There's been a number of pleasant surprises that have come out of Treyarch's upcoming installment in the wildly lucrative Call of Duty franchise -- such as the inclusion of Jack Bauer, and its uncanny resemblance to the previous, well-received chapter in the series. However, last night's episode of GameTrailers TV brought another shocking (yet welcome) revelation, straight from the mouth of Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia -- Call of Duty: World at War will contain a four-player, co-op zombie (of the Nazi variety) survival mode.
Those who currently aren't busy scraping pieces of their blown mind off of the wall behind them will probably be interested in a few details Lamia mentioned -- the gameplay mode (which is unlocked upon the completion of the single player campaign) will place four players in a central structure, then assail them with wave upon wave of undead national socialists. Throughout the game, players will collect money which can be used to fortify their compound, or purchase new weapons. Also, there will be Nazi zombies.
Stoked parties can catch a glimpse of the SS Zombocalypse in Chapter Four of last night's GTTV episode, now available online.

plus every single popular fps game has found someway to play a zombie variant. just because they do doesn't mean its copying a zombie game

... And that's the moment Call of Duty jumped the shark, ladies and gentlemen. After this installment, no one would take the franchise seriously and Treyarch would end up doing soft porn games. They were finally put out of their misery by an EA acquisition, contributing the in-game menus and credits animation for "Call of Duty:Medal of Honor: Dead Space: Hitler Rising" prior to their disbandment. Former developers can now be found contributing on casual games projects for the Zune and advergames for tobacco companies in China and Africa.
It was an extremely profitable, if largely undistinguished and controversial run for a major development studio in the aughts. Looking back, perhaps it's best to remember them as a star-crossed contribution to one of the most memorable shooter franchises in gaming media's adolescence.
After this break, we consider the strange odyssey of pre-Guitar Hero music games.

And your a dumbass. This is an EXTRA, OPTIONAL, feature. You don't even need to to touch the Zombie things. It's meant for fun. I like how Treyarch went the extra mile for awesome Nazi Zombie Survival. I have never seen any other zombie FPS with barricading actually a feature, so this looks awesome

Completely agree, this should not have a place in COD. I'm tired of seeing zombies in every game. It's so cheap.

Zombies? Strange addition to Call of Duty. It's like they noticed how fun all the other zombie games were and couldn't resist adding their own 'zombie' mode. Zombies aren't part of WWII history, and thus shatters any shred of suspension of disbelief in the historical period you may have had during playing a video game.
I'm only saying this because Call of Duty has always had a historical backdrop as it's basis, and this is such a fantasy element.
I'm not mad, of course I'm sure it's fun to shoot zombies like in every other game (Resident Evil, Halo, Dead Rising, Condemned, Uncharted, GTA4 now?), but it's just such a bandwagon move. Zombies? C'mon man, I'm sure a lot of internet-raised dudes who think zombies are the panacea for anything will type "FULL OF EPIC WINNNN!!11!!!" but it's a move that won't age well in the history of CoD games.

if you encountered nazi zombies in the main campaign or multiplayer you might have a point, but this is just a fun little extra that is obviously not intended to be part of WWII or the games history. As it is you guys are just bitching about a nifty little extra content. You might as well flame any game that ever included a big head cheat or something like that because big heads aren't a part of the games normal reality

Alright, I'll try and explain this simply to those who are worried about this breaking the suspension of disbelief.
This is an optional game mode which has nothing to do with the single player or the main multiplayer (and if you need extreme historical accuracy to enjoy a multiplayer game then frankly I think you should join a battle re-enactment group instead).
It is simply a distraction, a fun extra the developers have put into the game. When I was playing GTA4, taking friends out bowling broke the suspension of belief that I was playing a decent game. But since it was optional I didn't mind.

I disagree. I think treyarch has done a really nice and original addition. Its not considered part of the main story just an extra so it should not be used as evidence to where the franchise is going. besides, who knows what experiments those Nazis were up to back then?

Ah, I remember those days when I played RE2 on my Nintendo 64. Rushing, if not speedrunning, on almost every game just to get the Gatling Gun and abuse its infinite bullet sweetness. It was wonderful. I also remember my boomstick, which I liked to keep even if I had a gun with infinite bullets. Those days are long gone now, despite the Plagas being fun to beat, but not as fun as zombies unfortunately...
But most notably, how in those runs I loved to find the typewriter room. I loved the music those rooms had.
R.I.P. Typewriter.

no wonder Infinity Ward does not consider Treyarch and their COD games to be part of the COD series. TO take a franchise that is a staple in the area of reality and put undead into it, clearly do not understand their audience. I know nazi Germany did a lot of experiments but one thing they did not have was undead.
They just lost my money for this year. Although in playing the beta I have learned it is a rehash of COD 3 which was a disappointment as well. It's sad that Activision feels the need to have Treyarch develop a game they clearly do not have the understanding or talent to accomplish.
I can't wait for COD 6 when Infinity Ward's next real COD game comes out.
Sorry Treyarch, stick with what you are good at.

You're an idiot. This is an OPTIONAL game mode that you get once completing the game. Try reading the entire fucking article, genius.

I did read the article and my opinion stands. You obviously have not been following the series since call of duty 1 and their work on medal of honor prior. I am not sure why you have to call someone and idiot because I hold a different opinion than you. However, COD has gained its popularity due to its realism.

One thing I wonder if players will just face regular enemies in nazi-zombie skin or if they tweaked the AI to give the enemies zombie-like behaviours.
Now what kinda zombies, boring shuffling "Romero" zombies, or hyper turbo "28 days later" infected?
The reviews for this game should be interesting.

This sounds friggin' awesome! And so unexpected too!
Hell, I already pre-order World at War, so for me this is extra icing on the cake!
I gotta feeling I'll be taking advantadge of this mode for many, many hours!
Good job, Treyarch, you get props from The Alex (ok, so that doesn't mean much, but whatever.)
