Blizzard's next MMO: Not World of Warcraft 2
We've seen "help wanted" ads coming from Blizzard for more than a year now, asking for developers to offer their services on a "Next-Gen MMO". Following the respective announcements of Starcraft II and Diablo III, however, the rumor mill stopped revolving on this particular topic. We expect prognostication to pick up following this recent revelation from Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime -- whatever the new project is, "it's not going to be a World of Warcraft sequel."
Not only will this news lift the spirits of those who can now rekindle their hopes for a Lost Vikings MMO, it should reassure Azerothians who may have feared that their MMO of choice might be replaced. According to Morhaime, Blizzard has no intentions of replacing their cash cow, hoping instead to create a new title that can operate alongside WoW. Our productivity shudders at this notion.

I'm guessing it's an MMO with the EVE online feature where you can gain skills while offline.
Ryoga Vee @ Oct 18th 2008 8:14PM
World of Starcraft...
theturtle363 @ Oct 18th 2008 8:40PM

Starcraft The A(something) Rebellion
Luke @ Dec 26th 2008 9:55PM
Yeah- Blizzard fussing over WoW too much. Starcraft rules!
Blizzard like WoW the most just because people pay for it.
Enough of this WoW crap!
Simon @ Oct 18th 2008 8:18PM
World of StarCraft does sound plausible, considering that it was rumored to replace StarCraft 2. But I'd bet my money on a Diablo MMORPG instead.
Ihavepants @ Oct 18th 2008 8:25PM
A Diablo MMO would conflict too much with the fan base playing Diablo 3. A Starcarft MMO however would cater for a completely different audience to the RTS.
Reboot @ Oct 18th 2008 9:11PM
Piggybacking off of ihavepants, but I think a Diablo MMO would be too similar to WoW, in that they're both in a fantasy setting.
At least a Starcraft MMO would be a new sci-fi setting.
bm @ Oct 19th 2008 5:45PM
Reboot took the words out of my mouth. How would a Diablo MMO possibly make sense, especially considering they said they don't want anything to replace WoW?
A game that can exist alongside it would only be a new futuristic franchise of some sort, or Starcraft. And guess which of those two any company would go with? Hint: not the one that doesn't have a huge existing fanbase highly anticipating an MMO based on it.
FSK405K @ Oct 18th 2008 9:00PM
WHEW!
World of Lost Vikings would be awesome but there's no possibly way they can invent enough puzzles. Puzzles require intense effort to create well, not like 'another hill, another monster, another quest'.
LaughingTarget @ Oct 18th 2008 9:32PM
They'd have to pull the map out from in-game if they do make it. Hard to get lost when you have a map.
mr nimblewick @ Oct 18th 2008 9:09PM
Rock 'n Roll Racing Online?
DM7000 @ Oct 18th 2008 9:20PM
I completely agree with this

Man I wish it were a brand new IP, but if I had to take a swag, I'd say it's Stacraft related.
Tom18230 @ Oct 18th 2008 9:52PM
I hope it isn't anything to do with Starcraft. Sure, blizzard has some great IPs but I'd like to see something completely different. A whole new world, story, characters etc. Nothing to do with wacraft, diablo or starcraft.
FSK405K @ Oct 19th 2008 4:20AM
How about if they were to do correctly all the things Richard Garriott promised for Tabula Rasa: a sci-fi-based, action-RPG, with instanced group quests, wouldn't rely on grind, etc.?
Foetoid @ Oct 18th 2008 10:02PM
I hope no-one at Blizzard is working on this. All available staff should be getting Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 finished ASAP!
iamronaldinho @ Oct 18th 2008 10:41PM
hows about they team up with infinity ward for a new MMO...Call of Duty:Modern Warfare(Continued...for 10 years)
Anticrawl @ Oct 19th 2008 12:44AM
There is NOTHING modern about the "warfare" in COD4. Not a damn thing except maybe the gun models. If anything it would be more suited for a WWII, which makes since because it's just COD2 with sprinting and a few gimmics. Nothing modern about running around chaoticly tossing grenades into the sky. Modern warfare has to deal with collateral damage, friendly fire, and is a great deal more conservative because we don't have the sheer number of meat puppets to toss at the enemy like we use to.
KeenCommander @ Oct 18th 2008 10:52PM
Seas of Lost Vikings?
Aww...come on, you know it would rock.
Spirit @ Oct 18th 2008 10:53PM
They said it'd be a new IP... so no new Rock and Roll Racing Online.
Ihavepants @ Oct 18th 2008 11:24PM
Where did they say this?
Ihavepants @ Oct 18th 2008 11:38PM
Oh man, I found it.
It won't be high fantasy and it most likely won't be set in space.
I actually _WANT_ a Galaxy of Starcaft.
Blazur @ Oct 18th 2008 11:44PM
Frankly, I don't give a damn what their next MMO is. With SC2 and D3, that ought to keep me plenty occupied for several years. And MMO's never interested me anyways.
Anticrawl @ Oct 19th 2008 12:46AM
If someone made a good MMO that didn't revolve around this lame fantasy genre MMO's have fell in love with I might be interested.
John @ Oct 19th 2008 4:09AM
you mean like Star Wars Galaxies, Tabula Rasa, EVE online, Planetside, The Agency, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, Champions online, Motor City Online, Neocron, Pirates of the burning sea, Pirates of the Caribbean online, Second Life.... Yeah, there are NO non fantasy MMOs out there.
The problem is almost every one of those are dead, dying, or cater to a niche audience. Whereas EQ, WOW, WAR, hell even DAOC were hugely successful.
Chances are you still wouldn't buy it if it wasn't fantasy themed
FSK405K @ Oct 19th 2008 4:23AM
John, those games: sucks balls, sucks, weird and clunky, dunno, dunno, are you kidding me, HE SHOULD LOOK INTO THAT ONE, dunno, dunno, dunno, overrated, sucks, not really an MMO.
Anticrawl @ Oct 19th 2008 6:11AM
Keyword here is GOOD. Could have saved you the hassle of typing all that up John.
GenBanks @ Oct 19th 2008 6:56AM
City of Heroes and Eve Online most definitely qualify as "good".
fraxyl @ Oct 19th 2008 7:32AM
What was bad about Tabula Rasa? I played it and it was kinda tough in places for me because I tend to go solo... which, yes, defeats the purpose of "MMO" anyway, I digress. I found it enjoyable. Except for one quest which frustrated the crap out of me, but it was quite satisfying to beat it.
John @ Oct 19th 2008 3:09PM
Galaxies was fucking awesome until they tried to turn it into a WOW Clone.
I would give my balls to have them relaunch a Pre-CU server.
John @ Oct 19th 2008 3:22PM
The problem is, what really makes the game "good"? I'd argue that WOW isn't really that good, it is just so easy that any moron can think they are teh awesome by just grinding. It all comes down to gear and who has been playing the longest.
I would be totally disinterested in it if my wife didn't play, but I'm not kidding myself that she'd never be into playing an MMO that's actually harder than hitting 2-3-4 really fast over and over again.
I mean I like WOW and all, it''s just that it's no Pre-CU SWG.
damien @ Oct 19th 2008 1:10AM
Ryoga Vee,
Ihavepants,
I like the idea, a "World of Star Craft" or a "Galaxy of Starcaft MMO" might be cool, unfortunately I don't play to many MMOs. At one time I played World Of Warcraft a lot, but I had to stop because I couldn't afford it. The monthly fee was killing him.
Young_Nastyman @ Oct 19th 2008 1:33AM
I'm going to go blindly into this with no proof whatsoever and hope Nintendo let them do a Pokemon MMO
FSK405K @ Oct 19th 2008 4:24AM
lol!
KylHu @ Oct 19th 2008 2:26AM
I hope it's not based on any of their current properties. MMOdifying (see what I did there?) something like Starcraft would pretty much mean the end of the plotline. At least Diablo was always about numbers... But I really don't want another medieval fantasy MMO.
FSK405K @ Oct 19th 2008 4:25AM
MMO-izing always works! I'm SO looking forward to World of Pac-Man!
KylHu @ Oct 19th 2008 5:24AM
"MMOrphing" also works.
fraxyl @ Oct 19th 2008 7:26AM
I... I see what you did there!
Y'know, it would be cool to see a Lost Vikings game where instead of controlling all three Vikings yourself, it's like co-op with other people like what Valve are doing with L4D but with less zombies and more vikings.
Maybe some sort of Viking / Portal crossover.
Vandell @ Oct 19th 2008 5:29AM
Guys. It's Nomad.
GenBanks @ Oct 19th 2008 6:54AM
World of The Sims of Warcraft
Combine the two most insanely best-selling games for PC into one. Next step: epic lewtz.
Haggard @ Oct 19th 2008 9:48AM
Well this is the thing - in order to make the same kind of money that they do off WoW, they need to make something that the masses will know is from 'the people who did WoW'.
So 'World of Starcraft' would sell like hotcakes but 'World of Lost Vikings' sounds like a really bad german RPG.
Xoviet chiK - Gyiyg Strikes Back @ Oct 19th 2008 1:02PM
I hope Activision-Blizzard kept one very special Sierra owned IP, they could put those Swingin' Ape Studios guys to work on something not super blizzardy...
Glitches in the System!
Sabi @ Oct 19th 2008 2:13PM
they should make a theme park...
a Blizzard theme park would be cool screw MMOs i'd go to the theme park...
wickedpheonix @ Oct 19th 2008 2:37PM
Take the "innovative" parts of EVE, i.e. training skills while offline and having everyone on the same, huge server, and make sure that you're not doing ANOTHER fantasy game. Then I might try it out...
...but oh wait what I just described IS EVE. Because EVE is awesome.
