Miyamoto: Guitar Hero, Beatmania are 'cover band' titles
12
Shigeru Miyamoto recently hosted a Wii Music roundtable with a select number of websites and magazines (clearly, our invitation was lost in the mail), in which the great man appeared to insult other music games! Shock! Horror! Headlines!
Of course, we understand Miyamoto probably wasn't trying to be mean when he compared playing franchises such as Beatmania and Guitar Hero to being part of a cover band. If anything, we suspect Shiggy was merely explaining how Wii Music is more freeform -- which it is, of course. "My goal wouldn't be to try and lull people to join the best cover band," explained Wii Music's dad, "but rather, to let them move beyond that rather basic level of music training."
He also found time to defend Wii Music's track list, which has come under attack from some critics, including IGN's Matt Cassamassina, who we like to think shifted awkwardly in his seat when Miyamoto brought the subject up. Apparently, a lot of modern songs don't have a suitable chord progression for Wii Music, while the harmonies and melodies of many contemporary tracks came across as too samey. So there you go: Nintendo didn't just choose a ton of public domain songs to save cash.

Someone should've ask if there was going to be downloadable songs, or why the hell there isn't.
Also.

He's right, of course. It doesn't make those games any less fun, but he is right.

Well he is because you're just recreating the music you see, like you would in a cover band. I like the games(GH, RB, etc.) and had fun when I tried Wii Music(Don't know if I'll get it). But he hit the nail on the head with this.....

"I mean, from what I have seen, all you are doing to playing songs that other people did before."
Well, you should see some more then. My understanding was that the point of the game is to create your own arrangements of the songs, not simply to play them.
Or, you could be like IGN and completely mutilate a song by shaking the remote at random. Apparently reviewers think that all Wii games are supposed to be played by shaking the controller at random. Certainly would explain a lot of scores. . .

I agree he's right. But I fail to see where the problem lies.

Wii Music is just as much as a cover band title as any of those other games. It may give you more flexibility with how the song is played, but you're still covering songs.
The only one that has branched away from covers is GH:WT with it's song creator.

Most of what Miyamoto says here becomes quickly obvious to anyone who has spent some time with Wii Music.

People complaining about the tracklist? But, but but...September by Earth, Wind & Fire is on there. That inarguably makes up for all other apparent inadequacies.

I agree. Wii Music is way more than a cover game because you can make a song sound totally different. Also anyone else think that the computer characters in Wii Music are totally better than the Miis. I love how they're almost muppet like.

I wonder if Miyamoto was referring to the majority of song performances on GH and RB? I had some fun (and still do with GH Legends of Rock).... But the amount of songs that are sung and performed by "cover bands" is a little disappointing.
In Wii Music I've enjoyed actually creating the melodies and variation of the tunes myself. The difference is being the artist not trying to keep up with someone else as the artist. GH comes off as more of a puzzle game to me (like Tetris or Dr. Mario...) Wii Music is definitely about creating music yourself. I've loved it so far! Miyamoto is a genius!
