Last Train to Clarksville was fun and all, but Daydream Believer should have been the Monkees Rock Band DLC song.

Justin is right, it's a real mishmash

But that's the point of the game, i suppose. A broad variety of styles and degrees of complexity

Some of the stuff popping up on YouTube is quite heartening, even after Matt from IGN tried his hardest to make the game look bad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KrPgcUcKyU&eurl=http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=2348

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk8zCd4i2CI&feature=related

Incredibly different takes, same song.

Wow, well that is kinda cool, and weird. Especially with the dogs and the cheerleader in the 2nd one. I might rent it at some point to give it a whirl I suppose.

This also makes Matt @ IGNs attempt at this game seem really, really pathetic. I don't know how he managed to suck at Wii Music, but mission accomplished.

It's not like all that variety is necessarily good. If you're too broad, you may appeal to everybody, but for only 10 minutes. Sure, everybody will find one song they like, but unlike other types of games (where you may enjoy playing a particular mini-game over and over and over again even if the rest of the game sucks), you can only replay a song so many times before you are done with it. But that's Nintendo's strategy, make a game people can play for 10 minutes and walk away from thinking they had a good time. Their market does not attempt to tackle the Endless Setlist.

I don't know that Wii Music is really a "game". It's more of a toy or a technical demo than an actual music game ala Rock band or Guitar Hero.

I bet this "game" outsells Far Cry 2 & Fable 2 ... possibly even combined.

Electroplankton wasn't a game either, I don't think we need to make harsh value judgments on anything that doesn't fall into the strictly 'game' category just for the sake of it. I mean I'm not likely to purchase this game at all, but simply because I'm not in the target market doesn't mean I'm up in arms over it.

Well, I believe this marks the first time the legendary Billy Joel appears on any music game (which is ashame considering his massive collections of pop hits and rock hits).

The Entertainer (and no, it's not the same Entertainer song the ice cream trucks play) is kind of an obscure song, coming off his third album as a solo artist and never appearing (to my knowledge) on any of his "greatest hits" ablums, but it's still a great song nonetheless.

As a result of this announcement, I'm for the first time interested in Wii Music, because someone in Nintendo has good taste in music...

Now, if only other music games would take advantadge of Billy's huge library, who wouldn't want to play: We Didn't Start the Fire, Uptown Girl, Only the Good Die Young, River of Dreams... well, you get the point

Unfortunately, the link Justin provides for "The Entertainer" goes to a youtube'd rendition of the Scott Joplin song (the one they play on the ice cream truck).

As much as I'd love to see some good Billy Joel in a music game, the fact that particular song contains the lyric "Played all kinds of palaces/ Laid all kinds of girls" would lead me to believe it is *not* a part of Wii Music.

"The Entertainer" is a part of his Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 collection (the cd is in my car right now :) ).

Wii Music reminds me of that invention exchange from MST3K where the Mads introduced "Public Domain Karaoke" featuring Baa Baa Black Sheep, Ave Maria, and the haunting "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."

...

Yeah, I know I'm old.

Oh, and Joystiq, please remove the link that is associated with "The Entertainer", that is not the Billy Joel version. This is a live version from the man himself which is a much better example:

it kind of starts 10 seconds into the song, but it's at least the right song...

This list might seem bizarre when compared to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but these are all pretty much method standards, except for the Nintendo tracks, of course. And since music education is the model upon which Wii Music is based, the list actually makes sense.

I really don't know what's upset me most about this shit. The fact that it even is allowed to exist or the fact that the Nintendo faithful will buy into it not matter what. As if that horrible embarrasing pitiful attempt to kill the Super Mario Theme on E3 was not enough to show how much this game sucks the set list should do it. Seriously by now I think NIntendo could do anything and put a NIntendo logo on it and it would still sell. Insane...

I guess this is is as close to become king Midas you can get without actually being him.

Ouch. Nintendo mis-represented the game, "sold it short" if you will. Reggie himself said that around the time of the media summit, that the game was better than they made it seem

The proof of that has been steadily appearing in the run-up to the release

I do believe they could have done more. (It's MIDI, they could have made the coolest free-form MIDI syntehsizer out there, but instead its limited to a remixer)

unlike you guys, most people know shit about the cool ways to use MIDI interfaces. Maybe you will understand when the user uploaded songs on Guitar Hero 4 start popping out and out of 3 million users there will be less than 1000 people with talent.

remember they want to sell this game, not keep it filling shelves on stores...

Honestly, how many people that bought wii fit STILL play it? I bet wii play still gets a spin, same with sports, but really, this is a game that people are going to play a few times then toss it aside. It takes absolutly NO SKILL unlike guitar hero. The dificulty makes it addictive. It will sell millions to the mindless non hardcore gamers, and the mindless hardcore nintendo fans. But i gurantee that they'll only play it for a month, max, then BAM! store credit.

I know ...

It seems thats the point of allot of this Wii stuff. It's not really a game (like Wii Fit) it is more of technical demos. There is not much on the console to play outside of the sparce first party offerings, port and occassional 3rd party games.

When Wii Fit dropped they all said "I've been meaning to get into shape anyway and this is a great way to track my weight".

I get that this stuff mostly appeals to the younger kids, parents and grandparents who just want to have some easy to play casual fun together. But, what astounds me is that the diehards still defend this stuff.

Nintendo should have a new phrase. Easy to learn but somewhat difficult to master.

I have a friend that always goes on and on about the "magic of Nintendo". I can understand that sentiment even though I generally disagree. I understand it because after I bought Little Big Planet yesterday and proceeded to play it I thought it was wymsical and magical. It reminded me of my favorite childrens book that had come to life. Maybe thats what some get from nintendo that I dont see.

Look, I'm not meaning to go to bat for WiiFit here, I'm really not. If I were to buy it, I'd likely be in the category of people who treated it as a novelty; played for a little, didn't touch it again. However to say it takes no skill makes it clear you probably haven't played the game for over 5 minutes, if at all. I know you're likelyy to recoil in the horror at mention of 'minigames' (ooooh they're ruining the gaming industry!) but many of them do require skill.

Astonished that diehards still defend this stuff? Maybe some people like and can find lasting enjoyment in stuff that you don't. Deal with it. It's not an affront to you or the HARDCORE GAMING INDUSTRY, it just is what it is, and it's not ruining things for the rest of us.

I am dealing with it. You need to deal with the fact people have different opinions than yourself.

Markez said....

"However to say it takes no skill makes it clear you probably haven't played the game for over 5 minutes, if at all."

Listen up, I never said anything to that effect. In fact my exact phrase was ...

"Easy to learn but somewhat difficult to master".

I never said it didn't take skill. In fact, you made that up out of thin air. As far as I know Wii Fit isn't even a game! It's a piece of exercise equipment, workout modes and weight tracker. I said nothing about the balance board in particular.

Are you high on drugs? I said that I know who the target demographics of Wii Music and Wii Fit are (the younger kids, parents and grandparents who just want to have some easy to play casual fun together). How is this even up for debate? Look at the marketing campaign of WIi music and the packaging of Wii Fit. Am I not allowed to be astounded by something without you putting your idiotic drama queen theory about how mini game are ruining the industry? Get over yourself.

The truth is it does astound me that Wii gamers on this site would actually defend the validity that Wii Music and Wii Fit are actual games. I'm not talking about the 12 year old in Best Buy or the soccer mom astounded by the device.

The way you put it Wii Music is going to contend with Rock Band and Guitar Hero for rhythm game supremacy.

Why you feel the need to put on your detective cap and use deductive reasoning is beyond me. You were way off base and are making an issue where there is none. In reality you had put a tin foil cap on instead of a sleuth cap.

This is a blog and people are going to have different ***wait for it*** OPINIONS than you. Deal with it without being a little baby.

Wow, good lord. Summer, Donna.

"Listen up, I never said anything to that effect. In fact my exact phrase was ..." The reference to the 5 minute comment was towards the original poster, the one you were initially replying to as well. I didn't mean to imply you were the one saying it took no skill, my bad there, sorry I wasn't more specific. Again, the 'no skill' thing, wasn't made up out of thin air, check the original post.

"Am I not allowed to be astounded by something without you putting your idiotic drama queen theory about how mini game are ruining the industry? Get over yourself." I never suggested you weren't allowed to be astounded, I also never suggested minigames were ruining the industry. That's fine you're astounded with people considered WiiFit/Wii Music as actual games. Earlier in the thread I compared Wii Music to Elektroplankton, also not a game in the traditional sense at all. I do like calling it the idiotic drama queen theory, however, nice.

Am I high on drugs? No, gave that up ages and ages ago.

"The way you put it Wii Music is going to contend with Rock Band and Guitar Hero for rhythm game supremacy." This one is really out of left field, don't know where you came up with this. I use the word novelty, and non-game in referring to both.

"This is a blog and people are going to have different ***wait for it*** OPINIONS than you. Deal with it without being a little baby." Couldn't agree with you more here.

I actually am always wearing the detective cap, so that's kind of a non-issue. And I think that's the 2nd tinfoil hat reference I've seen here in a month, and I wish people would stop reminding me of Kindegarten Cop.

Kindergarten cop for the win. Only rivaled by Cop and 1/2 starring Burt Reynolds. I still remember the license plate number NGB 72G.

I don't see why you get in such a frenzy and make these crazy sensationalist claims. I know why ... because its your precious Wii.

Anyway ... enjoying some QT with Little Big Planet and let me just say it is more amazing than advertised. I don't like to throw this out lightly but it is the greatest game of all time.

You picked up Wario Land Shake It? If you haven't you need to do so -- yesterday. All though it was extremely short I thought it was the best Wii game to date. Hands down better than Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart and Brawl.

Just throwing this out there -- no reason

My holiday gaming purchases have been as follows

Wario Shake It
Dead Space
Socom Confrontation
Little Big Planet (GOTY Hands Down)
Pure
Rock Band 2

Gears 2 pre-ordered
Far Cry 2 pre-ordered

I get 1 more after that ... trying to decide between Left 4 dead, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Midnight Club LA & Motorstorm Pacific Rift ... leaning towards Fallout 3 for now ... who knows what sleepers will come as well ... Legendary or J&The Argonauts

Sorry, I didn't reply to u sooner, I was in my night class.
Being that I am a gamestop store manager that did play wii music last month at our conference in vegas, i'd say I have more say than you. And trust me, there is NO SKILL required. All you do is wave your hands around. Seriously thats it! And no, the wii isn't just mini games, I agree. Its also made up of ports, awful new IP's, rehashes, re attempts at bad IP's and a few great nintendo brand titles (which is the ONLY reason a nintendo fan owns a wii.) I like many others love the wii for smash, galaxy, kart, metroid, zelda, etc.But lets face it, this is going to end up like wii fit and wii play. Wii sports is slightly redeemable cause its the only thing people who have never played wii want to try or cause its one of the only decent multiplayer games. Go ahead, say im wrong.BTW, what do u think guitar hero is? Its a big mini game! Think about it, it is, and yes it requires skill.

Johnny, I think your alot like me, u like a very broad spectrum of games and def appreciate the classics. Im sure, also, like me, you dont use ur wii much. lol

ANd btw, LBP is amazing in every way. Its like sony, unlike nintendo, listend to the fans and sad "we're not original huh?" and then gave us an originality bitch slap of love! lol.

Nah, in regards to the no skill thing I meant moreso some of those pesky WiiFit mini-games. They're few and far between, but I'd say there's a couple that require some skill. Not saying the hula hoop bit does though fer gadssakes.

Not arguing with ya on the Wii Music thing, though. My only issue is I wonder if Cassamassina was trying to sound like utter and complete ass on it. The clip he had attached to his hands-on / review was truly pitiful.

I just moved and no longer have an HD TV to connect my 360 to, and it just doesn't seem right to hook it up to a regular ol' TV, it really, really doesn't. I'm not playing much, but lately when I do it is indeed on the Wii. Yes, it's mostly for Nintendo games, and a small handful of good 3rd party games.

Daydream Believer? Sold.

I've got nearly all the Rock Band DLC and all the Guitar Hero games and I absolutely love the Wii music setlist. Can you imagine the epic awesomeness if you pulled out Eine Kleine Nachtmusik during a random set list in Rock Band? I'd settle for The Rutles and their song Eine Kleine Middle Class Music for the "it's not Rock so it doesn't belong in Rock Band, but metal does because I say so, hush you and your logic" purists.

/pines for Harpsichord, Banjo and Slide Guitar Hero
/should buy the t-shirts to show his support
