BioWare on MMO storytelling in Star Wars: The Old Republic

Following yesterday's long-awaited reveal of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we took part in a round-table discussion with the game's lead writer at BioWare Austin, Daniel Erickson. Given that story is poised to play such a integral role in this latest MMO treatment of the iconic sci-fi universe, he and his team have been doing big things to make a big game; one that BioWare says contains more dialog and content than all of its past titles combined.
"When we started talking about it, what we heard was 'Well, you can't do a story in an MMO,'" said Erickson. "We thought, 'Well why?' The answer we pretty much got was, 'Because people haven't.' That didn't make a lot of sense."
"When we started talking about it, what we heard was 'Well, you can't do a story in an MMO,'" said Erickson. "We thought, 'Well why?' The answer we pretty much got was, 'Because people haven't.' That didn't make a lot of sense."
One of the things the writing team is most proud of, according to Erickson, is the depth of story – or, rather, stories.
"You will not see one repeated quest, line of dialogue, or piece of content." |
The game's class-specific storylines mean, according to Erickson, that if you've always wanted to play a Sith Lord, "you are playing – for all intents and purposes – the Sith RPG."
"All of your characters in your class story, all of your quests, the context ... you start the game on Korriban training to be a Sith and that is your world, and that is your context," Erickson said, adding, "and you're going to take that context into the world and then interact with the rest of the galaxy."
Gallery: Star Wars: The Old Republic
On the subject of expanded universe characters making cameos, Erickson revealed that, "These people come in and touch our game [The Old Republic] a lot, in the same way that characters from KOTOR and KOTOR II touch our game a lot."
Player choice has factored heavily in past BioWare RPGs, and will to an even greater extent in The Old Republic. "Imagine you're 60 hours in, you're playing light side, and you come up to this huge choice," Erickson posed. "You know exactly what you want to do, and you look for the save button ... and you realize there is no save button."
"The giant war that's coming between the Sith and the Republic – that's everybody's story." |
Addressing a question on how all of these various class-specific stories will be able to co-mingle, Erickson said that, "The example given during the unveiling of 'running around on the Millennium Falcon' was actually a really good one."
"Han's got a story that's going on, Luke's got a story that's going on, Leia's got a story that's going on (mainly her planet blew up, so I guess most of her quest content is gone at this point). Then you're all getting together and participating in a big story. That's why we talk about the context of it. The giant war that's coming between the Sith and the Republic – that's everybody's story," he said.
"The level of writing and quest building that was acceptable in KOTOR would absolutely not be acceptable now." |
The one thing Erickson seemingly wanted to stress more than anything else, though, is the fact that BioWare wants everything players do in The Old Republic to be Star Wars big. Erickson summed it up by telling the assembled media, "You will never in the game go into a cantina and poke a random person to see if you can solve their problems and they'll give you money. You will never have some stranger on the street ask you to save their cat. You do large, heroic things."
"I always tell people that we have to keep pushing forward. The level of writing and quest building that was acceptable in KOTOR would absolutely not be acceptable now. Mass Effect came out and absolutely set a new bar for this. We're coming out and saying we can push that even further," he said. "I always tell my writers to imagine if the very first response you could ever choose to any quest they might pitch is, 'Excuse me, I'm saving the world. Is this important?'"

It's either going to have hardly any content or they're going to backtrack heavily on these words.
antsmarching @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:53PM
With most other developers, I'd agree. But Bioware has such a phenomenal track record, I'm going to take their word for it in this case.
Malevo @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:27AM
They already said this game will have more content then all the other RPGS they have already made combined. There is a 10 minute dev interview video out atm that covers what I said if your interested to find it.
Ihavepants @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:58AM
And then at the very end of the interview they sneak in something along the lines of "and we're a part of EA now, so we're dedicated to bringing the product to you as soon as possible". Now this could be taken at surface value and he could be just saying that they're working hard and not wasting time... however it seems like that was his way of sneaking in his dissatisfaction with EA rushing them.
MagusDF @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:27AM
1 person does something big (in single player) its big
a guild does something big and locks the world in a certain path its still big
every dud playing the jedi class does the exact same thing thats big it either has no impact or is not all that big
congratulations youve blown up endor and so has every other person that played the sith at... lvl 5
Limezor @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:40PM
This is going to suck ass or rock hard.

I usually don't do this whole bullshit heart up/heart down thing but that was hilarious.
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:44PM
what was funny?
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:43PM
Sorry I wasn't around when this game was announced I was going to post:
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced".
Just Mr ESC. @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:47PM
The problem with MMOs is that generally they fail to tell a story you actually give a damn. Guild wars for example I believe there was a story but I guess I miss it because all I saw was a big button that said click here for EXP and GOLD.
In WOW I still don't get the story, I'm an Undead Warlock and it seems I came back to life for my Extraordinary Hate and despise against Spiders and now I’m my Campaign to annihilate all of them.
Rentaro @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:49PM
City of Heroes/Villain had excellent writing, though the level designs themselves leave much to be desired
MowDownJoe @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:42PM
Indeed. It's amazing what intricate plots could be woven in the same damn office buildings and warehouses over and over.
Jawmuncher @ Oct 22nd 2008 9:55PM
I still say it should have been singleplayer
theturtle363 @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:09PM
I'd like it much better that way as well, but there's plenty of reason for Bioware to still do a singleplayer, and with that next gen game listing on their site and EAs financial backing there might still be on yet.
Xoviet chiK - Gyiyg Strikes Back @ Oct 23rd 2008 7:01AM
Single Player in focus... With support for Baldur's Gate / Neverwinter Nights style multiplayer. That would be cool.
theturtle363 @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:08PM
ADD A MANDALORIAN CLASS!!!
Monkeys Suck @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:13PM
Screw that. Ewok class is where it's at.
Titanium_Orchid @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:20PM

H Choi @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:08PM
They talk about having tons of story content, but there's one key story telling component an MMO will never achieve and that is closure or climax to the overall story. I'd like it for any story that I read, watch or play to have an ending. Just give us KOTOR 3 Bioware!
Will @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:30PM
I couldn't agree more. I knew that KOTOR III would never come the second EA gobbled up BioWare.
swmarc @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:10PM
Sounds very promising but I am skeptical.
I hope they don't pull a starcraft and release the Jedi version and then a year later the sith version :)
Foetoid @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:39PM
Don't give them any ideas.
uranutan3 @ Oct 23rd 2008 6:53AM
Sound more like a City of Heroes/Villains to me.
Richie @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:24PM
Here's the thing - when you're basing an MMO on a hugely-known story like Star Wars, and you're giving people the option to choose to be Jedi/Sith or a non-Jedi/Sith, how is the game possibly going to be balanced? NOBODY will pick a non-Jedi. What's the point? Ooh, I can use droids, or repair stuff. Who gives a crap, the Jedi can use the goddamn force.
sicsided @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:49PM
I would pick a mandalorian class. Hell I could see a whole expansion to the mandalorian feud itself.
Charlie_Six @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:52PM
I'll pick a non-Jedi first, no doubt. I've never been a huge fan of the Force or Jedi. I'm much more into the vehicles, technology, and politics of the Star Wars fiction.
Heck, I think it'd be hilarious to be a utility droid like R2-D2 (utility droids were character classes in the two KOTOR games). I pray they keep the class in the game, although I can't imagine a heroic storyline being made for a utility droid....
Courtney @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:40AM
I would go for a non-jedi class for my first character. In the few MMOs I've played, I've always gone for one of the lesser used class options as I find it more entertaining and challenging. I had the most fun in SWG attaining master Ranger, a completely pointless class in many ways, but it was fun getting there.
H Choi @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:23AM
They could intentionally make the jedi class more tedious and boring in order to encourage people to be the non-jedis.

Charlie_Six @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:32PM
Sounds pretty great so far. I hope there is space and vehicle combat in the game of moderate depth. For people who don't like that kind of thing, they could just not do those quests.
Dear Bioware, get Larry Holland on your team for the space combat. For the land vehicle combat.. uhh, I dunno. No land vehicle combat Star Wars game has been good yet.
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:38PM
I'm not even going to read anything until this game gets confirmed on the 360 or PS3. Mainly because I don't have a gaming PC. I have two mac's and a eeePC. My only computer good enough to play an online game like this is at work and thats not going to happen.
Let's hope they at least release it on the 360 as well as the PC.
thethirdmoose @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:58PM
I really hope this is PC-only. An MMO by nature is very PC-centric (lots of typing, very complex mechanics), and it just wouldn't work well on a console.
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:18PM
It really hasn't been done well yet. If done correctly it could work just fine. Besides, the PS3 supports keyboard and mouse and there is no reason that MS can't release a KB & M addition.
fraxyl @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:20PM
Well, previous MMOs have been very PC-centric with lots of typing... not sure about "complex" mechanics. I think this sort of MMO would work fine on a console, especially if they ditched typing for voice.
It's not a freakin' text based adventure game.
Halwende @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:07PM
Er, I'm pretty sure Lord of the Rings Online has a pretty good story - at least in the sense of it's "book" quests that have you follow the plots of the books themselves. Yes? No? *shrug*
But anyway, I'll be watching this closely, but only cos it's you Bioware!
Seth Vs Ayumi @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:18PM
Star Wars needs to die. People still like this shit?
Farseer (GDI) @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:17AM
If people could kill through teh internets, you'd already be dead.
Paul @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:25PM
If they don't have a Wookie class I'm going to be pissed!
Kevin949 @ Oct 22nd 2008 11:53PM
no story in any MMO? Hell, dark age of camelot had someone class specific "epic quests" that lasted from level 1 til level 50. Even continued on after that with expansions.
jbhungry @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:12AM
I love Bioware, but how can any storyline where you are "saving the world" feel important when 1 million people are doing the EXACT same thing as you.
I want an MMO where I save the world and everyone else just has to watch.
Phinehas @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:23PM
You don't have to save the world personally so much as be a part of saving the world.
Imagine if the Sith are building some super-weapon like the Deathstar, and the Jedi are tasked with stopping its deployment. There can be hundreds of small quests about getting the components, resources, etc. to build the super-weapon and hundreds more about interfering with that process. Each person involved feels like they are making a contribution to something bigger than just accumulating XP.
Seth Vs Ayumi @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:24AM
Whatever! Vote me the fuck down all you want! You know that shit is true! Star Wars is shit!
George Lucas ruined his own creation. He ran Star Wars into the ground. But you keep on buying his shit! I can't wait for that shitty ass Star Wars tv series he's working on. That's going to be another shitty Star Wars property.
Hawc @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:31AM
Bioware, however, made a remarkably good Star Wars game. Add to that the ridiculous amounts of "lore" Star Wars has, and you have a recipe for making a very interesting MMO.
Amoveo @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:58AM
Long story short they claim that this MMO will have the level of quality we've come to expect from Bioware in massive quantities with multiplayer interaction. Where do I sign up?
Jake11 @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:07AM
who else is rolling bounty hunter?
t_m @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:30AM
Difficult things to do with stories in MMOs:
1 - Have a galaxy changing ending. (for everyone)
2 - Be able to meet up with your friends for a quick game (when you are on different paths on different sides of the galaxy with different aims)
3 - Make people care about the story, rather than it just being something to click through to get to the loot/XP.
If they can pull it off then great... except why not do it in a SP game?
Anticrawl @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:31AM
I'm going to be honest and say I didn't read the entire article, just the parts I skimmed through and found interesting. Joystiq could do a bit better with less filler. Is there any word on classes yet? I don't want to be a pussy with a glowing sword my first play through. Will there be a great deal of depth in skills not associated with fighting as in KOTOR? I always wanted to play an MMO where my more pacifist skills allowed me to dominate team based battles. Cloaking, stealth, peculation, force disrupter tech, etc would be sweet. A hardened warrior class like Mandalorian would be nice too. Will Jedi like for example General Kota be able to command a group of players in a PvP team match and have stats like leadership that will increase effectiveness of the teams attacks, etc?
I also imagine the broader story will have factions that will fight one another but will there be private sector factions that can be hired to fight for either side such as mercenaries or bounty hunters? There are so many ways they can make this MMO but their focus on “epic heroic quests” for each character makes it sound like a single player game where you can also talk to other people in a lobby and there is no persistent world that you have a hand in shaping.
I realize this entire post is a bunch of disorganized ramblings so please excuse me, I’m a bit tweaked on opiates trying to ease neck pain haha. Fucking drunk drivers get off to easily these days.
