We return to the roots of Joystiq's WRUP series, celebrating one of the best examples of a "missing link" between handheld and home consoles. Nintendo's Virtual Boy wasn't exactly sure which one it was supposed to be; 13 years later, we're still not sure, either. Fun fact: Nintendo only shipped 800,000 of these worldwide. Compare that to the Nintendo DS' total sales of 2.41
gazillion units.
- Alexander Sliwinski: I've got my first WoW raid in almost eight months tonight. It's time to prep for WotLK and relearn my Paladin. Probably get a couple more CivRev achievements (still need conquer on Deity). Otherwise, patiently awaiting Fable 2's arrival on Tuesday. I tried Amazon's new "release day" shipping, so I'm curious to see if it works.
- Christopher Grant is turning Japanese-ah, I really think so. And truth be told, he's a very tall guy, so it might take awhile.
- Griffin McElroy: I am currently nearing the end of Evidence: The Last Ritual (In Memoriam 2 for European readers), which, I believe it's worth noting, is much more terrifying than that Dead Space title my cohorts seem so infatuated with. I would wager that the antagonist of their game doesn't send them e-mails informing them that they are waiting just outside their door, anxiously awaiting the chance to turn their skin into some sort of hat.
- Kevin Kelly: I'm jumping on the Dead Space bandwagon as well, and for some strange reason I started playing through the Halo 3 campaign again and I have no idea why. I'm also still trying to get the Bayonet for my Springfield Rifle in Call of Duty: World at War. Damn bolt-action gunplay!
- Kyle Orland:
- James Ransom-Wiley: With Dead Space put to rest (and the Phils just resting!), I'm clear to head out of town for the girlfriend's sister's law school family weekend -- that's right, folks, I'll be playing the new, WORLD EXCLUSIVE bonus content for the game of Life! In my absence, my best friend has volunteered to apartment-sit (a.k.a. shut himself in, pull the curtains, and finally sink into MGS4). Nothing quite like the first time, is there?
- Jason Dobson: Finishing cleaning up the creepy crawlies cluttering up the Ishimura this weekend, as well as putting the finishing details on my Halloween costume. But what will Jason be?
- Justin McElroy: OK, I think I'm finally going to crack open Dead Space. Also, I'm going to try to get some Warhammer Online. (Praag sever, Order side, I'm Amundsen, say "hi".)
- Ludwig Kietzmann: I've got a deadline to work with this weekend. With my copy of Dead Space arriving on Monday, I'll have to clear out my survival-horror plate -- meaning Silent Hill Homecoming -- before Sunday calls it quits. When I'm not immersing myself in a corroded iron nightmare, I'll be traipsing through the more cheerful lands of Vesperia. And when real-time combat grows tiresome, I've always got my turn-based fodder to fall back on in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
- Randy Nelson: I had been planning to scare myself silly playing Dead Space. Instead, I think I'll just do something silly in LittleBigPlanet. What? It's been delayed? But I have my boxed copy right here! Wow, this really is a rare gaming experience ... in more ways than one. [Ed. Note: All those in favor of beating Randy to a bloody pulp, say "I."]
- Ross Miller will be jumping back-and-forth between Dead Space and -- not to take as much heat as Randy LittleBigHalfNelson -- Fallout 3.

I need to pull my virtual boy out of the closet now.
NukeAssault @ Oct 17th 2008 7:10PM
Me too... MARIO TENNIS FTW!
syrik zero @ Oct 17th 2008 7:11PM
My friend had it. It was awesome! Besides the really uncomfortable position you had to be in to play it
Haggard @ Oct 17th 2008 7:50PM
And the eye strain.
Levi @ Oct 17th 2008 8:14PM
I literally broke mine out about two weeks ago, and it's sitting next to the couch, still plugged in.
On a different note, I'm making a sidescrolling platformer where you go into a Virtual Boy. It's actually a copy of the screen from Super Metroid, with the statue of Kraid, you have to get the high jump to get up there and walk into his mouth to get to the elevator... but instead, you walk into a VB...
kickass.
uh-oh polio @ Oct 17th 2008 7:19PM
wow, i havent seen the virtual boy for years. I might pull it out and get some tennis or get my wario on.
&rew @ Oct 17th 2008 7:22PM
Aye, Eye... damn I already ran out of ways to say I without actually saying I, I seem to have said it three times now, fuck.
tkAshur @ Oct 17th 2008 7:22PM
Teleroboxer, woot! Did anyone see Runaway Bride? Only reason I bring it up was the scene(I think in a hotel) where a guy puts a Virtual boy on his head and plays. Aside from the funny fact that he was going hardcore at the controller while the music for the "read the instruction manual" screen when you first turn it on was playing...how did he attach the system to his head? He straps the bugger on, did nintendo ever sell anything like that?
john paul @ Oct 17th 2008 7:31PM
Wow I clacked on that... Wish I hadn't
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Oct 17th 2008 7:32PM
I will be spending 24 hours gaming tomorrow for the Sarcastic Gamer Extra Life event. I'll blast though Battlefield Bad Company, finish Pure and play some more Burnout Paradise. Then once the US JPAG members come on, we'll be hitting up Halo3, CoD4 and Uno with the X3FFDF guys. And that's all in one day. God knows about the rest of the week.

Might get started on Mother 3, but I'll probably save that for programming lectures next week. Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are both on the way in the mail, but sadly they won't arrive til next week either. So I'm probably on cleanup this weekend, finishing up Castle Crashers, Baten Kaitos Origins, and B.Shock.
Oh and World of Goo. Bloody hell World of Goo. What. An. Incredible. Game. Everything changes in chapter 4.
Haggard @ Oct 17th 2008 7:51PM
You know what? That was actually the first time I'd seen it.
Worse than expected.
Haggard @ Oct 18th 2008 8:15AM
This doesn't really make sense anymore, so the above post was in reply to someone who posted tubgirl (now deleted)
Haggard @ Oct 17th 2008 7:52PM
Either do some Guild Wars quests to try and rekindle my love for it, some God of War, or more Mass Effect.
BigD145 @ Oct 17th 2008 8:07PM
Virtual Boy would actually be kinda neat for MMO's, if they didn't give you a headache within the first 15 minutes.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 17th 2008 8:22PM
I rented saints row 2 so I've been going crazy on that but I'll be spending most of my time trying to find a way to buy farcry 2 before it comes out or at least right after :(
Ciatrick Leodis McKelvin @ Oct 17th 2008 9:38PM
my local gamestop manager got a copy last week. Maybe find one of those guys and offer him something.
syrik zero @ Oct 17th 2008 8:25PM
My girlfriend watched it and she said it looked fake. But I'm still never going to see it.
To Haggard, your last line made me laugh haha
syrik zero @ Oct 17th 2008 8:26PM
Damn you Ross! You have Fallout 3 already? I'm much more jealous of that than anything else... When you're done you want to send it over? I'll pay shipping =D

Aside from my backlog, which now outnumbers my frontlog(?), I just jumped on the Toys 'R Us sale and picked up Dead Space, Star Wars TFU, and Pure. Also, I picked up Warhawk (finally!). So, yeah, big weekend on the PS3 side of things.
The Wii gets some love too, as I'm swimming through a World of Goo and dying repeatedly in Mega Man 9 (it hurts so good). Maybe I'll squeeze in some VC time as well, especially since I've never touched Secret of Mana.
Sadly, I need a moment of silence for my 360, as it Red Ringed on me last Saturday. =( I thought I was immune, I thought it would never get me...cherish your moment, 360ers, for life is precious. I patiently await my 360 - patiently, that is, until Gears 2 comes out. Then I'll be pissed!
If you're on PSN, hit me up! jorojoserojas

I could use some more PSN friends too... Syrik_Zero

i'll try to get a new girlfriend in gta4. i just found the sleep mode for the cell in that game, was it there and i just couldn't see it because of my old tv or does a certain mission unlock it? i might go pigeon hunting and i've met five random people out of six i think so it's time to see what i can get into without the phone calls.

Young_Nastyman @ Oct 17th 2008 9:29PM
I hate you Ross and Randy! Randy gets more hate considering my PC isn't built yet (just ordered all of the parts) and I won't be able to play Fallout 3 even when it does come out. The good news is I'll be able to afford Fable 2 now.

Well, my old Linksys wireless router finally arrived, and i have all of Fall Break to figure out if i didn't wind up bricking it long ago, or if its even compatible with my college's crazy network
With it's successful installation, Megaman 9 and Super Mario RPG will be on my horizon, if not, i'm still plugging through a replay of No More Heroes (Harvey Volodarskii tonight)

TheOverlord#2 @ Oct 17th 2008 11:31PM
I'll be playing a mix of World of Goo, Secret of Mana, and MoH H2.
Kizzle @ Oct 17th 2008 11:32PM
"nd for some strange reason I started playing through the Halo 3 campaign again and I have no idea why."
Probably because it's fun. With all the mindless hating 'tards around you'd think Halo 3 sucked or something. Nope.
Desert Eagle @ Oct 18th 2008 12:05AM
The funniest part of that picture is how the crotch is censored. For being a disgusting thing of a picture, at least there's something funny about it.
Also, what the hell? What happened to my Sue avatar?
Desert Eagle @ Oct 18th 2008 1:31AM
If my avatar doesn't give you guys a clue, I've been playing Cave Story again after 6 months of not playing it. I forgot how awesome this game was, it's a sin. Good Lord, how is it possible that someone is able to speedrun Hell in less than 3 minutes?!
Psalm Bowser @ Oct 18th 2008 6:19AM
Space Invaders Extreme, Feel the Magic, and Mario Golf 64.
And the Virtual Boy was a terrible console. How could anybody hold genuine nostalgia for that monstrosity.
