In preparation of the upcoming release of Neverland Card Battles for PSP, Yukes has sent out a brand new gameplay trailer of the game for PSP Fanboy readers. Keep in mind, this is based on an earlier PS2 game which never saw the light of day here in the States. While the localization effort appears strong, will it have what it takes to stand out in the crowded genre of the SRPG? Take a look for yourself.

Is it just me, or do card based games seem really lazy? Like the developers couldn't be buggered to make interesting graphics or play mechanics, so they just churned out some "cards" that do what you would otherwise want character sprites and cool effects on screen to do. They ought to just release a couple of decks and let you play the card game without needing the PSP.

It's just you. As with every other genre or type of game, it depends entirely on how well the base mechanic is executed.
I'm not a big card game fan in general, but there was one on PalmOS (yes, Palm PDA) that was freaking addictive as all hell called 'Knight Move'. It was basically like a board game ala Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders with overtones of Risk, but with confrontations handled via card monsters. Simple but totally fun to play.
This game looks quite polished and interesting - it's actually something I might pick up if/when I get a 3000 to replace my now sold-off 2000.

Oh, I agree it's all in the basic mechanics of the game system, but at the basic, basic level you've got what every game has - from pen and paper RPGs to tabletop war games to board games to console JRPGs to Super Mario - a rule set. And card-based games, in general, do seem like a lack of imagination in executing the rule sets in a game environment.
Of course, I just picked up a copy of Baten Kaitos, and so far the "card" system actually seems really freakin' cool.

The font looks too spaced out, a common mistake among fan translators, but not professionals
I notice the weird "scanline" effects when motions on screen are happening, I have never seen that.
Something about it just looks poor.

Hmm.. I'm not really into RPGs, but I loved Final Fantasy Tactics. I also played Metal Gear Acid 2(which is a card-based game), it was great. So, is this game any similar to them?
Also, that guy with the flame in the first picture looks like Kyo Kusanagi from the KOF.
