Could Treyarch soon be joining Infinity Ward on the list of developers who've left World War II behind? Activision's senior producer on Call of Duty: World at War, Noah Heller, seems to be hinting at just that in a recent interview with the U.K.'s Official Xbox Magazine.
Heller said, "I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war. I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."
And yes, we know how ironic it is that we are, in fact, reading into the comment. So sue us.

Finally! Now bring back modern warfare! and maybe futuristic but not 100% keen on the futuristic one as other companies tend to do that better :D But who knows :D

There are a lot of other settings before modern warfare (vietnam, korea, etc). We might still be running around with antiques for a while.
That being said, we could be looking at the future setting similar to a Tom Clancy type future... or treyarch could take things (like they do) to a silly level and we could see a laser gun battle... lets not go down that road

Lol, I find it hilarious how the British in some of these WW2 games are depicted as sitting back and having a cup of tea, fuck you American's you go fight, we will just sit here sipping our tea. We forght too! And yeah, what about canadians? And french? And Russians?
Oh wait, they were at the British houses sipping our Tetley tea as well. Silly me, how could I forget? :D

Yes, please make an American Civil War shooter! I propose the following highlights:
- Stand still in stand rank and file and watch your friends drop beside you!
- 3 minute reloading mini game!
- 1 in 30 chance to hit your target! Sometimes your musket will not even fire!
- Random infectious diseases!
- Build campfires in the wilderness!

The Civil War has a ton of potential for great games. What most people don't realize is that the Civil War wasn't "stand in line, shoot, reload for 2 minutes, shoot". While forces were still marched across battlefields, rarely would they face off in the old "chivalrous" fashion. In fact, most of the combat was done in close quarters with bayonets, swords, and revolvers. It seems like you could combine guerilla warfare and that type of melee combat for a solid game, but to my knowledge, no one has done it.

I think a Civil War game would be great, if it could model what Yourself is talking about. I still think the movie "Glory" is one of the greatest movies of all time, and it features some of the coolest battles too. I believe the same director made The Last Samurai as well, which had similarly cool battles.
Plus, the game could (ethically or not) exploit not just the hundreds of thousands of real people who died in the war, but also exploit the current political situation of America, which has people bitterly divided into Republican and Democrat camps. And all those bigots who shout racist epithets in a Southern drawl while they play games? They'd now be considered RPers when they play on the Confederate side! Sweet.
Also, COD games have never been about realism like a Clancy game might be. They're more about Hollywood style action and heroics. So a Civil War game's weapons wouldn't have to be realistically inaccurate, or reload slowly. But the most key thing would be to feature deep bayonet combat. Oh, and cannons. I'd love to see cannonballs rolling into a huge battle :D

I thought the original CoD on the PC was absolutely incredible. After that, all the other WWII shooters just didn't live up to that for me, and I just got so bored with them.

I think we just need to slow down on FPS, theres no shortage of them, thats for god dam sure. Lots of em have rank up systems so you have to dedicate like 1600 hours before you get everything. WWII or not, i wish other gamers would get as much attention.

I think the popularity of the FPS genera is the only thing that keeps companies from switching to MMOs.
Although adventure games would be appreciated also is all about the games you play, I bought Intellivision lives yesterday and it kick ass,I found myself playing a intellivision game 2 hours. The lack of Burger time and Dungeons and dragons advanced nonetheless still disturbs me.

There is nothing wrong with FPSes, it's just that we don't often see anything brilliantly new in that area.

Took them long enough. Now they can do modern warfare and run that concept into the ground.
I'd be interesting if they tried out something like Vietnam or the Balkins region, though that last one is a little close to modern warfare I suppose.

I really think they need to investigate other wars for possible use. Imagine something like the Call of Duty: French and Indian War. Reloading muskets in the heat of battle whilst a Native American is poised to attack all in highly realistic HD graphics.

Something seems a little strange by referring to WWII as a "classic war" - like it's some kind of morbid term of endearment.

Classic in the sense of conventional, Nation vs Nation wars that used to be the norm. Korea was pretty much the last of those. They are remembered as "better" wars because you knew who your enemy was and what they were fighting for, now its all about civil wars and insurgencies, bloody, messy affairs fought without honor, though not reaching that massive scale of human loss
Classic is appropriate

Interestingly enough WWII is one of the only wars in history in which there is a clear, accepted good versus evil.
