I played Final Fantasy XI for a while and it had a definite story via it's mission system.

Easier said than done. I'll believe all this when I get into the beta and see it for myself.

*sigh*
If they can pull this off as effectively as they say they can, I will have been put in my place.
But really, focusing on story in an MMO is like focusing crafting in an FPS. It's a detractor to the game. The ideal MMO (in my mind) gives you freedom to craft your own story through the gameplay adventures. Instancing and plot-lines spoils the MMO-ness of it all.

I agree with Darkbhudda. "Final Fantasy XI" has great storytelling with definite beginnings, middles and endings. I started laughing with the quote at the beginning about nobody has ever done storytelling in an MMO because Square Enix has been doing it for years, and they've been doing it very well.

"You will never have some stranger on the street ask you to save their cat. You do large, heroic things."

Ill believe that when I see it. I hated WOW and WAR because at the end of the day I had more "todo" list crap then what my wife gave me. I felt like the empire's bitch. "Here go kill 25 wolves for me." - "sure the end of the world can wait."

If they pull it off well, then this could certainly be an MMO to finally get me to stay interested in.

Really looking forward to seeing what Bioware does.

The MMORPG metanarrative would be a great platform to produce new types of "New Media" interactive stories. I examine this at: http://primetimeforchange.com/2008/10/electric-farm-entertainment-and-mmos.html.

Some really cool possibilities to add "Story" to the MMO.

World pvp to the extent that one faction could be, for all intensive purposes, annhilated would be neat. Maybe throw in a hidden rebel base where the feeble could regain their strength before they strike out against the dominant force.

Also, I hope this is a sandbox kind of game in the following respect -- you should be able to learn the skills you want to learn and then improve them by using them (like the Elder Scrolls series, or Dragonrealms before all that graphics stuff). The idea of game balance between classes would become a moot point, with the exception of force abilities. Or maybe non-jedi could become jedi if they practiced enough and triggered some kind of recruitment effect. Then again, you can just do what ES does and make it so that if your class is not specialized in a particular area, it takes forever to learn the skill. The bottom line being balance screws everybody over; it ruined simutronics and I think it may be at least a contributing effect to the increasingly boring WoW.

That's enough from me. As long as Bioware varies their normal formula of intro level, go to four planets, fight final boss, I'll be happy.
