Call of Duty producer hints at end to WWII games
Could Treyarch soon be joining Infinity Ward on the list of developers who've left World War II behind? Activision's senior producer on Call of Duty: World at War, Noah Heller, seems to be hinting at just that in a recent interview with the U.K.'s Official Xbox Magazine.
Heller said, "I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war. I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."
And yes, we know how ironic it is that we are, in fact, reading into the comment. So sue us.

Finally! Now bring back modern warfare! and maybe futuristic but not 100% keen on the futuristic one as other companies tend to do that better :D But who knows :D

LOL "And yes, we know how ironic it is that we are, in fact, reading into the comment. So sue us."

There are a lot of other settings before modern warfare (vietnam, korea, etc). We might still be running around with antiques for a while.
That being said, we could be looking at the future setting similar to a Tom Clancy type future... or treyarch could take things (like they do) to a silly level and we could see a laser gun battle... lets not go down that road
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 20th 2008 10:30AM
Great, even though I'm realy enjoying the COD: WaW beta. It's just really fun and it looks and sounds great to boot.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 20th 2008 10:32AM
Im all about Modern Warfare but PLEASE make some new weapons...If I use the damn M16 one more time I'm gonna shoot somebody with a Halo Rocket
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:32AM
I enjoyed using the M16. It was the M4 or forced AK47 useage that really got on my tits.
Also the fact that there was no real reason for the G3 to exist in singleplayer.
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 20th 2008 10:37AM
Thank the heavens for that ¬_¬
Bloody WW2 games are doing my head in now, its just the same old repeated story or patriotism. BORING!
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 20th 2008 10:38AM
And the funny thing is, they rarely present British war heros ¬_¬
Vcize @ Oct 20th 2008 10:59AM
Soap?
silverwolf761 @ Oct 20th 2008 11:05AM
Canadians never get anything more than a passing mention as well
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:33AM
Call of Duty has been way better to non-american soldiers than most games.
In medal of honor the most you saw of the British was that SAS guy in Allied Assault who got himself killed at the start of the second mission.
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 20th 2008 11:51AM
You know I would play another WWII if I could play as the Russians.
That would be awesome.
Well at least México gets an honorable mention in Brothers in Arms.Yes people,we were there too
(Allies)
Alex @ Oct 20th 2008 11:51AM
Yeah, I say BRING ON VIET NAM!
(Sorry in advance if that was inappropriate)
Maverick Saturn @ Oct 20th 2008 1:39PM
Lol, I find it hilarious how the British in some of these WW2 games are depicted as sitting back and having a cup of tea, fuck you American's you go fight, we will just sit here sipping our tea. We forght too! And yeah, what about canadians? And french? And Russians?
Oh wait, they were at the British houses sipping our Tetley tea as well. Silly me, how could I forget? :D

Call of Duty - Civil War FTW!!
Fernando Rocker @ Oct 20th 2008 10:44AM
That sounds interesting...
DonkeyBarf @ Oct 20th 2008 11:19AM
Yes, please make an American Civil War shooter! I propose the following highlights:
- Stand still in stand rank and file and watch your friends drop beside you!
- 3 minute reloading mini game!
- 1 in 30 chance to hit your target! Sometimes your musket will not even fire!
- Random infectious diseases!
- Build campfires in the wilderness!
D_Average @ Oct 20th 2008 11:22AM
Exactly!
Deeznuts420 @ Oct 20th 2008 11:25AM
YOU TOO CAN CATCH TYPHOID!
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:43AM
Featuring 10,000 vs 10,000 online play - no, that's not lag; the battles were really that slow.
Yourself @ Oct 20th 2008 1:01PM
The Civil War has a ton of potential for great games. What most people don't realize is that the Civil War wasn't "stand in line, shoot, reload for 2 minutes, shoot". While forces were still marched across battlefields, rarely would they face off in the old "chivalrous" fashion. In fact, most of the combat was done in close quarters with bayonets, swords, and revolvers. It seems like you could combine guerilla warfare and that type of melee combat for a solid game, but to my knowledge, no one has done it.
Charlie_Six @ Oct 20th 2008 11:44PM
I think a Civil War game would be great, if it could model what Yourself is talking about. I still think the movie "Glory" is one of the greatest movies of all time, and it features some of the coolest battles too. I believe the same director made The Last Samurai as well, which had similarly cool battles.
Plus, the game could (ethically or not) exploit not just the hundreds of thousands of real people who died in the war, but also exploit the current political situation of America, which has people bitterly divided into Republican and Democrat camps. And all those bigots who shout racist epithets in a Southern drawl while they play games? They'd now be considered RPers when they play on the Confederate side! Sweet.
Also, COD games have never been about realism like a Clancy game might be. They're more about Hollywood style action and heroics. So a Civil War game's weapons wouldn't have to be realistically inaccurate, or reload slowly. But the most key thing would be to feature deep bayonet combat. Oh, and cannons. I'd love to see cannonballs rolling into a huge battle :D

nobody has done WWII right sine the ORIGINAL Medal of Honor for PS1

I've played a shit ton of WWII games and my all time fav is Medal of Honor: Frontline (Xbox)

I thought the original CoD on the PC was absolutely incredible. After that, all the other WWII shooters just didn't live up to that for me, and I just got so bored with them.
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:43AM
Yeah, CoD1 is excellent.
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 20th 2008 11:53AM
European assault for the PC was really good,COD1 was also great.
Now my favorite MOH game is heroes for the PSP.
Travis @ Oct 20th 2008 5:01PM
I suppose those are all good too... I just can't find a game that let's me relive the awesomeness of the original MOH...the first time you whip out the fake ID...BAHAHAHAHAH
i do remember the glitch though, that always made them fall backwards...even when you shoot them in the back of the head...
Gurls Play Games 2 @ Oct 20th 2008 11:04AM
How about ending the first-person shooter genre instead.
mattimus @ Oct 20th 2008 1:43PM
umm, how about not?
Duke @ Oct 20th 2008 11:19AM
Yes, because you don't enjoy them. Nevermind the fact they drive the largest sales numbers.
VicViper09 @ Oct 20th 2008 11:47AM
I think we just need to slow down on FPS, theres no shortage of them, thats for god dam sure. Lots of em have rank up systems so you have to dedicate like 1600 hours before you get everything. WWII or not, i wish other gamers would get as much attention.
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:55AM
How about multiple genres of games can exist at the same time? This year I'm excited for Far Cry 2 and Left 4 Dead, but also for Little Big Planet, RB2 and GH:WT as well.
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 20th 2008 11:57AM
I think the popularity of the FPS genera is the only thing that keeps companies from switching to MMOs.
Although adventure games would be appreciated also is all about the games you play, I bought Intellivision lives yesterday and it kick ass,I found myself playing a intellivision game 2 hours. The lack of Burger time and Dungeons and dragons advanced nonetheless still disturbs me.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Oct 20th 2008 2:47PM
There is nothing wrong with FPSes, it's just that we don't often see anything brilliantly new in that area.
Number Six @ Oct 21st 2008 2:52PM
"I bought Intellivision lives yesterday and it kick ass,I found myself playing a intellivision game 2 hours."
B-17 Bomber is the best WWII game ever.
deadjesterx @ Oct 20th 2008 10:44AM
Took them long enough. Now they can do modern warfare and run that concept into the ground.
I'd be interesting if they tried out something like Vietnam or the Balkins region, though that last one is a little close to modern warfare I suppose.
wesley johnson @ Oct 20th 2008 10:57AM
I really think they need to investigate other wars for possible use. Imagine something like the Call of Duty: French and Indian War. Reloading muskets in the heat of battle whilst a Native American is poised to attack all in highly realistic HD graphics.
Sign me up, Billy.
Duke @ Oct 20th 2008 10:57AM
I wish the world cared more for the gamers and committed to WWIII so we could have some new game material. Damn selfish world!
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 20th 2008 11:19AM
Agreed.
John Z @ Oct 20th 2008 11:32AM
It's not for lack of trying, let me tell you...
Sam @ Oct 20th 2008 11:03AM
yeah I hope this is the last WWII game for a while, that way, when they make a nice one with next-gen technology it will be interesting and new.
unreal mccoy @ Oct 20th 2008 11:09AM
Something seems a little strange by referring to WWII as a "classic war" - like it's some kind of morbid term of endearment.
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 11:56AM
Remember that time 70 million people died? Classic!
Mr Khan @ Oct 20th 2008 12:42PM
Classic in the sense of conventional, Nation vs Nation wars that used to be the norm. Korea was pretty much the last of those. They are remembered as "better" wars because you knew who your enemy was and what they were fighting for, now its all about civil wars and insurgencies, bloody, messy affairs fought without honor, though not reaching that massive scale of human loss
Classic is appropriate
Haggard @ Oct 20th 2008 1:45PM
I see what you mean Mr Khan.
WW2 was really the last war where there was 'good versus evil' beyond reasonable doubt.
unreal mccoy @ Oct 20th 2008 8:19PM
Interestingly enough WWII is one of the only wars in history in which there is a clear, accepted good versus evil.
Dirty @ Oct 20th 2008 11:08AM
Yea seriously we need more barbie games and more MMOs.
Dirty @ Oct 20th 2008 11:10AM
