I personally loved Star Ocean 2, and still have it for original Playstation. This game may not be the best by today's standards, but I still can't wait to see what came before SO2.

I am pleasantly surprised by the fairness of this review: there's room for reminiscing over the nostalgia factor of it, it takes the good points and mentions them, and is honest about the bad points - tackling this review by today's standards, rather than let nostalgia take over the job. Color me impressed.

That said, I will be picking this one up, if nothing else, to review on the show. I hated Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time myself, and while this battle system reminds me *a lot* of Tales of Legendia and such - that being a great thing -, I still feel a bit sore towards the franchise in general.

Great review. Looks like I may need to pick this one up. Just tell me, is the game a bit too JRPG-y? (Take for example, the ending of Crisis Core which I found to be INCREDIBLY cheesy). If it is, then I may not opt to pick it up. Unless the battle system is really that good.

Slight correction to the article - purists can (and usually will) be offended by anything, whether real or perceived.

Been playing the game a little while and I really like it... it's like the original Star Ocean 2, as far as graphics, menus, and so forth, but with cutscenes and voicing. Nice.

To the guy who asked if it's too JRPG'y... yes, it is.

One funny thing is you get to change your character's name, but he's still referred to as Roddick in all the cutscenes and voiced parts. So really, there's no point to changing his name, which makes me wonder why they didn't just hardcode the names in standard casing (they use all-upper).

Nothing better than the random tourette's greeting of "Hey, DRUNK, what do you want to do today?" where "DRUNK" is pronounced like "RODDICK".

Oh well. Other than that slight oddity, I'll be enjoying the game for a while... hopefully off and on till Persona 4 comes out.

Hashbrown Hunter: Keep in mind, Crisis Core was pretty much released as fan-service. Of course it was gonna have a yaio heavy ending! The rest of the game was stellar, though, if you ask me.

Can't wait for the return of the ATB system in FF XIII Agito.

Sprites still look like crap to me, specially when scaling effects are used. Guess I'll wait and rent it before I make any purchase decisions.

And yeah, I know the game's supposed to be a little old-school, but honestly, I'm a little tired of PS1-looking RPGs. I want JRPGs that look and play according to the PSPs power.

It may be a remake of an old snes game with cliche storyline but DS has got remake of Dragon Quest 4, which is a game from nes and it also has a cliche storyline - basically there is a bad dude and you have to kill him, because he's bad. And DQ 4 got 8/10 in most reviews. So hmm, I guess that people have different expectations from both systems ?. For me SO:TFD looks more promising than DQ 4. Definitely going to get it.
