Could Treyarch soon be joining Infinity Ward on the list of developers who've left World War II behind? Activision's senior producer on Call of Duty: World at War, Noah Heller, seems to be hinting at just that in a recent interview with the U.K.'s Official Xbox Magazine.
Heller said, "I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war. I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."
And yes, we know how ironic it is that we are, in fact, reading into the comment. So sue us.

That's the fundamental flaw of the entire multiplayer of CoD.If you are to give out different weapons the higher the users level is, balance dictates that the starting weapons need to be strong enough to stand on their own so newcomers or prestigees(another retarded idea btw) don't get owned by lvl 99 with a BFG9000.
It doesn't work though as M-16 and AK-47 are so versatile you prefer to stick with them rather them use unlocks. But hey everybody starts with one.

They'll be back.
The thing about it is, the Second World War is one of the few "iconic" wars in history. There are clearly-defined "good guys" and "bad guys", and the war spanned so many different warfare types (air, land, naval, amphibious, etc.), so it's very tempting to use that setting for added realism. Put another way, if WW2 had never happened, and someone wrote it up today-- perfectly accurate to how it "would" have happened-- it would instantly be dismissed as bad military fiction.
Doing a war game for almost any other real war within the last thousand years (yes, I mean since 1008 C.E., including and ESPECIALLY the Crusades) has the problem of being far too politically charged. Who are the 'good guys' that the player controls/fights for? If you let the player control both sides of the conflict, do you gloss over the unpleasantries committed by both sides? What about weapon realism, propaganda, Unfortunate Implications Related To Race, and the like?
By no means do I want an end to war games: I personally like the idea of valor on the battlefield. Put simply, I like war games that are explicitly NOT based on reality (Advance Wars, Warhammer 40K, Starcraft, etc.), and think we need to see more of those.
But for 'real' war games, we'll be virtually fighting Normandy until World War V at the earliest.

I look forward to some games about some classic terrorist attacks, and a few all time classic genocides.
Oh, and some modern warfare games, cos we haven't had like A BILLION of those over the years...

WW3, please. I'd love to see a CoD FPS set in a World in Conflict/Red Dawn/Red Storm Rising-style shooting war between the US and USSR in the 1980s. Yeah, Operation Flashpoint does this, but it's more of a super-realistic battle simulation than a run-and-gun affair like CoD. The world needs more Cold War games.

Eh, they've still barely scratched the surface. I don't want to sound like i'm stating the obvious, but World War II was huge. Many of its components haven't even been tapped yet

Finally WW2 is ending. They said they'd be home by Christmas... 50 years ago.
Will there be a parade?

How about Korea? I don't know what the hell that war is about. They always seem to skip that in school.

I say they should attempt a Spanish American War game. Friendly fire would be the normal route to accomplishing your objective, contracting yellow fever while blowing up your boat. Fun stuff.
