Turns out there are greater hurdles to face than having to stare down a charging Yao Ming -- like manifesting a CD key out of thin air. That's just the challenge faced by those who purchased NBA 2K9 for PC. According to a thread at the 2K forums, many who purchased the title and were prompted for an authentication code were out of luck, as none appeared anywhere in or on the packaging.
In a statement to Shacknews, Valve said that Steam will fix the issue and allow installation without the need for the key, provided the CD is in the drive.

They reeeeeeeeeaaaally messed up here. Add this to the Xbox 360 games' problems and you have a horribly botched launch.

And this is why sports games are doomed to fail.

Don't you mean 2K?
Anyway, 2K, TT, whatever, really messed up 2K9's launch.

Yeah, I'm uh.. I'm an idiot. I forgot that 2k made it. A mistake not made EA is like dividing by zero, my brain just looked past it and blamed them anyways.

Valve have absolutely no relation to this game, is it even available on Steam?
If so then I don't see why they're doing it (kindness of heart as they've shown with TF2 updates excepted) - also if they don't have proper permission then what they're technically doing is cracking the game..

NBA2K9 is pretty damn sweet! Best B-ball game Ive ever played period. A bunch of friends and I were playing itover the weekend at my friends house for about 4 hours straight. Its really smooth too. Great signature animations, sound/commentary, graphics, just an all around great game. I'll probably pick it up when the price goes down. I know the 2K games usually drop kinda fast so this is a must buy for basketball game fans. Way better than NBALIVE 09
