We're sure it'll be endlessly debated, but the Gears of War 2 ad "Last Day" may have just topped the moving and oft-parodied "Mad World" ad for the first game. The 60-second commercial features the track "How it Ends" by DeVotchKa (available from your preferred online music store).
Before screaming that the ad "totally rips off" the original Gears ad, it's probably good to know that it was created by the same team that designed the first. Check out "Last Day" after the break. Now, if only the game can pull off the ad's emotional tug ...
IMO, the Mad World ad was the best ad for a video game *ever*. Not only that, but I'd argue that it is one of the most successful ads period over the last 5 years or so. It did a lot more than sell a game...it sold the emotional experience that you were supposed to encounter in the game. It was entertaining. How many commercials for a video game push the song to the top of *any* list, let alone iTunes? You might think it to be possible if it was a fairly well known song, but what if it was a cover of a Tears for Fears song from the soundtrack of a cult-like movie that didn't see any real theatrical success? The pairing was genius. How many commercials for a video game make people that have no intent of playing the game pay attention and show interest? The new one is just a predictable follow-up, and really doesn't have the same impact. Heck, I don't think it has *any* impact.
I like this one better because it feels more epic. I think it captures the teamwork and sacrifice aspect of the conflict. Plus the song fits the motion better than mad world did.
that was awesome. thats two 360 ads ive seen this week that have gotten me pretty excited (Alan Wake was the other). i think this one hits you more emotionally than the first one does but the firs ones song was more catchy, although this one was catchy as well. either way, it made me want this game.
i just bought a 360 and rented Gears while i waited for the games i ordered to show up. it was a good game and even as a person who doesnt consider himself a big FPS player, i still think i like Resistance better. so im getting R2 next week but you better believe that im pickin this up after im done with that,

How is this disturbing? I saw several people saying that on the first page but I'm simply not getting anything similar to disturbing when I watch this.
In my opinion, both songs worked perfectly great. Though I must admit that this new song for Gears of War 2 made me a little teary eyed for a minute. Well, it's because the whole thing were so dramatic, especially when Dom was holding a photo of him and his missing wife, Maria. Damn! November 7 is just around the corner, huh, guys? I love this game!!
why does Big Download nor Fileplanet not offer the download of this in HD? Only yahoo seems to have it.. anyone know another place to get it yahoo does not seem to be working.
This is great. I watched this on tv (30 second version) and thought, wow, they did it again. It made me want to get it and play it. I really love how the gears creators go for this feel in marketing. I found myself thinking, "That should've been longer." only to come online and see the perfect 60 second version. bra-vo.
Does anyone else love the soundtrack for Gears of War 2? I feel “How It Ends” was the perfect song they could’ve picked for the trailer. Try annihilating some locust while listening to the whole album!
