Microsoft has patented an audio censoring technology with obvious application to Xbox Live. The patent covers real-time and batch analysis of audio data streams with the ability to render "undesired" words or phrases unintelligible or inaudible. Can you imagine if this power falls into the wrong hands?
The process allegedly uses sophisticated comparisons of phonemes, the little building blocks of language. Our guess: What you thought was last year's harmless flu shot was actually a nanomachine injection, obviously. Just don't be surprised when you fire up Xbox Live a few months from now to the sound of tweens screaming: La-li-lu-le-lo!

Yikes, the future of censorship is here
Very strict controls will have to be kept on what phrases are banned, otherwise the government (or other governments) could get ideas

Haha, I made it on joystiq again! Am I the only person on flickr that posted an image of himself yelling into an Xbox microphone? ;)

Most of these systems are worthless. They either censor the wrong things, or clog up the data stream causing voice chat lag or making the low quality of the chat even more garbled.
Solution: play with friends and people you know, not random assholes.

In other words just get rid of ranked games and online achievements, they are annoying as hell and most people would rather cheat them.
(All my achievements are legit tho')
Now that I dunno why people need to cheat achievements such as "It came from Behind" or "Double,Double kill" since they are easy as pie.
I was in an achievement match today and since I had this awful lag I decided for once to cooperate instead of you know spam stickies although they let me get an overkill on them which unlocked nothing but it made me feel better. The sad part I didn't get an achievement because I already got most of them.
One day “2 4 1” will be mine legit.

I suppose this doesn't filter languages other than English?
What about people with accents? What about people who pretend to have an accent?
The effort will probably be welcomed by parents, but, considering all variables, it just seems futile.

I'd actually love it if everyone on XBox live could only swear if they did it while sounding like John Cleese doing his "old British woman" voice.

They should just rickroll anyone who says a bad word.

Instead of blurring the words, why don't they count the potential curse words?
So when a customer places a review for bad sportsmanship, the system compares it to the potential swear log as evidence that they do not play in a manner that is fun for everyone?

Thus, the mighty boot of Micorosft lands on that user's face and maybe their LIVE account too.

Next you know, Sony, PS3 and the phrase "better that XBOX360" will also be included in this mandatory censor pack.
In doing this, Microsoft will be the largest corporation to incourage the use of internet lingo and/or other languages.

"The patent covers real-time and batch analysis of audio data streams with the ability to render "undesired" words or phrases unintelligible or inaudible."
Would saying "PS3" be considered undesirable?
OK, bad joke aside, I hope you can turn that shit off or have it optional in the 'parental control' area of the OS - I normally only play with my adult friends and I like to say things the way I fucking say them! We like to curse! Them's the facts. I will not enjoy hearing garbled streams. I doubt the system will be able to keep up with the users - inflection, pronunciation, and even new slang using existing words is going make this annoying. Like Chase said above, "considering all variables, it just seems futile."
Introducing something like this software into the chain of events on existing hardware will almost certainly add a latency to the audio communication timing, despite being described as 'real time.' Simply put, that's a huge amount of processing that needs to be done if you're listening in on everyone.
I think a realistic implementation of this would be that if you get reported as being offensive, you'll be put on a probation where the MS Big Brother Machine listens to you, and modifies your speech for you if you won't do it yourself.
Besides, I think the U.S government already holds this patent with the Patriot Act...

Everything about this truly seems a nightmare. If a game is rated M, it shouldn't be censoring speech. And there's also that disclaimer on every online-capable game: "Online play is not rated by the ESRB." I don't see the need for this at all. If parents are that concerned about their children's exposure to "bad words," they just shouldn't let them play online games. And lock them in a box.

So they've finally achieved real time battlefield control?
Console control... behavior control... language control... everything is monitored and kept under control.

Are we all going to have to speak the Queen's English all proper and like?
I'm wondering how they are going to deal with Patton Oswald speaking his G-Rated Filth.
"When Captain Frosty gets done with your hairy bingle-bangle, it's gonna look like a rat in a rainstorm when it's covered in my love paint!"

...Well,i am NEVER a fan of "censorship",but i AM a fan of being less pissed off while trying to have some fun... ...you can disagree with this tactic, but don't go blaming microsoft so quickly, the "blame" lays flat out on the IDIOTS too stupid to come up with ANY creative insults WHAT SO EVER,turning XBL into a barrage of N*gg*r and F*g 24/7...Of course they COULD also just start massively banning accounts obviously used by KIDS playing Mature games...that would be a refreshing experience ;-)... But,no matter "the answer",we ALL KNOW there is a problem...

I love how all these Xbox 360 people think this technology is real, but it's really based on a game they've never heard of or will ever see on Xbox (no Blu-ray, duh!). ROFL MGS rocks! Best game ever, period.
