In an interview with Channel 4, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto -- currently promoting Wii Music -- lamented the current use of violence in gaming. "I don't want to curb freedom of expression but I am concerned that many developers focus just on excessive violence in order to stimulate people's mind," he said. "I believe that there are more ways of grabbing players' attention than violence alone."
Miyamoto also discussed cheaper hardware, noting, "Nintendo's mission is to improve and to take advantage of cheap technology to create reasonable and affordable entertainment." ... Nintendo against excessive violence? In love with cheap technology? Breaking news! Why doesn't Miyamoto put his money where his mouth is? Oh, nevermind.
Though we've rarely seen in a suit, Miyamoto's opinion goes a long way in shaping Nintendo's business philosophies. If there's one thing to take from this, it's that you shouldn't get your hopes up for a high-powered Wii 2.0.

Seconded Vegeta. Now I'm not saying that these games are trash (I do enjoy my rounds of CoD4, among other shooters), but its just that it seems that developers focus more on this aspect rather than something else.
Makes gaming very boring if you release a violence laded game every week.

Maybe you need a hearing aid pal, I can understand him.
I have always find such comments as “you should speak American” and stuff pretty retarded considering that most people in the world speak English since is an obligatory subject in most educational systems is just the accent that gets in the way.
Also that people who commonly says stuff like this are no ones that rather say everyone should speak English than you know bother on learning another language, I for one rather learn multiple languages (Also that it makes you sound cool and studies prove that it actually improves your intelligence) Now that according to another study no one can be perfectly bilingual since even professional translators need an extra 1 or 2 seconds to figure out what people just said in another language.
Finally I just want to point out that the English spoken in the U.S is sometimes confusing compared to the English spoken in the U.K.
Just my 2 cents.

While Miyamoto surely is someone who rides along for the show in a manner somewhat similar to a mascot for Nintendo, I doubt that he has to do a lot of face-to-face public relations work with the international business community.
He's just a person comfortable enough to be a software designer.

Yes, obviously everyone should either purchase or rent a game before forming any opinion on whether or not they want to drop their cash on it.
Or, for those of us that aren't made out of money and don't have to do anything but play videogames for a living, we can use previews, hands-on impressions, etc to widdle that down to the select few that interest us enough to actually try.

I don't know. Unless they've got another innovation lined up on par with the Wii remote (and they've been hinting they don't) they're not going to get away with foisting last-gen hardware on us again. Sony and Microsoft are both going to have full motion controls next round, you can count on it.

David Black, if that's the case, then why release a new console at all? If the casuals don't care at all about graphics, why wouldn't they just be happy to keep playing the Wii?
The 360 is now cheaper than the Wii, and far more powerful. Do you think the Wii's continued dominance is just because of Nintendo's brand name? Hell no. People, casuals and non-casuals, have overlooked the Wii's hardware limitations because of its innovation -- and to a lesser extent, its branding and price (the latter obviously no longer being a factor).
Next generation, Sony and Microsoft are very likely going to release very powerful machines with motion controls that top the Wii's, and they're going to sell them at a loss. In the absence of some new gameplay breakthrough or something else to differentiate the machine, an underpowered Wii 2 is going to be ignored. Think of the Gamecube, if it had N64-era hardware.
And to those who think there aren't still major graphical and other technical leaps to be made by consoles, let me assure you -- the real leaps haven't even begun yet.

I'd like to know when Miyamoto is going to pressure Nintendo into offering "cheap" technology for all.
I'm really dumbfounded that the HD graphics intensive 360 can achieve a price fifty dollars less than the Wii. The Wii, by nature, should ALWAYS be cheaper than the other two consoles.

I agree with you, something with about 4.5x the CPU power and 5x the RAM really shouldn't cost less than its competition, even without any form of storage
But you have to admit it would be beyond idiotic for Nintendo to drop the price now, not unless they were in for a serious production boost.

Pricing fundamentals:
Charge what the market will bear.
The X360 price drop had next to nothing to do with the cost of production. It was a marketing decision. Granted, production brought costs down enough to drop it, but they would never have done so without a reason. There's no reason for Nintendo to drop the Wii's price until there's a real sales drop-off.

The jump from PS3 to PS4 and from 360 to NextBox is going to seem pitiful by comparison to the jump from PS2 to PS3 and Xbox to 360, so you shouldn't be betting on a comparatively high-powered anything next time around
This little quantum leap was a 1-time deal, at least for the foreseeable future. Wii 2 will make that jump into the ballpark now that its nice and safe to do so, and that will be the last of the truly drastic hardware leaps.
However, his views explain my tastes quite well. I rarely like violence for its own sake, unless its something ridiculously over-the-top like Ninja Gaiden 2 or MadWorld. I primarily want fun games, and that enjoyment should always come first, though not at the expense of other factors.

But to be fair you are a self professed Nintendo fanboy. If the video game is about war its pretty hard to do a realistic depiction without violence.
I would like some examples of games that are violent just for the sake of being violent in your opinion.
The one thing I can akin what Myamoto is saying is to the saw movies. In my opinion that is simply violence for fans of gore - not horror. Horror doesn't have to have outlandish gore to be scary. In fact, its usually the suspense that makes it scary as opposed to violence.
The movie No Country For Old Men was a terrific movie that was very suspensful and used gore properly IMO.
There is also a caveat that needs to be mentioned. In general, Nintendo doesn't make games for adults only. They make games for everyone in mind. Its the formula they have always stuck to from the start.
It's difficult for me to understand how you can say the over the top violence in madworld is OK but other games are not. That seems like violence just for the sake of violence. It's a game about a murderous gameshow. That seems like exactly what Miyamoto is talking about.
It's an interesting theory you have about the next gen consoles in respect to the leap in power. But, it's just a theory. It seems that it would make you feel better if the next gen consoles did what Nintendo did with the Wii. I don't see it happening like that. By the time the next gen consoles are released both the PS3 & 360 will be huge leaps in technology just like the current iterations were.
In all honesty I don't see the next Nintendo console being much stronger under the hood than the current PS3 & 360. But, thats probably OK for Nintendo because the majority if their games are not processor intensive or hardware pushers. In fact, that will probably be more than adequate.
Games don't have to be violent to be enjoyable. Viva Pinata, Banjo kazooie & ratchet and Clank are all examples. The best example perhaps (outside of Nintendo) is Little Big Planet. It's the most fun I have ever had playing a video games and there is nothing violent to speak of.
It's possible to make games like LBP that appeal to everyone without having them be underpowered.

He didn't say other games are not OK. He said he was OK with over the top violence and mentioned MW and Ninja Gaiden.
Personally, I would actually prefer it if MadWorld wasn't as violent as it is. I'm confident that it would be just as fun without the bloodbath...but I'm familiar with what we've been told to expect from a gameplay and mechanics perspective, so I can overlook that.
I also think he's right about xbox3 and PS4 being significantly underpowered. We've already heard fairly credible rumors about what to expect or features in the next consoles. Those certainly suggest that the jump in power will be more akin to GC>Wii, as opposed to PS2>PS3.
They'd have to be crazy to sell hardware at a loss again after seeing the Wii crush them.

Rumors are rumors. Plenty of credible rumors have been debunked. 360 to have a blu-ray drive and Nintendo to release a HDD comes to mind.
If it happens then so be it but I don't think the next 360 & PS console are going to be only say double the power like the relation of the GC to Wii. The complexity and ability of both architectures will be vastly improved and production cost will be much cheaper.
I hope the next Wii iteration is more than just say Wii HD. Nintendo could benefit from comprable console specs as the other two. Imagine if the Wii were capable of handling most of the current multiplatform titles without a loss of quality. Then there would be no need for Wii owners to purchase a 360 or PS3.
I still think madworld is the exact definition of what Miyamoto is talking about. The game is nothing more than pointless and mindless gore and violence. It's essentially Sin City the game.
I don't have an issue with it - in fact it looks damn fun. But, thats the exact game Miyamoto is talking about in the article. Just because it is on the Wii and looks "fun" doesn't mean that it's any different than the gore in Gears of War or Mortal Kombat.
I am good with games that aren't violent. I do wish that the Wii would serve up more games like Madworld in the future. If for every mario & friends game they had something along the lines of Madworld or The Conduit the system wouldn't have such harsh criticism from gamers who like mature content.

The jump from PS2 to PS3 is overrated.
The jump from PSX to PS2 allowed improved game-play, but so far the jump from PS2 to PS3 has had no effect on gameplay. Almost every PS3 game could have been made on the PS2 with crappier graphics.
The jump from GC to Wii was much more significant than the jump from PS2 to PS3, because it enabled new game-play. The change in game-play from controller to motion is as significant as the change in game-play from 2D to 3D graphics.
But just like the 3D graphics on the PSX were too limited to enable all the game-play people wanted in 3D, the Wii's controller is too limited to enable all game-play people want in motion (e.g. 1:1 light-saber). Therefore a Wii2 may be to the Wii like a PS2 is to a PSX - improvement that affects game-play. While the PS3 is just improvement for eye-candy.

Yeah because the PS2 is super capable of using a 6 axis control scheme. Funny thing about the Wii is that most of the first party games play better without the wii mote and nunchuck. Now they have to sell you another add on (motion plus) to get the controls to an alleged "1:1".
Graphics
Physics
Online Infrastructure
Controls
... are all part of the natural progression of a console. It's not solely about TEH CONTRULZ HAS TEH WAGGLEZ. Your theory is bunk because the PS2 is not capable of the same physics and amount of on screen objects at any given time. And the kicker ... the PS2 can't do 4-D!

- The PS3's motion controls are barely used.
- LittleBigPlanet is probably the first game to use physics that the PS2 wasn't capable of, in a way that affects game-play. Most of the PS3's improvements in physics have been particle physics - like the debris in Resistance - that have little to no effect on game-play.
- PS2 games like GTA: San Andreas had large and complex environments, so the system was capable of rendering enough objects for the game-play. That's the difference between the PS1 and PS2 - the PS1 couldn't handle that kind of game-world, but the PS2 could. The game-worlds we're seeing on the PS3 aren't significantly different than the game-worlds on the PS2, they are just prettier.

Textures in a lot of 360/PS3 games are pretty bad, effects have to be turned down and there's often no anti-aliasing. Plus a lot are rendered in 600/720p, nowhere near the 1080p that was originally promised.
Whether you think that the improvement will be drastic or not, there are very obvious areas in which consoles can get better. For instance, the next gen should have no problem rendering Crysis at 1080p, 4xAA on Very High. And that looks shit-hot, blows Uncharted out of the water.
