Looks like someone snuck in ahead of everyone else! Don't even pretend you're surprised. Before today's LucasArts and BioWare press conference, IGN and Gamespot let slip Star Wars: The Old Republic -- you know, the MMO based on BioWare's massively successful Knights of the Old Republic series whose name was trademarked back in July.
What we know so far: The project originated just after KOTOR II launched in 2005. SW:TOR is reportedly the reason Electronic Arts paid $860 million to purchase BioWare and Pandemic. The MMO takes place 300 years after the first KOTOR II, which puts it about 3,500 years before the film.
You can choose between two factions, the Galactic Republic or the re-energized Sith Empire. You can also align yourself as a Dark or Light Side character in either situation. Two classes have been revealed: Jedi and Sith, both of which can use lightsabers and the Force early on. No release date, and no word on console releases.
We also happened to see the name printed on t-shirts worn by BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk. Meanwhile, the official press conference is about to begin. Here's hoping the game has better luck than Star Wars Galaxies!

B.S. the wait is over. KOTOR 3 this is not. I would only play this if it were subscription free like Guild Wars, but with EA money bags invested we all know that won't happen. Damn! It seems like I may have to live my real life again...

Very disappointing news. Like everyone else here I despise MMOs. I don't see why they can't give us KOTOR 3 along with the MMO. Also, the whole kotor story arc was never resolved when kotor II ended with a craptastic cliff hanger. Its impossible for an MMO to bring any sort of closure to the series.

KOTOR better not have SecuROM on it.....
If not then this'd be my first MMO. Kotor was the first RPG I got addicted to. And I love Star Wars.

i think the knights of the old republic is one of the best eras for star wars. it has a lot of great compelling stories, and characters that you can adapt to. i hope the the KOTOR mmo will bring us the game play of of the first single player rpg, and maybe the earlier game play style of SWG before all of the bull crap. the downfall of SWG was the accessibility of Jedi/Sith from character generation. in my opinion i pray to god that the cartoonie character art is just a phase for companies because it is getting quite old

I will not pick this or any other lucas arts or bioware title ever again. they have slapped us all in the face by fundamentally changing the most anticipated sequel ever. what about reven? does this mean I need to spend 3k on a new computer? and learn how to play on a computer? does this mean I will have to pay a subscription fee? does this mean I have to depend on other people to "get together" so we can play in groups? sounds like they dont like making money. more people bought the original xbox to play the great star wars titles than ever signed up for galaxies. sorry but I for one hate mmorpg's and always liked the style of KOTOR without it being online. this will be galaxies. prepare for cheats, and glitches, and buying a new computer. nice work jagoffz

An MMO?!?! Here I was and many other KOTOR fans waiting for a KOTOR 3 and what does BioWare give us? An unwanted MMO. I feel like I have just been kicked in the butt. If this game has single player story mode, if it will be released on consoles and if I don't have to pay a game subscription fee, then I will buy the game. But since EA owns BioWare now, it a good chance this stuff will never happen. But if this stuff doesn't happen and I end up having to pay a subscription fee just to play the game, then I will DEFINATELY NOT buy this game.
