00AM
Holy shit I haven't played enough.
Sornos @ Oct 17th 2008 1:40PM
I registered just for this comment. I've been looking for the name or at least the movie from which the second song is from. The first is Requiem for a Tower (remix of the Requiem for a Dream theme) from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and the third is the Braid theme, but the second has been eluding me and teasing me for the last few months. You are my last hope. Help me, Obiwan Kenobi.
Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 1:46PM
It's from the soundtrack to Equilibrium, by Klaus Badelt.
There are several variations of the same tune on the soundtrack, the one I used in particular was track 10 - "Underground". "Evidence" and "Encounter" also sound similar.
Sornos @ Oct 17th 2008 2:09PM
Thanks man. I knew it was from a good action movie. I even searched Wikipedia back several years for all the action movie releases and checked their scores. Guess I didn't go back far enough. Got that demon off my back. Thanks a lot man.
Now, off into the gloom never to post again.
CaptainDbag @ Oct 17th 2008 10:13AM
Although the ability to continue from where you left off in a private game is nice and all (and probably will be very necessary to a lot of people wanting to get through all 50 levels, myself included), it kinda seems like cheating. I think if you're truly going to conquer horde mode, you should have to do it from start to finish.
Rollins @ Oct 17th 2008 10:21AM
Reminds me of UT2004's Invasion mode, except full of even more awesome.
Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 10:24AM
So how do continues work in horde mode when it's not all the same people that played together last time?
Like let's say 5 of you meet up, a couple of you played together to level 17, another guy left off on level 24, and a couple guys haven't played Horde yet. Where do you start?
Will @ Oct 17th 2008 10:34AM
Since continues are private matches only I'd assume it has to be all the same people throughout the levels
Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 10:46AM
Well, you can make private matches with more than just the same 5 people. There are about 50 people I play Gears with, so I wonder how that's going to work if it has to be the same 5.
I imagine I'll end up playing it with hundreds of combinations of different players over the years (all private matches), so is it going to remember "Ok when these 5 people last met up 3 weeks ago they were on level 18, so that's where they start", whereas if it's 4 of us the same and 1 different person we'd start on level 1 or whatever level that "group" left off on last time?
brother.rope @ Oct 17th 2008 10:41AM
yes!
jarhead906 @ Oct 17th 2008 10:59AM
Is this similar to RE4's Mercenaries mode but updated to t3h max?
Note: It's early and I'm too lazy to read the Hands-on. Being like RE4 is also a compliment.
AwesomeTown @ Oct 17th 2008 11:13AM
This is resonating so much Awesome.
Vcize @ Oct 17th 2008 11:17AM
Dude, the resonator didn't work.
